Much of America asks: Where did winter go? Spring starts early as US winter was warmest on record

Wasn't it El Nino?

Yeah, but the cold air didn’t stay locked in like it usually does.

We got the polar vortex to breakouts, but the phenomena that blocks the cold air from retreating back to the north was weak or wasn’t present.

The North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). I know this graph is a lot but what you’re looking at are the lines above the median (positive amplitudes).

When the amplitude is negative, that means there is a high pressure present that will lock in the cold air. As you can see the NAO remained positive with some negative dips, but nothing long term.

The moisture for winter precip was there. Just not the cold air.

And you think it was bad in the states Europe really felt the heat this winter.
