President Trump said Tuesday the U.S. has struck a trade deal with Indonesia, levying a smaller tariff on the country than initially proposed.

Why it matters: It's the first deal struck with a country that received one of Trump's tariff letters last week.

  • But it's also at a much higher rate than many economists and market strategists ultimately expect tariffs to settle.
What they're saying: "Great deal, for everybody, just made with Indonesia. I dealt directly with with their highly respected President. DETAILS TO FOLLOW! ! !" Trump wrote on Truth Social.

  • Bloomberg subsequently quoted Trump as saying Indonesia would pay a 19% tariff. That's down from the 32% he proposed in April, and again in a letter last week.
Between the lines: The U.S. imported about $28 billion in goods from Indonesia last year.

  • The country is a significant source of U.S. textile imports, in particular.
The intrigue: When Trump first unveiled his global tariffs in April, the baseline rate was 10%.

  • Economists and market strategists have since forecasted that when all is said and done, the blended average rate of all tariffs will end up around 14% or 15%.

  • But the Indonesia and recent Vietnam deals are higher than that, and Trump himself has recently spoken of a higher baseline rate as well.
  • A higher global rate would potentially generate more revenue for the government, but would also have much stiffer financial impacts on consumers and businesses.

Indonesia has officially become a full member of BRICS, marking a significant development for both the organization and Southeast Asia. This makes Indonesia the first Southeast Asian nation to join the group, which also includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Indonesia's membership is seen by some as a strategic move to strengthen its global influence and promote the interests of the Global South.

Here's a more detailed look at the situation:
    • Indonesia's Motivations:
Indonesia's decision to join BRICS is driven by a desire to elevate its global standing and play a more prominent role in addressing global issues. President Prabowo Subianto envisions Indonesia as a leader in championing the Global South and advocating for a more balanced global order.
    • Economic Opportunities:
Joining BRICS offers Indonesia access to potential economic benefits, including increased trade, investment, and infrastructure development through the New Development Bank (NDB).
    • Balancing Act:
While BRICS membership provides opportunities, Indonesia also needs to navigate the complex political landscape and avoid being perceived as aligning too closely with any particular bloc.
    • BRICS Expansion:
BRICS recently expanded to include new members like Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates, further solidifying its position as a major global force.
    • Partner Countries:
In addition to full members, BRICS also has partner countries, including Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam, who are not full members but participate in certain BRICS activities.
    • Global Significance:
BRICS's combined economic power and growing political influence make it a notable counterweight to the traditional Western-led global order.

Damn :eek2:

Indonesia to Cut Tariffs, on-tariff barriers in US trade deal, Trump official says

July 22 (Reuters) – Indonesia will drop tariffs to zero on more than 99% of its trade with the United States and will also eliminate all non-tariff barriers for American goods in a deal that cuts threatened U.S. tariffs on Indonesian products to 19% from an initial 32%, a senior Trump administration official said on Tuesday.

Indonesia will immediately drop its plans to levy tariffs on internet data flows and will support renewal of a longstanding World Trade Organization moratorium on e-commerce duties, the official told reports on a conference call held a week after the deal was first announced on July 15.

Indonesia also will remove recently enacted pre-shipment inspection and verifications of U.S. exports, which have posed problems for U.S. agricultural exports and contributed to a growing U.S. farm trade deficit, the official said.

In a win for U.S. automakers, the official said that Indonesia has agreed to accept U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards for vehicles exported from the United States to the growing country of 280 million people. Indonesia also has agreed to remove export restrictions on critical minerals and remove local content requirements products using these commodities shipped to the U.S.
