If you marry a citizen, all sins are forgiven except criminal activity. "Sins" - is essentially being out of status - overstaying past your allowed time, working illegally.
One does not HAVE to become a citizen. If not, one has to renew the permanent resident card every x years. I think the number is ten.
As is, if dude gets caught, the 10 year ban is in effect. If she is really invested in the dude, she ought to marry him. Many people think it's a difficult process but if the marriage is legit, no attorneys are needed. Only people marrying just for the card might consider having an attorney.
