NAACP Hotline Puts the Focus on Voting

1-866-MY-VOTE-1

NAACP President and CEO Ben Jealous was joined by radio host Tom Joyner, American Urban Radio Networks Program Operations President Jerry Lopes and others on Tuesday to unveil a joint phone initiative to empower potential voters. 1-866-MY-VOTE-1 is a hotline that provides information on voter registration, polling locations and tools to report incidents at polling stations.

In light of voter-ID and other restrictive voting legislation, 1-866-MY-VOTE-1 may be an essential and easily accessible way to inform and protect black voters.

"What we've gone through in the past six months [is the] biggest wave of voter suppression since the wave following the Civil War," Jealous said. "We have to be prepared to make sure people get registered [and] turn out. We can only do that if we come together as one family."

1-866-MY-VOTE-1 received more than 300,000 calls in 2008 and helped to register almost 100,000 voters. And with several celebrities -- including Angela Bassett, Mary J. Blige, Robin Thicke and Kevin Hart -- on board to promote the hotline this year, 1-866-MY-VOTE-1 may shatter records as it takes on the 2012 presidential election.

A 93-year-old great-great grandmother who alleges she will be disenfranchised by Pennsylvania's recently enacted voter ID law heads to trial on Wednesday.

In legal action backed by the ACLU and NAACP, Viviette Applewhite claims she no longer possesses any of the documents she needs to get a photo ID. Without it, she won't be able to cast a ballot this November in the Keystone State. It's the latest clash in an ongoing back-and-forth between voter ID advocates and opponents.

Voter ID supporters argue that identification requirements for registered voters helps prevent voter fraud, ensuring the integrity of elections.

Adversaries say the ID requirements stand as a solution in search of a problem. The studies they cite suggest voter fraud occurs only in isolated incidents. By most calculations, shark attacks and UFO sightings are far more common. The laws to address such infrequent crimes, on the other hand, come at a huge potential cost to eligible voters -- particularly minorities, college students and the elderly. Some registered voters may be left disenfranchised by the laws, say voter ID opponents, but more worrisome are the institutionalized obstacles to voting that they say will discourage countless legitimate voters -- especially those who tend to lean Democratic -- from participating in elections.

The U.S. Department of Justice has stepped in as debate rages over voter ID law merits. So far, the U.S. has declined to approve strict new measures passed by Republican-controlled legislatures in South Carolina and Texas, arguing that they deserve scrutiny in federal courts. Earlier this week, the Justice Department announced it was investigating a similar law in Pennsylvania.

While voter ID proponents maintain that new provisions requiring photo identification are sensible and not overburdensome, despite some evidence to the contrary, the situation isn't always so simple.

“Since the beginning of 2011, 176 restrictive voting bills have been proposed in 41 states and have become law in 14 states. These statistics are alarming,” said IMPACT Director Joe Briggs. “The #VoteReady movement is designed to not only mobilize young people, but also to keep them informed.”

Through #VoteReady, voters will be able to:

•identify polling locations;
•contact boards of election;
•access state by state voting deadlines; and
•equip targeted audiences with best practices to educate community members on vote readiness.

The country is 33% minority, expecting to be over half shortly. Expect more bullshit down the road.

1. Getting rid/privatizing the Post Office, keeping healthcare mostly privatized, Social Security poorly funded and privatized. This will limit the powers of future hispanic presidents or Congresses and enable whites to control these functions and steer jobs to themselves.

Any measures to socialize will be blocked since a hispanic president may control these organizations.

2. Restrictive Voting Laws. Vote tampering.

3. Passing laws or obtaining rulings that ensure unlimited spending to control elections and minority candidates.

4. Cutting taxes, steering wealth to the top. Economic Slavery.

Obama Has 2500 Lawyers On The Ground In Ohio

November 3, 2012 | 6:00PM EDT

As we all know, the zeal of Republican Governors in the Battle ground states has been a serious cause for concern for all of us. They have tampered with the state elections laws now for 2+ years (OH, FL, VA, ..), trying to shape it to favor their constituency and disenfranchise Democratic voters.

As we get closer and closer to election night, prudence and vigilance are of the highest order. Don't let yourself bullied by Romney people at the polls and know your rights.

With all the polls now converging to give the president a clear path to victory, there is absolutely no doubt, how the Republicans are planning to win these elections.

They have done it before (2000 in FL) and they are determined to do it again. They have shows us that they have no shame. They have no conscience. They don't care about the people. They are determined to win BY ALL MEANS NECESSARY.

It is imperative that the Administration, the Voters and everyone involved be very vigilant about what goes on, as you get ready to cast your vote.

We already know that Romney has an army of ill-trained polls workers.
We already know that the RNC has hired dubious companies to throw away ballots of registered voters.

We already know how the Right Wing media tried to de-legitimize Obama's victory in 2008 by blaming ACORN. And they will do it again.
Just watch Fox News or listen to any right wing media.

The Obama team has dispatched thousands of lawyers to Ohio and are ready to get to work for the American People.

If you hit any problems while voting, make sure to document it and contact the OFA team nearest you. Research prior to going to the polls and have them on speed dial, if needed.

Let's get our people to the polls on Election Night. Let's make sure we remain vigilant and vote. And let's make sure our vote counts.
