NAACP to Bury "N" Word

DETROIT -- The NAACP held a symbolic funeral in Detroit 63 years ago for Jim Crow.

The civil rights organization will do the same this summer for the "N" word, the Rev. Wendell Anthony said Sunday.

Anthony, president of the civil rights organization's Detroit branch, said members and supporters of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People will conduct services and a "eulogy" for the racial slur. The mock funeral will be held during the NAACP national convention July 7-12 in Detroit, he said.

"We are committed to ending hate -- word and talk," Anthony said. "It doesn't do anyone any good, whether it's a journalist on TV or a rapper on the radio."

The announcement comes after a renewed discussion nationally about racial insensitivity, brought on by Don Imus' derogatory comments about black members of the Rutgers University women's basketball team.

Imus didn't use the "N" word in those comments, but was fired in early April by CBS Radio and NBC after major companies including General Motors pulled their advertising spots.

"Now that corporate America has caught up, maybe something will happen," Anthony said. "We have to stop investing in stuff that is killing us."

Jim Crow was the systematic, mostly Southern practice of discrimination against and segregation of blacks from the end of post-Civil War reconstruction into the mid-20th century.

EVERYTHING that has gone down since Imus is to appease white folks. NONE of this shit is being done to address or resolve SHIT in the black community, 100% of it is being done because white folks got twisted out of shape because of Imus getting stepped to and the fear in the black community to how they may respond. I hate to say the shit because I'm quick to jump on somebody else for saying it, but some of the leadership in the black community is nutless. Hate on Al Sharpton all you want, but he is the ONLY cat (in the national spotlight) not flip flopping and double talking when it comes to black issues (whether folks agree or not, dude is consistant).

HELL, these bastards don't even have the balls to use the Imus bullshit to address racism still prevalent in the WHITE community OR EVEN the general racial and cultural hatred so prevalent in talk radio (a more logical direction for this topic to head). This shit was flipped on black folks and black folks allowed it to be flipped (picture somebody calling your mother a cunt and then trying to flip the shit on you as their defense for doing so).

There will be plenty more empty, pointless gestures before it's all said and done and once the media gets tired of it and white folks feel we have properly atoned for a WHITE MAN being forced to use racial slurs by US, shit will go back to normal, but don't even fool yourself into thinking a dialogue is starting in the black community because this whole thing has SHIT to do with the black community (not to mention the fact that the dialogue has BEEN going on FOREVER, just because Oprah and CNN weren't following the shit doesn't mean it wasn't happening).

And that's a great point. White people didn't even bother to address white racism. There is even a white radio jock who is so pissed with this Imus thing, he started a new organization where whites can begin to defend themselves from attacks from Sharpton, Jackson. He claims he's not starting a white racial group but you know like I do, you can't know who is listning when you speak out on the airwaves. And you can't control what personalities these people listing will have.

i didn't live during the jim crow era so i can't speak on that.. but i do understand WHY they are doing this.. true it is ONLY symbolic.. but if we ALL took this word out of our vocab.. do you think it would make a difference...? i do... i mean words are very powerful... remember back when everyone was calling each other 'god'.. that was powerful in the since that it UPLIFTED... it made you feel like 'hey i'm a man of God and respect me as such'.... but maybe it's just me...
