Drake’s ‘Views’ Becomes First 2016 Album To Reach Triple Platinum Status

Drake has collected another platinum plaque. His recent album Views is now certified triple platinum.

A majority of those three million units came from streaming numbers. As of July, Views actually sold around 1.3 million copies.

With the shifting of music consumption to a more streaming based model, reaching 3x plat is still a major accomplishment. In fact, Views is the first album released this year to achieve that status.

Drake’s previous album Nothing Was The Same has been certified 3x platinum and Take Care is 4x platinum. His “mixtape” If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late currently sits at 2x platinum.

Views is up for Album Of The Year at the 2016 BET Hip-Hop Awards. The LP is a chart and sales smash, but it is also the worst reviewed project of Drake’s career.

I mean you can't call the cat a one trick pony and the fact that he can successfully go back and forth between hip hop, R&B and Dancehall mixing all three is why he's triple platinum and overseas as well...

Trust the rappers that don't like the mofo would trade places with him right now

NOTE: First list is 2016 YTD sales only; second list is "Billboard year" sales plus streaming, etc.

Why wouldn't they? Every album that's provided gets a cut of the $ that the streaming service gets from subscribers. They're still providing their content for a fee.

I shouldn't have to explain that to you.

Drake himself said that shit don't count.

nah - apple tunes and spotify etc....

a heavily discounted fee - there is a reason Taylor Swift has been careful about streaming - in some cases yanking her work off of the streams.

Platinum ain't Platinum no more -

Real fans BUY, they don't STREAM... this shit is almost like an artist in the 90s going gold because they counted his / her radio spins... You better believe Drake and the rest know its a gimmick now

SPS "gimmick" or not, Drake has outsold EVERY other living Black man with new music in 2016 COMBINED.
The receipts are posted - if you gotta say something, why not just say "Congrats!" and keep it moving?

Michael Jordan donated $5 million? Why wasn't it $10 million! Usain Bolt has double gold in three Olympics? Yeah but he he didn't set any new world records! President Obama walked on water? Why couldn't he hover and keep his feet dry! Some people just can't feel good about themselves unless they are marginalizing, belittling and otherwise shitting on someone else's accomplishments. Sad.

Drake is a pop-star. It is what it is. I don't respect who he is and barely like any work he's done, but his goal is to appeal to the masses, and he's accomplished that many times over.

So, salute to the fraudulent, light-skinned, bitch ass nigga for all of his wave-riding success.

This is why I don't care for Drake, or most of the music out in the States now..
This is supposed to be a party record but listen to how boring it is (I call it selfie music where people in the club would dance to themselves and take selfies to), listen to how cheap the production and how clique or cookie cutter the verses are...
Its like they are selling their lifestyle and how they are partying and living...

Now look and listen to this joint, and how this shit sound way more turned up, and much better and elaborate beat patterns that is designed to get people up and actually party by turning up the energy..
Notice how its not about them (the artist) partying, but rather about everybody partying and having a good time... Also its not promoting a lifestyle or how rich they are living, its about partying reliving stress by having fun...
Its like we forgot how to have fun, so instead we rather pretend like we are living large and chilling instead of doing the actual thing...

Well in the spirit of true Hip Hop, this is how the actual thing looks and sound like, as opposed to that fake hip hop, corporate, commercial, social media, digitally altered, wack shit, that is created by board rooms, technicians and funded by bankers money... Notice how white its starting to look...:smh:
Back in the black American was the trend setters always pushing the envelope when it came to new sounds and visuals, but now we are pushing recycled cookie cutter bullshit over and over again..
Now it at the point where the Carabian is even making better and more unique videos than us, something that we started out doing...

Man we need to kick all these lame, media pushed rappers to the curb and get back to our essence of what Soul music really was about, if not we will wind up thinking looking and acting more and more like the souless CAC's...

I disagree - the issue isn't Drake- any criticism is about the status of the industry and the schemes and failure of RIAA.

Drake is hot - but going triple* platinum* in a market where real sales volume is down- the urban pop genres in the industry is currently floating along on gimmicks - for a really good comparison look at the country genre.

Real fans buy the product.

We don't have any REAL artists popping in the urban market right now - RiRi n Drake and co are doing ok - but there is no diversity - everything sounds the same.

If a major label ever inks a real distribution deal with labels in the Caribbean ...
:itsawrap:
urban /pop in America will be shifted harder than it was in the mid 80s

Gold and Platinum has NEVER been solely about one specific numerical criteria. At one time the criteria was based on wholesale actual dollar sales - and then later there were all of the outrageous "shipped" vs "sold" controversies. I'm been involved with the industry long enough to remember the last major overhaul to RIAA certifications; in 1988 only TWO singles sold the two million copies necessary to be certified platinum ("Push It" by Salt-N-Pepa" and "Pump Up The Volume" by M/A/R/R/S). The next year, the RIAA reduced those requirements in half for the same award. While I'm no fan of the new SPS metrics, to most accurately measure popularity it is the reality of the music industry in 2016.

but in all the cases it was for sold product... consumers actively chose and bought those singles or albums ...
even when iTunes took over, the metrics used were still counting an active choice.

IMO counting streams is not and can not be a true reflection of consumer choice...
the most accurate metric for popularity, for marketability, for bookings, is still: "how many people spent their money to buy this artist's work"

he makes catchy music, thats all. His rhymes/lyrics suck. His best lyrics are probably not even better than something from the 80's. He sounds as if he is not sure if he should rap or sing. I guess people like him because everyone else thats putting stuff out is cornier than him. He is Ja Rule with a softer voice. In a list of rappers, i have him behind Kobe and Chris Webber. However, he does edge out Bow Wow Souljah Boy.

I agree. They need a better way of counting "sales" streams don't really count

Drake is a pop artist no doubt; props to him and his team for their success; I wouldnt go no where near that album, but hey clearly my opinion is in the minority...:hmm:

Mannnnn in this day and age...

Them numbers have to be altered
streams factor into sales now. that help artist sell more records. big sean went platinum without technically selling a million units( physical , downloads etc.) i doubt he sold 500,000.

Ninjas got to understand that rap is mainstream. White people are listening now and it's more accepted. I went to the Drake concert at barclays in 2013 and you would think Pearl Jam was doing a concert. Hell I'm near MSG for training and the 4 concerts drake had at MSG was mostly white people. I think I saw only like 5 black and spanish chicks walking into the arena.

Rappers are making rap that appeals to white people more. Look at Pitbull and Flo Rida. Ninjas was hardcore rappers to Ibiza pop stars and they're making money. 7 or 8 years ago if you told me Flo Rida or Pitbull would be worldwide artist I wouldn't believe you.

1 - Urban music is not just rap, but RnB / Black & Rap charts...
2- yeah rap is mainstream now - but sales numbers are down for rap and urban music by a greater % vs pop and especially country (imo -the people - including whites- have spoken)
3 - Pitbull and Flo-Rida borrow heavily and many times just straight jack from caribbean artists - Its one of the reasons I said that if a major signs a distribution deal in Haiti, Trinidad or Jamaica - our market will shift harder than it did in the 80s
4- (rant) another thing - IMO the main reason you are seeing so many whites at a Drake Ri, Bey concerts is the ticket prices
No way in hell the average kid can afford a concert ticket today! A pair of regular to nose bleed seats can run $200 to $500 - Floor / preferred seats are more expensive than a European vacation - I swear I could fly to Tokyo first class and spend a week at the Four Seasons for the price of 1 Platinum /VIP pass.... How can more fans truly feel engaged or connect to Drake if they can't even see him live? - /Kanye, Bey and Ri etc came up before the current BS so they don't have the problems that I see with Drake as an artist
