Questlove Challenges Artists To Start Creating Music With A Message

questlove1.jpg

Hip Hop was once viewed as the voice of the urban oppressed, but much of the current state of the culture revolves around coveting wealth, material possessions, and sexual exploits. In a time when the entire nation is facing serious questions about police brutality and equal justice, some rap stars like Killer Mike, J. Cole, Q-Tip, Nelly, The Game, Lauryn Hill, and others have demonstrated their concerns with the legal and social issues facing the country through songs, protests, or public speeches.

But some people would like to see Hip Hop artists, and musical celebrities in general, take an even more active role in addressing societal concerns. Amir “Questlove” Thompson of the Roots is one of those individuals.

The drummer/producer wrote a message on his Instagram page asking all artists to use their music to express a message. Questlove referenced past musicians/social commentators Bob Dylan, Public Enemy, Nina Simone, and Zack de la Rocha as examples of the type of artists he would like to see rise in this generation. He also called on the media to provide more balanced content via their outlets.

Questlove posted the following picture to IG with the caption below.

<blockquote class="instagram-media" data-instgrm-captioned data-instgrm-version="4" style=" background:#FFF; border:0; border-radius:3px; box-shadow:0 0 1px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.5),0 1px 10px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.15); margin: 1px; max-width:658px; padding:0; width:99.375%; width:-webkit-calc(100% - 2px); width:calc(100% - 2px);"><div style="padding:8px;"> <div style=" background:#F8F8F8; line-height:0; margin-top:40px; padding:50% 0; text-align:center; width:100%;"> <div style=" background:url(data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAACwAAAAsCAMAAAApWqozAAAAGFBMVEUiIiI9PT0eHh4gIB4hIBkcHBwcHBwcHBydr+JQAAAACHRSTlMABA4YHyQsM5jtaMwAAADfSURBVDjL7ZVBEgMhCAQBAf//42xcNbpAqakcM0ftUmFAAIBE81IqBJdS3lS6zs3bIpB9WED3YYXFPmHRfT8sgyrCP1x8uEUxLMzNWElFOYCV6mHWWwMzdPEKHlhLw7NWJqkHc4uIZphavDzA2JPzUDsBZziNae2S6owH8xPmX8G7zzgKEOPUoYHvGz1TBCxMkd3kwNVbU0gKHkx+iZILf77IofhrY1nYFnB/lQPb79drWOyJVa/DAvg9B/rLB4cC+Nqgdz/TvBbBnr6GBReqn/nRmDgaQEej7WhonozjF+Y2I/fZou/qAAAAAElFTkSuQmCC); display:block; height:44px; margin:0 auto -44px; position:relative; top:-22px; width:44px;"></div></div> <p style=" margin:8px 0 0 0; padding:0 4px;"> <a href="https://instagram.com/p/wMVJ3AQa8p/" style=" color:#000; font-family:Arial,sans-serif; font-size:14px; font-style:normal; font-weight:normal; line-height:17px; text-decoration:none; word-wrap:break-word;" target="_top">I urge and challenge musicians and artists alike to push themselves to be a voice of the times that we live in. I know that many see what happened to Dixie Chicks' #NatalieMaines @mainesmusic (she bravely expressed her opinion/dismay on the Bush administration declaring war &amp; was unjustly targeted....while in hindsight being CORRECT) suddenly there was an onslaught of radio silence from artists across the board (correction not everyone was silent, but the silence was deafening) although I'm kinda/sorta addressing the hip hop nation I really apply this challenge to ALL artists. We need new Dylans. New Public Enemys. New Simones. New De La Roachas. New ideas! But it just doesn't stop there!! We need outlets (hello #ClearChannel #RadioOne #Vh1) to balance the system. Yeah I'm just as guilty of feeling the high of all that I despise ("Devil's Pie" D'angelo) but the reason why this nation seems to be moving 3 steps ahead in some areas.....but then 7 steps backwards in every area is a lack of balance. I'm not saying every song gotta be "Fight The Power" but in times like these we need to be more community minded (taking a wild guess that "urban radio's" format didn't change much from the pre program stuff (using that word *politely*) we've been hearing for years. &amp; when I say challenge I don't mean breathless race to the finish on who makes the more banging "Fuck Tha Police" sequel. I mean real stories. Real narratives. Songs with spirit in them. Songs with solutions. Songs with questions. Protest songs don't have to be boring or non danceable or ready made for the next Olympics. They just have to speak truth. I laugh &amp; have fun w "Bitch You Guessed It" like everyone else. But my soul is aching man. Seriously just ONE or Two songs that change the course. This is something I feel the need and urgency to put out there. #EricGarner #MikeBrown #JusticeForAll #FeedMySoul #HandsUpDontShoot #ICantBreathe</a></p> <p style=" color:#c9c8cd; font-family:Arial,sans-serif; font-size:14px; line-height:17px; margin-bottom:0; margin-top:8px; overflow:hidden; padding:8px 0 7px; text-align:center; text-overflow:ellipsis; white-space:nowrap;">A photo posted by Questlove Gomez (@questlove) on <time style=" font-family:Arial,sans-serif; font-size:14px; line-height:17px;" datetime="2014-12-04T17:09:40+00:00">Dec 12, 2014 at 9:09am PST</time></p></div></blockquote>

Again, these younger rappers are operating on fumes. Their adversity level isn't the same. And the social demands are different. Kendrick is squeezing juice out of turnip. But I don't know how much longer he can hug that Compton block. Same with J. Cole. Older heads like Nas, The Roots and Common can do it.

It's a cool challenge but I don't know.:dunno:

There's some stuff out there but it doesn't get highlighted.

Music with a positive message will never make it on the radio.

That should be grounds to boycott those stations then. I haven't listened to local radio in years for that very reason. If my radio is on in the car it's on sports radio or NPR.

Why don't he challenge himself and his colleagues to stop co signing, making stars out of, and making money off of these bullshit artists and back those with a message if it means so much to him? To me, he's aiming his gun at the wrong target.

Music with a message can make it in the radio. There is enough talent out there to make it so. Most heads are only listening to these songs out now because they like the beat and the hook anyway. You can fit a message in.

Everybody just likes feeling like a gangsta, pusher, hustler, asshole when they listen to music because that's all that's being pushed right now is to be a bad ass. Media can make whatever sound they want to be popular.

Quest is right. There is no balance and there needs to be.

Its all braggadocious shit. But I have a feeling Kendrick Lamar gonna bring us back around.

stopped listening to rap in 93
stopped listening to the radio in 87/88
stopped listening to R&B in 92
stopped listening to neo soul 8 months after it was 'hot.'

bottom line: ain't nobody MAKING real music anymore. it's a bunch of studio singers, computers, and other bullshit.

and people like beyonce are marketed as package entertainers = looks + dance = tour money. that music and those songs are like toilet paper... dead after 6 months and no fucks are given.

all current producers seem to start all their tracks with the same background

1. "finger snaps"
2. Vocal chorus "HEY HEY HEY HEY HEY HEY"
3. muffled synthesized pulse
4. uninspired flow
