W2W4: Celtics vs. Heat

By Chris Forsberg | Oct 30, 2012 6:00 AM
The Boston Celtics tip off their 2012-13 season on Tuesday night by visiting the Miami Heat at AmericanAirlines Arena (TNT, 8 p.m.) Here's what to watch for in a rematch of last year's Eastern Conference finals:

* A NICE RING TO IT?: The Heat will receive their rings and raise a championship banner in a pregame ceremony. Celtics coach Doc Rivers has said he's uncertain what he'll do with his team during the festivities, but don't expect him to force his team to watch. "If I have to use that [as motivation], then there’s something wrong with our guys," Rivers said. "I don’t think I need to use it as anything to fire our guys up." Rajon Rondo said he'll likely head for the locker room, and the Celtics as a whole might join him. It's like being invited to the wedding between your ex-girlfriend and the guy who used to pick on your in high school. Thanks, but no thanks.

* OLD FRIEND, NEW UNIFORM: Speaking of old flames, the Celtics get to see old friend Ray Allen in his new Heat garb right out of the gates. It seems impossible that Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce won't share a moment with Allen at some point -- despite their frustrations with his decision to leave. The more intriguing aspect might be how things play out between Allen and Rondo. There's genuine animosity there that could bubble over, though it's more likely to play itself out in a competitive manner on the floor. It will be interesting to see if the Celtics make a concerted effort to attack Allen's defensive deficiencies.

* STARTERS, FINISHERS: Much has been made about Boston's lineups throughout the preseason. The Celtics ran Courtney Lee and Brandon Bass with the first unit for much of the week, but don't be surprised to see a lineup with Jason Terry and Jeff Green sharing the floor with Rondo, Garnett and Pierce at key junctures (including, potentially, the final moments of the game). Rivers tends to keep his rotations tight in showcase games and, with two days off after the opener, there's a solid chance he'll run his veterans hard and limit the mixing and matching the first time out.

* MATCHUPS, MATCHUPS, MATCHUPS: Rivers and his players scoffed at the notion that Boston spent its offseason building a roster to match the Heat's personnel. The Celtics are quick to point out that they went small at the All-Star break last season (shifting Garnett to center) and that Miami didn't get comfortable with a small lineup (Bosh at center) until Boston forced it to match up in the Eastern Conference finals. Are the Celtics confident enough in their bigger lineups to try to force matchup issues against the size-deprived Heat? How will Boston guard LeBron James and, at the other end of the floor, how do the Heat approach Rondo this time around? It should be a fun chess match.

* HEART OF THE MATTER: Somewhat overshadowed by the rivalry aspect and all the drama that comes with this game is the fact that Green will be playing in his first honest-to-goodness game in 17 months. He sat out all of last season due to an aortic aneurysm and was merely a non-attached spectator when Boston lost to Miami in the playoffs. Green had a stellar preseason and Tuesday's game is his first chance to show his potential (something he never thought he reached after being acquired by Boston at the trade deadline in 2011).

* BASKETBALL IS BACK: The Celtics had a wild offseason, one that started with just four players under contract. Boston didn't just reassemble its core -- well, except for Allen -- it also brought in newfound depth at every position, and there's a lot of optimism around this team about the 2012-13 campaign. As Rivers has been quick to point out, it's an 82-game season. A win Tuesday won't take away the sting of last year's Game 7 loss in East finals, while a loss won't detour Boston's lofty goals for this new year. The regular season is a marathon, but you've got to enjoy the noteworthy checkpoints along the way. Celtics vs. Heat should be a fun way to get things started.

NBA season kicks off with Heat vs. Celtics in a marquee*matchup

Ray Allen will make his regular season Miami Heat debut

Miami Heat vs. Boston Celtics games are must watch television in 2012. Oct. 30 at 8 p.m is one such opportunity. The game will be televised nationally on TNT.

In the 2010 playoffs, the Celtics downed Dwyane Wade's Miami Heat in five games during a first round playoff matchup.

In the same postseason, the Celtics took out LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in the very next round in six games.

Ever since then, James has joined Wade in Miami and the Heat have eliminated the Celtics in the last two postseasons on their way to taking the mantle and being back-to-back Eastern Conference Champions, and last season, NBA champions.

This goes back a few years, you see.

Back to Dwyane Wade proclaiming in 2010 that it would be his last time losing in the first round for a while, after being stung by the Celtics series, a proclamation that has been true to this point. Back to a controversial Rajon Rondo elbow injury in the 2011 Eastern Conference Semi-Finals that some thought was a dirty play by Wade. When that series was over, LeBron James kneeled on the floor for what seemed like an eternity in relief of finally getting past the Celtics in the postseason.

And back to last season's Eastern Conference Finals, where James' historical 45 point game six performance helped the Heat out of a 3-2 hole in the series and propelled them to a championship.

It's what makes the season opener on Oct. 30 at the American Airlines Arena so compelling, and a big reason why the 2012-13 season is perceived to be as anticipated as any season in recent memory. It's fitting that James will receive his first championship ring in a ceremony before playing the Celtics, a team that stood in his way in every meaningful playoff run he has been a part of, with the exception of 2007 and 2009.

Adding fuel to the dynamic of this rivalry is Ray Allen deciding to join the Heat this summer, and Jason Terry, who played a large role in helping the Dallas Mavericks out the Heat in the 2011 finals, deciding to join the Celtics.

But this is still just one regular season basketball game. One that holds very little weight in the context of the season, and will not be a crystal clear depiction of this matchup as it would be when they play later in the season.

Things are developing for both teams. The Heat are bringing along Allen in their rotation and building on an approach from last postseason that features a shorter front court, in terms of height, in it's starting lineup. The Celtics added depth in the offseason and are working in Jeff Green, Courtney Lee, Jared Sullinger and Terry as big parts of their rotation as they attempt to take the conference back.

But given the history between these two teams, and the adrenaline of a season opener, this is as good as the NBA gets in 2012.

NOTES

* The matchup shouldn't be too complicated strategically on defense. Both teams will defend very well in their man-to-man rotations, however, it will be interesting to see how Celtics coach Doc Rivers utilizes Terry off the bench, and whether he employs similar stagger screens to get him loose for jumpers as the Celtics used with Allen. Also, keep an eye on the Celtics frontcourt rotation, and how much playing time Sullinger gets as opposed to Brandon Bass. Sullinger is a more versatile offensive player, and the Heat will have to take that into account.

* It looks like the Heat are opening the season with Udonis Haslem as their backup center, given the Joel Anthony injury. Haslem is a good defender, but would probably struggle with Garnett's length if they match up, so Heat head coach Spoelstra may want to avoid that.

* This is the Heat's 25th season in the league, by the way. Rejoice.

* The Heat will begin its pregame banner and ring ceremony at 7:30 p.m, but are requesting that fans be there at 7 p.m. Show up people.

* Anthony is reportedly still not 100 percent and unlikely to play. He has guarded Garnett a lot in the past, so the Heat will likely rely on Chris Bosh to take on the future Hall of Famer and avoid the Haslem-Garnett matchup.

* The Heat is expected to start Bosh, Shane Battier, James, Wade, and Mario Chalmers, the same lineup it has had since game 2 of the 2012 NBA finals.

LeBron James Going With Gold Shoes For*Opener

MIAMI (AP) — To celebrate winning a gold trophy, reigning NBA MVP LeBron James is wearing gold shoes.

James and Nike made a special pair of the LeBron X shoes for Tuesday night’s Miami Heat championship ring ceremony and opener against the Boston Celtics. The shoes are gold — in honor of the ring — and trimmed in white and red, a nod to the color scheme of the uniforms the Heat wore when they clinched last season’s NBA title.

The shoes also have various graphic elements, including the number of points he scored in the playoffs, Miami’s record in the postseason and the inscriptions “MVP” and “Champ.”

James says the shoes “are special” to him, and that it didn’t take him long to figure out how he wanted the design to look.
