I just want to let BGOL family know that my fiction novel just got published and i am very excited about it. However i need a little help from the family. I used a self publishing company to get this done since I couldn't get an agent who was willing to work with a first timer. They never like people with no name. So I am using channels like facebook and other social networks to get it out there. You can help me out too by posting this link (http://www.amazon.com/s/?tag=vp314-20) on your face book if you have one. If you also know bookstores that are willing to carry new authors please let me know and I will ship copies to them at a different price. if you also know agent or comapnies who are interested in buying the movie right to my book, I am all ears. Wish me luck in this new adventure !!!! Sorry, I dont know how to resize the picture!!!

man send a free copy to Oprah... if she likes it you will get all the pub you can handle...

I already thought about that and it s still my last resort but the oprah people usually like to see numbers before thay can consider a new author

Congratulations... We need more black authors, and I, myself, intend to join the ranks of people like you are doing this wonderful job.

How much did it cost you to publish the book; who owns the rights and what is the process involved in being published..

Thanks Nzinga, it can be tough if you dont know all the elements needed to get this done. if you are using a self publishing companies, most of the work is on you. I own the rights to my book and I have the manuscript as well. I used Oustskirtspress.com. check them out they are pretty good.

Thank you so very very very much....Please indulge as I might return to you with more questions, again, to everyone else, please just write... Today's story is tomorrow's history. Do not let others write our history.

The thing is if I succeed in this field, I intend to make the main character of my book (Jesse Winston) a recurring guy like alex cross of James Paterson. I already have five solid synopsis that will be turned into books if this one succeeds.

good shit. thats me that just requested you on fb. posting this link too

How long it took you to write your book

About a year between school and work. what took even longer was the editing part. After the editors went through i had to go through and accept ot reject every single changes they suggested and that took long. I can however write one in a month or two if I dont have anything else going on.

why would you wait for the first one to succeed before you start writing the next book in the series?

You have a solid synopsis, solid plot, supposedly a good storyteller. Sounds like you don't have high enough expectations of yourself.

So far you are a shining example to many of us. Put the self doubt on the shelf, there will be enough obstacles in your path. Besides, there are many authors who became successful after their first, second, third books got published.

The Bourne series didn't get a movie deal until many books and years after the first book was published and forgotten about. Stay in your lane, perfect your craft and the rest will come.

My 2 cents fam.

I appreciate your candid opinion. I am just the kind of person who likes to see results. I have invested quite a bit of change into this just to see how far i can push myself. writing needs encouragement. at least for starters like me. this is why i am trying to spread the word not necessarily for the money but for the publicity and that is what i need as a push for the subsequent ones.

The reason I ask is because Im currently writing a book and havent done nothing with it since March because Im stuck...Dont get me wrong I wrote ideas along the way to fit my story but most of the ideas is for the later books Im planning to write....:smh::smh::smh::smh:

I agree with Cyba, continue writing and publishing - this series and other ideas if you have them. Many writers usually do not get recognized until say perhaps the second or third book in a series -- or off a different novel they had written. Then people go and scrambled to catch everything else that author had written.

I read a lot and usually when I catch a "new" author that I like, it may be at book 6 or 7 in a series. I then tear through them all in one swoop - sometimes you enjoy the character and storyline more by reading them straight through without the gaps in waiting for the next book to drop.

Congratulations, good luck, and keep writing!

Congrats, I'm starting 2 books myself I was going to go with Amazon on it since I hear that in some cases you only get 1.00 per book sold that coul dbe fine if it sells 400 or 500k but I think amazon was 30% or 60% i cant remember anyway I figured write it forst then worry about the rst but I planned to self publish regardless then I'm going to Trojanhorse this bittch lol

congrats ill add you later on

It is always good to write your ideas down. that is half the battle won. the other thing you got to work on is consistency and try to view what you are writing as a movie in your head. when you are stuck like now you can also create twists to help guide you back to the main story. good luck with the book. I am always here if you need my advice

I am actually not aware of amazon publishing books. but they are carrying a digital copy of my book for sales too. they will get a percentage of the sales and the royalties.

OK I'm glad you said that. If you are really seeking results and need encouragement or honest criticisms there are many things you can do.

1. Public library - call the collections department of you regional library. The collections department will help you get the book into the library system. Once you get it into the local system, it'll be easy to get it into other library systems in the state then the USA. I don't know how this shit works in Germany.

2. Public Library - Programs and exhibitions departments - schedules bookreadings and they support local authors.

3. Website - Get a website for your character. This is a separate website from your book business. The character should have a life of his/her own and this life should eventually survive without your input. Like BGOL. HNIC only steps in to collect $10 and solve major problems. Build a list of hardcore fans that will move your shit for you.

4. email marketing - give away at least the first 2 chapters via PDF to your list.

5. social media - do what you did with bgol ask people 2 be your champions. Get them to give away your first 2 chapters to generate interest and lead them to your fan page and facebook page.

6. Facebook page - nuff said

7. Book reviews - find online book reviewers and get them to spread the word. There are many potential authors, authors and fans of literary works on this board, get them to write honest reviews.

Any more advice and I'll have to charge you. At least give me a copy of your book.

Cyba, thank you for your advice. I am already tackling some of the key points. one of my biggest issues is the fact that i have to rely on the net and the military library systems to promote the book. I am supposed to be doing radio shows and other promotional tasks. Being in Germany is not something i can change right now. however I will get with you and get your email address. looks like you know a lot about whats going on in the book world.

Nah fam,
I know alot about marketing. My wife has an MBA in marketing and has her own company. She does all the offline work I do much of the online work.

You can apply marketing to any field. Marketing is what sold the pet rock ... the most useless piece of shit in history. The fact that she worked in one of the largest public library systems in the world and helped break some people doesn't hurt.

Also, much of the work can be done while you are in Germany. You can line everything up for when you get back. You can at least get it into the library system in Rochester or Syracuse since you are a local dude.

Good luck

I am in no way, shape, or form a writer. However...I'm very inspired to see another Brother getting it done. Salute to you and all the other brothers in this thread that responded with words of encouragement.

Peace.

Your words of encouragement are inspiring. thank you much and thank you to all who are wishing me well. I really wish there could be more of us on this board. I am trying to branch out and write something fictional. I know there are a lot of brothers here who have ideas too. if only they will put the weed down and write.

I'll be back to this later, but congrats on your publication.

There is an all black publication firm over here in the states that might take on your distribution. I for the life of me can't remember their name but I'm sure a search will find them.
