Reasonable Doubt is 1st. I understand why he doesn't rank his first album his best though....pride fucking with him and shit.

Seriously, I don't give a fuck where the rest fall after 'Doubt'.

*two cents*

I'm surprised he put Black Album ahead of Vol. 2.

I had a big debate about the Black album

Its a weird but STILL classic records

cause they aint just hits on there not only classics on there

They got ICONIC anthems damn near TIMELESS MUSIC on there so its difficult to judge.

Yeah it's like mature, grown up rap

That is why I HATE HATE HATE whenever I hear someone is too OLD to rap anymore.

that is complete and utter bullsh*t

I would to hear Jay REVISIT that album and like fix it up

not 4:44 level introspective but just polish THAT particular album up.

This is before 4:44.

And Magna Carta is by far his worse album

looking back

we might be a little TOO harsh on that one too.

He eventually chose to go in another direction.
This week, DJ Premier sat down with Genius for the second edition of Genius Level, a live, in-depth discussion of the careers of music’s best and brightest helmed by Genius' Head of Artist Relations Rob Markman. The conversation encompassed a lot of Premier’s career, including his relationship with fellow hip-hop legend JAY-Z.

During the interview, Markman asked about a rumor that Premier was supposed to collaborate with Jay for a full album. Preem responded with a story about his original role on 2003’s The Black Album:

The Black Album. He brought it to my attention first. He said ‘the only thing is, I don’t want you to work with anybody for this little period of time, so that we can just do it in maybe a good two and a half weeks, and then it’s done, put it out (as) The Black Album.’ Then he put it on hold weeks later and he’s like ‘Scrap it, I'mma wait, I'mma do it later on in my career,’ and he ended up doing the Dynasty album, which is a dope album. I love Dynasty album.

The first album that Premier is referencing is Jay-Z’s The Black Album, which was also promoted as Jay’s final album before retiring from rap. Preem didn’t have any production on it, but the album went on to become a critical and commercial success, eventually certified triple Platinum. The second album is 2000’s The Dynasty: Roc La Familia. It debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 200 and was certified double Platinum. Premier’s story shows that Jay was thinking about and developing what would become The Black Album at least three years before it dropped in its final form.

Even though that particular collaboration album didn’t happen, the two have worked together on songs like “A Million and One Questions/Rhyme No More,”“D’evils,” and “So Ghetto.” Preem also has multiple beats on Jay’s 1996 debut album Reasonable Doubt.

Jay’s most recent album is 2017’s 4:44, which is fully produced by No I.D. 4:44was yet another No. 1 debut for Jay, and is already certified Platinum.

Read all the lyrics to DJ Premier’s biggest hits on Genius now and look out for the full Genius Level video dropping soon.

It's been downhill from reasonable doubt.
I get what u mean, but respectfully disagree. Reasonable Doubt is to Jay Z what Thriller is to MJ and Purple Rain is to Prince...aint nowhere to go but down after those monster classics, however by no means is it to say that the later coming titles arent very good quality bodies of work. In fact, many "real fans" dont agree that those critically acclaimed titles are the respective artists best works...however generally the mainstream fans do. Jay Z has consistently put out quality work, never fell off imo, but I like some will agree that some cd's are indeed better than others. I still would rather listen to anything by Jay, than any of these clowns out now.
