* now THIS may be the group that is the most forgotten when they talk about the great era in hip hop...these dudes were ILL and came on the scene crazy hard. Looking back the beats lyrics style flows and the dances? The death of Tah really devastated them and its interesting cause back in the day I don't believe realized how much he added to Cheek's whole aura.

From a down south cat, I was always a fan. This was one of my favorite joints, esp. during the summertime.

I feel like that back and forth between Cheeks and Freaky was so unique...

it merged the old school routines and sing/song from the golden era and added in some pop locking/dancing and the new school.

But Cheeks LYRICS weren't really appreciated I feel outside the CLASSIC Renee'

Mr. Cheeks of Lost Boyz – Interview

Thank you for taking the time out for this interview. For people who do not know already, can you tell me a little about Mr. Cheeks?

I am the lead emcee from the legendary rap group Lost Boyz. I have a catalog of joints I put out, “Renee, Lifestyles of the Rich & Shameless, Lex Coups Bimaz and Benz, Music Makes Me High, Me & My Crazy World, and Lights Camera Action.” Just to name a few.

Lost Boyz are a staple when mid 90′s Hip Hop comes to mind. Would you have been equally as motivated if you did not meet Freaky Tah, Spiggy Nice, and Pretty Lou?

I don’t know who I’d be if I didn’t meet Tah. But I do know the music wouldn’t be the same without him.

What you’ve witnessed growing up in Queens, New York is apparent in your music as a whole. How did you maintain focus early on as a hungry up-and-coming emcee, and not fully take the left turn towards the streets?

Growing up in Queens was good. Gave me what I needed to become who I am, some good, some bad. But, I’m blessed to be able to do something I love to do.

What is one of your most memorable moments in your career as an artist? And why?

The most memorable thing I love about this game is having the opportunity to meet Stevie Wonder, and he treated me like we grew up together. Just that love he showed me let me know I did something.

Having Gil Scott-Heron as an uncle and a guiding hand early on must have been extremely inspiring. Can you touch on this, and explain what role he played as an inspiration to your career?

Having Uncle around just made me more aware to the world; the good, the evil, the okey doke, the betrayal. The beauty of music.

If you could collaborate with one artist, dead or alive, who would it be, and why?

I wanted to work with Guru before he passed. We chilled and built a couple of times but never suited up to play. But, he was a good guy, a good man. I wanted to collab on a jazz album because the joint he did with Mo Betta was hard, and I wanted to rock out with his band and all. Also Marvin Gaye and Luther Vandross. I still have a list of people I want to rock with yet that’s another zone.

What’s your thoughts on the Hip Hop game currently?

I just make music. Not too caught up in what it is about now. Definitely not the same as when you had to have talent. But it is what it is. It’s more about money, watered down kinda. Plus nowadays you speak your mind-you’re a hater. I just say what it is. You do you, I do me.

Can you describe what it was like recording ‘Legal Drug Money’ and elaborate on the chemistry you and the crew had while molding the album?

We made the album off pure love. We went in and did what we do in the parties on the records, you know? Plus from the one when Spiggy would bounce us to the city in the blue joint we had. We had our ups and downs as a crew, but love kept it strong and possible to do the impossible.

What is one thing you would say, or recommend, to a new jack who is hungry and coming up in today’s game?

Be original.

By whom...dudes in NYC and the South rocked this group hard. Including Cali dudes.

BTW, these are my favorited from the SSJ LB fam (used to see them at the Coliseum back in the late '90s)

Remember, back in the 90s, after the East vs. West beef, came the Commercial vs. Underground beef. Hip-hop "purists" routinely shitted on Cheeks and the Lost Boyz as being too "commercial." I remember people calling him "Mr. Ass Cheeks."

I feel like that back and forth between Cheeks and Freaky was so unique...

it merged the old school routines and sing/song from the golden era and added in some pop locking/dancing and the new school.

But Cheeks LYRICS weren't really appreciated I feel outside the CLASSIC Renee'

"She wants to be a lawyer/ In other words, shorty studies law." :hmm:

peace

Was bumping this crazy as we had the album unmastered early 94/5 somewhere through some kats who rocked with BigDex

I remember when BigLez interviewed Tah in the park on RapCity about the LB Stomp where he broke down that it was more of a feeling & a dance. BucknakedTimDog was the A&R on that with them.
