NBA approves Ballmer's bid to buy Clippers

@bills, NFL doesn't need gimmicks to raise their profile. Their the lead dog regardless. However, that sale, even as an outlier, will serve as a comp of sorts for next years Forbes list of pro sports team valuation. Everybody gets a bump. But I am very interested to see what happens with the Bills now.

Teams are worth what someone is willing to pay.

The Bills are tied to that stadium for a number of years and I think a stadium buyout isn't even possible for years down the road. Even with those caveats, there are a finite # of NFL teams so someone is gonna buy it.

Daaaaaaaaaaamn!

Ballmer is from Seattle. Chris Hansen was aggressively pursuing a team to bring back to Seattle. To the point that he was even trying to fuck up the King's sale with donations to local politicos.

There is no way in hell Steve Ballmer wants the Clippers THAT badly, unless he feels it was the best chance to bring a team back to Seattle, and repair his image.

Word on the street is, he's not well liked in Seattle right now.

Nah man. L.A.>>>>>

fuck their feelings, he can move to L.A.

Maybe, and it wouldn't surprise me if that were the case...

...but SOMETHING has to explain that bid. I refuse to believe it was simply a case of wanting to own the Clippers.

Maybe.

But, I'm just going to remain skeptical.

Without reading closely what everyone said I get the feeling that a few of you also see the kinda sleight of hand shit happening...I cain't call it for sure, but....

The potential come up for some of these franchises, as a result of The Clips being worth 2bil is verrrry interesting.

team+l.a.+you failed 2 times already= I'm gonna get this shit even if I gotta pay $2 billion for it because my friends are laughing at me at the country club calling me 'can't get right' cause i keep failing to own an nba team.

Keep an eye on the Buffalo Bills. They gonna break somebody calculator. :smh:

They won't be breaking anybody's calculator unless another buyer worth 10's of billions, who's been turned down several times before, and just desperately wants to own a team. This whole deal makes me think of how all the oil billionaires have just thrown money at European soccer teams just for the sake of owning one. But if I had a few billion lying around I might do the same thing.

I honestly always thought his intentions were to move the team to Seattle and all that "i want to keep the team in LA" talk was just to not affect his bid being accepted.

Man. He's worth 20Billion. I don't think he's going to lose any sleep over losing the extra "large market" revenue by moving the team out of LA. On the other end, he would pretty much solidify himself as a Seattle legend by bring basketball back to the city.

He's tried to own an NBA team twice?

I didn't know that.

Well, that could be it, then.

Still...

...Ballmer doesn't seem to be an 'LA' type guy. Don't know if the glamor really appeals to him like that.

I know Larry Ellison have tried multiple times but he kept lowballing. Has Ballmer actually tried to purchase a team before?

Maybe since he just retired from Microsoft, he wants some new shit to do. Regular folks get hobbies, Billionaires by professional sports team :lol:

Clearly you haven't been paying attention. The worst team in the NFL and least valuable- a team that cant give away tickets and routinely has blockouts- recently sold for 800million. The Bills are a beloved franchise with a history of winning and insanely loyal fanbase in a devoted town. They will break the calculator.

He can't move the team through sheer will. The other owners would have to vote their approval. The commissioner would have to allow for a vote in the first place. There's no movement on either front. When this Sterling mess went down the Mayor of L.A. stepped up, the city as well. The League isn't going to upend a major market for the sake of a smaller one.

on the grapevine word is larry is the entire reason ballmer is trying to buy a team.

yea they do, he just parted with $2 billion

im going to get there and im going to buy something like marlboro or colt 45 and immediately cease production and do a recall.

it ain't about glamor though, he's not trying to be a socialite. he's trying to walk into the card game puffing a cigar with a clipper nylon track suit on.

Seattle did end up in OKC...

...and I KNOW what you're going to say, but there is a significance difference between the size of those media markets.

different though, it was an untapped market and they proved they loved the nba when the pelicans played there.

lost in this deal is another $800k that hookers and his dealier made off of this deal.

He's not going to do it right away anyway. Ballmer is smart enough to take his time with that type of move.

Surely, you don't think it's outside the realm of a former Microsoft CEO to backdoor his way in and expose his hand after he figures he won?

what we need to be asking is how much time is left on their lease...in that building they don't own.

he could DEMAND that l.a. fund a new separate arena for the clippers citing his purchase as the reason they deserve it. and then when l.a. says hell no

he can say i tried my best and then move them

lol

these billionaires need me around, if only there was a way around this whole being black black thing.

You want an explanation? Here ya go. Sterling is a litigious bastard who would probably start outing other owners... as well as former commissioner Stern and team executives. There is probably so much dirt- and by dirt I mean racist bullshit- that Sterling simply threatened the league, its owners, and executives... and they found a buyer and a number that would keep him quiet.

Nice clean and out, and over with.. protect the league against what could be horrific PR. In addition Donald Sterlings family had him declared mentally incompetent; really! So now, if anything else comes out on those 100 additional hours of recorded Donald Sterling tapes, he'll be seen as a kook.

That's why he is being given 1.25 Billion- with a B- more dollars than his team is worth.

I said it before and I'll say it again. I need them tapes.

There's major market and then there's MAJOR Market. Seattle ain't L.A.

Seattle did whiff on a stadium deal to keep the Sonics, that wasn't the Leagues fault. What we're discussing now would be the League abandoning the city for no other reason than because it feels like it.

Not in L.A. Not after all this turmoil.

Homie. The Clippers had operating profits of 15 million last year including ALL revenue.

yeah some of yall are failing to see that team buying for billionaires is not about making money. Its a hobby or like buying a car. you don't expect to get something out of it but you like doing it.

you think that Russian that owns the Nets gives two fucks about profit?

Wrong! You get teased at the country club for spending 1.25 billion more for something than you have to.

A billion dollars is an obscene amount of money and I'm offended that they (white people) have this kind of money to throw away. And don't get it twisted... Sterling probably made it very clear that he would not sell to a black investment group.

This is a fix.

1. Long term lease with Staples. - June, 2024 -
2. City is really buying into the team after this major upheaval.
3. It's L.A.
4. He doesn't even work in Seattle anymore.
5. It's L.A.
6. Do you remember his tenure at Microsoft? They are trying to right the ship and catch up with all the internet & phone operators.

When exactly is he making that move? What year?

yeah some of yall are failing to see that team buying for billionaires is not about making money.

Come on man. Dude make the argument about the profitability of the team. I clarified that they weren't as profitable at he thought. That's not arguing that Billionaires don't buy teams as expensive toys. Don't confuse my clarification for anything other than being factual with the numbers.

Sorry bro but YOU'RE wrong.

there are only 30 members of this club and everyone he interacts with, that has money is not going to be a member of it and there's nothing they can do about it.

from Feb to may he made 2 billy on stocks

"Because of the binding agreement to sell the team, the NBA termination hearing that had been scheduled for June 3 in New York City has now been cancelled. Mrs. Sterling and the Trust also agreed not to sue the NBA and to indemnify the NBA against lawsuits from others, including from Donald Sterling."

http://www.nba.com/2014/news/05/30/nba-sterlings-announce-settlement/index.html

A With the sale - they are out
B With the hearing - they are out

They went with A

What most of yall have missed in this sale is that Ballmer agreed to let Sterling's wife still work with the team in some capacity. Whether that includes any decision making remains to be seen though..

It's a bit more like this..

A With the sale - the tree gets cut down to a stump
B With the hearing - the tree gets excavated and roots dug up

1. I was wrong about this shit dragging out. I thought the old jew would put up a fight.

2. I was right about this being an inside game. Bad Jew Sterling says something bad about black people, Good Jew Silver comes in and saves the day, sells the team to another Jew. And black people get jack shit out the whole episode. Despite several qualified black ownership groups available, somehow niggas still end up with zero.

Paying an extra Billion plus is not like paying another half a million for a house or another 10 million for a building. Overpaying is acceptable by rich folks up to a point.

Sterling wanted a certain amount of money to be quiet and he was concerned about capital gains tax. The extra money is hush money.

This is what I said yesterday.

I feel like we've been had.

You think Silver or any of those owners - JORDAN INCLUDED - care about what dude said?

Hell no they didn't.

We get the moral victory AGAIN, and the CAC walks away with the money. :smh:
