Dylan Chambers, son of music icon Lester Chambers, has just posted (6 pm PST on Facebook, Saturday, July 13, 2013:

"Dylan Here.... Lester was just assaulted on stage at The Russell City Hayward Blues Festival by a crazed woman after dad dedicated ‘People Get Ready’ to Trayvon Martin. He is on the way to the hospital now.”

Lester Chambers, founding member of popular 1960s recording artists, The Chambers Brothers, was on stage at The Russell City Hayward Blues Festival tonight when his son said the attack occurred. It is indeed disturbing news for the 73-year-old singer, who just yesterday announced on his Facebook page, he’d completed the last hurdle prior to releasing his first album in over 40 years.

Unfortunately, in the blink of an eye, and again in another 24-hour period, everyone’s favorite music icon was reported attacked onstage right after dedicating “People Get Ready” to Trayvon Martin. Lester’s friends and fans are encouraged to post well wishes and prayer notices on his Facebook page. Lester’s son Dylan will be posting updates on his condition as they become available. Already, 233 comments, prayers and well wishes have been posted on Lester's page, as his fans react to this breaking news.

This day is possibly the saddest day in Lester Chambers’ past year, contrasted to the past year, at last, one of the happiest years of his life. The good news is that his son, Dylan, is in his life to take good care of Lester, respected social media expert and enterpreneur, Alexis Ohanian, is working to secure a rejuvenation of the name and music for Lester Chambers on the 2013 music scene, and Rob Max and the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund have Lester’s back.

Details were murky for awhile, and based mainly on a son's Facebook page, as covered in this report . The assault took place at a Blues Festival in Hayward, Ca. Chambers was hospitalized and seemed to be feeling better, with bruised ribs and more. His Facebook page soon filed with condolences and photo of damage to his back.

Sadly he had just started a comeback (he's long claimed he was screwed over for royalties) aided by musician support groups and Kickstarter.

Lester Chambers goes all the way back to mid-'60s, when the group appeared with Joan Baez at Newport. The 11-minute "Time Has Come Today" came out around 1968 and appeared in numerous movie soundtracks, most famously (in its entirety, or so it seemed) at climax of the Jane Fonda/Jon Voight Coming Home. The group Appeared with John Lennon when John co-hosted Mike Douglas Show during a famous week in the '70s. And so on.

Later Sunda came the first mainstream account here. A woman, 43, had been arrested and charged with battery. Chambers' family firmly believes it was racial incident, citing the timing of her attack.

Legendary musician attacked after dedicating song to Trayvon Martin

HAYWARD, Calif. — Hayward Police arrested a Barstow woman Saturday night for reportedly attacking music legend Lester Chambers after he dedicated a song to Trayvon Martin.

Chambers, the 73-year-old singer of the legendary 1960's music group The Chambers Brothers, was assailed around 5 p.m. Saturday while on stage at Hayward Russell City Blues Festival.

According to police and witnesses, the singer had dedicated Curtis Mayfield’s “People Get Ready” to Martin when 43-year-old Dinalynn Andrews Potter jumped up and shoved Chambers to the ground after allegedly yelling “It’s all your fault!”

“Dylan Here.... Lester was just assaulted on stage at The Russell City Hayward Blues Festival by a crazed woman after dad dedicated People Get Ready to Trayvon Martin. He is on the way to the hospital now,” wrote Dylan Chambers, Lester’s son, on the musician’s official Facebook page.

Chambers was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital where he was treated and released.

Andrews Potter was subdued soon after the incident and detained by police. She was charged with suspicion of battery, cited and then released, according to Lt. Ruben Pola of the Hayward Police.

Pola added that additional charges could be brought against Andrews Potter later.

Dylan Chambers posted on Facebook Sunday that the singer, a Petaluma resident, was recovering at home from the attack.

“A bruised rib muscle and nerve damage and he is sore all over...” Dylan wrote to accompany a picture he posted on Facebook that showed Chambers’ 8-inch bruise on his back.

Chambers’ relatives said that the attack was racially motivated and want police to file hate crime charges against Potter.

Florida resident George Zimmerman had been charged with second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Martin, who was unarmed, back February 2012. Zimmerman had argued self-defense in the death, which sparked national controversy.

A jury found Zimmerman not guilty of all charges Saturday, which sparked protests all over the nation that evening and the following day.

Started in 1954, the Chambers Brothers, described on Wikipedia as a "soul music group," are best known for the 1968 hit single "Time Has Come Today."

The most interesting part of the story to me is that she pushed him down and yelled "It's all your fault!". So I'm guessing that in her feeble mind black folks are "race baiting" and the controversy around the Zimmerman verdict is all black people's fault (a leap but a logical one given all the CAC nonsense I've read/heard about this trial).
