Been on a 30s/40s film kick these last few months.
Something I used to do when we had only 6-12 TV channels way back when.
YouTube has a variety of channels that show a ton of this stuff.
This was a GREAT one.
It has Claude Rains and a pre-KING KONG Fay Wray.

Thanks! Definitely need to get on that. Thanks for co-signing it! Speaking of consistent shows, we were really pleased getting all caught up with Peaky Blinders. Took us 6 months, but 5 seasons at only 6 eps each. Held our interest throughout. On some real shit, rest in peace in real life to Helen McCrory. Lost her battle to cancer earlier this spring. She too kept it under wraps to only her immediate circle, as did Chadwick Boseman. Also caught everyone off guard. “Aunt Pol” from the series.

Checked out Host the other day. Had watched a bit of it previously, but saved it and set it aside. It's an easy watch at under an hour, though I wouldn't have minded if it had a longer running time with an additional 30 - 45 mins and a larger budget. It picks up about 20 - 25 mins in, though the ending is quick and abrupt. Here's some links, and the last one's Shudder's official Youtube channel ...

The film has its basis in a short video created by Rob Savage in early 2020. The short featured Savage investigating strange sounds in his attic while on a group video chat with others. It was initially intended as a prank, as the others were unaware that a frightening visage would pop up on camera, and Savage placed the video online, where it went viral.[2][3] Savage found the format easy to watch and chose to apply it to a feature-length film. He has stated that the short's success enabled him to create Host.[2]

Host was filmed while quarantine restrictions were in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Savage had to direct the actors remotely while they had to set up their own cameras, lighting, and stunts.[4] Practical effects were also handled by the actors and a virtual workshop was held on how to set up effects such as "moving doors, making things fly off shelves". Savage has stated that the movie took twelve weeks to complete, from conception to its delivery to Shudder.[5]

Didn't seem like the typical Guy Ritchie movie. Didn't have the flare. It was gritty and dark. I thought it was enjoyable. Had some good action.

Black movie, so I was going to support.

Good first effort with Daniel O directing, but nothing special.

Nice family movie.

I still want to know why they moved to where they moved, that didn't make much sense.

MONSTER

What defines a person as a monster?

PRAISE: Adapted from Walter Dean Myers MONSTER is about Steve Harmon is a 17-year-old honor student whose world comes crashing down when he's charged with felony murder. He soon faces a complex legal battle that could leave him spending the rest of his life in prison.
The cast including : Kelvin Harrison Jr.,Jennifer Ehle,Tim Blake Nelson,Rakim "A$AP Rocky" Mayers,John David Washington,Jennifer Hudson andJeffrey Wright turn in strong and soulful performances. I thought the narration by the main character was a nice touch because i could feel more for the character his frustrations, fears and questioning his associations and motivations that led to him being in such a terrible situation. The court room drama portions of the film also rang true especially when even the positives in your life can be turned into negatives when you are on trial. All the way to it's final shots the film made me wonder if Steve was just a victim of bad association or was he truly involved in the crime committed.

PROBLEMS: I had slight issues with the pacing in the film.I thought the film missed an oppurtunity to flesh out the characters that were Steve's friends.Instead of focusing on their feelings on his plight we just get a couple of dwelling scenes of reflection.

Watched the first hour of 50-50 and gonna finish the rest tonight. Had meant to get around to it years ago, but just hadn't. Filmed in Vancouver, Richmond, and Seattle ... so it was cool recognizing a number of shooting locations. One of the funniest moments for me was seeing 2 of them walking the dog in an alley. I recognized the damn alley as they made their way onto the street. Reason being - I've parked in the area a number of times in the past 5 years as there's a stretch of blocks that have a shitload of Christmas lights each season. Good place to walk through during the holiday season. I usually park a block from there. Another funny moment was seeing the blonde at the bookstore that Seth Rogen was talking to. Knew I recognized her from somewhere. Googled her. She was on a kid/teen show that was popular in Canada nearly 30 years ago in the early-90s. She's a bit older than me.

Good acting from Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the movie.

And fuck you to cancer, for real. We've all been impacted by the disease through our friend & familial contacts at some point.

50/50 is a 2011 American black comedy-drama film directed by Jonathan Levine, written by Will Reiser, and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, Anna Kendrick, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Anjelica Huston. The film is loosely inspired by Reiser's own experience with cancer, with Rogen's character Kyle based on Rogen himself. It was filmed from February to March 2010. 50/50 was released on September 30, 2011, and grossed $41 million, and received critical acclaim, with particular praise for Gordon-Levitt's performance and Reiser's screenplay.[4]

APE vs MONSTER

Monster Mess

PRAISE: This flick provides some great unintentional laughs. Hilarious how some of the characters were beyond uncaring about others. I stuck it out because I was waiting for a certain character to bite the dust in a big way

PROBLEMS: ULTRA bad acting coupled with terrible CGI and a plot that made no sense.Sure have a conversation in Russian with no subtitles.
Eric Robert's looks like they woke him up from a bad bender to film his scenes.
The script was structured in such a way that the crappy CGI wouldn't have to be used that much.
I could question tons of things that happen and don't happen in this flick but I know the answers to the questions are LOW BUDGET !!

Scale of 1 to 10 a 2
Eric Roberts was never even a decent actor. If I watch something he's in it is purely by accident. I wonder who he had to fuck to be in Dark Knight

Agreed. His resume is definitely a head scratcher.

His sister Julia's a way better talent, with way less credits, lol.

In a career spanning over 40 years, Roberts has amassed more than 609 credits,[3] including Raggedy Man (1981), The Pope of Greenwich Village (1984), The Specialist (1994), Cecil B. Demented (2000), National Security (2003), A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints (2006), The Dark Knight (2008), The Expendables (2010), Inherent Vice (2014), The Institute (2017) and Head Full of Honey (2018). His equally varied television work includes three seasons with the sitcom Less than Perfect, as well as recurring roles on the NBC drama Heroes and the CBS soap opera The Young and the Restless, as well as Saved by the Light, the legal drama Suits, Fox's The Finder, and the only non-UK actor to play The Master in the 1996 Doctor Who television movie.

Since the 1970s, he is one of few actors in history to have more than 600 credits (blockbusters, independent films, animated films, TV series, animated series, short films and student films).[4][5][6][7]

Love shark movies. Rooting for the shark. Dinosaur movies I'm rooting for the killer dinosaur. Alligator movies...yep, rooting for the alligator

People suck, so I hope the make believe ones don't make it It's like killing a biker or a rando walking down the street on GTA V

A surprising 8

Pretty simple. Even though the actors were unknown , they didn't act poorly or pull a Eric Roberts and just mail it in

The Aussie Matthew McConaughey clone held his own. But there were only 5 people throughout most of the movie. Low budget, but the only part that showed the low budget was the first shark visual

20 minutes left and it's still worth the watch. Definitely watchable. Easy 8. Nothing so far to push it lower

**Edit**

Okay, the end lost it at least half a point lol

It was cool. It was like Chris Rock's response to the police shootings of black people. The most gruesome trap was the first one. The rest of them were pretty average and weren't as creative as I expected, but I guess they have a hidden meaning. Sam Jackson isn't in it that much.

I felt like I fell asleep during some of this, but didn't, because some of this was so unnecessary. I didn't understand Angelina's job and why it mattered to the movie. She could have just been a hiker. The fire fighters were nowhere to be found while this big blaze was going on, and they finally come after everything. And how they survive, how long did they hold their breath? It was pretty cool and entertaining though.

The Woman in the Window

WINDOW WASH OUT

PRAISE: I was amazed that such a talented group of actors were in this flick about an Agoraphobic Doctor named Anna Fox who witnesses something she shouldn't while keeping tabs on the Russell family, the seemingly picture perfect clan that lives across the way.
All of the actors including : Amy Adams, Gary Oldman,Anthony Mackie
Fred Hechinger,Wyatt Russell, Brian Tyree Henry,Jennifer Jason Leigh and Julianne Moore do a fine job with the time they are given.
There are some nice visual touches and noticeable nods to Rear Window.
The film really tries to create some original moments by altering characters and narratives. There are some thrilling moments near the climax of the film but.....

PROBLEMS: Its to little to late. A lot of talent was underused. The slow pacing coupled with to many uninvolving moments that were set up like a stage play took me out of the movie. One moment in particular was to put a nice bow on everything at the end of the film but it could have been reduced to a minute.
Usually Director Joe Wright is excellent at even making the most drawn out scenes mesmerizing but not this time.
I recommend watching 1987's The Bedroom Window starring Steve Guttenberg over this movie.

wasted my time with this piece of shit movie

so much talent wasted

dont bother

There been a lot of stinkers the past year plus. Is the pandemic the blame for this? I mean even the Denzel Washington movie was just a waste of talent in my opinion. It's like they didn't finish production and just rushed through it with a lot of these movies

Does anyone else feel like this? I can't really count the amount of movies that have come out the past 2 years that are on my will watch again list

Checked it out yesterday. Enjoyed it for what it was, as did you. A smaller budget film which was reasonably acted. Really liked the assorted camera angles. The aerial shots via drone. The underwater shots looking up at the craft. The surface level of the water. The drone quickly panning over the water at low height for some shots.Showing the legs and feet when retrieving a paddle in one scene. The fear of the unknown, as with all shark movies. Suspend your disbelief at the end. Enjoy the camera angles. And Katrina Bowden is easy on the eyes. Got one of her big breaks years back on 30 Rock.

Angelina been rich too long, she looks like a rich woman with cosmetic surgery trying to play a rugged blue collar worker.

I was surprised to see so many big stars and familiar faces in this B movie. Must have been a good script but the director dropped the ball.

I really enjoyed this.
The dudes that do the kung fu skits on the MartialClub youtube channel had small roles in this. Another set of youtubers made it to the big screen.
The movie itself is about these three gung-fu students who get back together years later after their sensei gets murdered and attempt to solve what seems to be a death made to look like an heart attack. They get into some hilarious situations, including a former student of another MA school that they used to bully. The story unfolds in layers but is pretty predictable. The fun in the movie is the ride, not the "mystery" of the sensei's death.
Its mostly a lot of humorous scenarios of middle-aged men doing getting-too-old-for-this-shit kung fu and the viewers getting a laugh at their expense.
A standout performance by Matt Page who seemed to be doing his best impression of Michael McDonald from MadTV as Carter, the former whimp that the "three Tigers" used to bully. He pretty much stole every scene he was in.
Its a fun watch. I'm not going to rate it. Its primarily a comedy. If you like kung fu and comedies, watch it. If not, skip it.

Zacks Zombies !!

PRAISE: The Walking Dead, Zombieland, Dawn of the Dead....can Zack Snyder infuse some new blood into a decades old genre?
In this story that happens after a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas, a group of mercenaries takes the ultimate gamble by venturing into the quarantine zone for the greatest heist ever.
Snyder does introduce a few new things and actually had one idea I had hoped he had done more with.
The film knows it has a blank check from Netflix and a 2 and a half hour plus running time and that's a good and bad thing. The movie does its best to develop the characters in the film with that time.
The cast including Dave Bautista,Ella Purnell,Omari Hardwick,Ana de la Reguera,Theo Rossi
Matthias Schweighöfer,Nora Arnezeder,Hiroyuki Sanada, and Tig Notarodoes are enthusiastic enough to fill the shoes of the colorful characters.
I am impressed by the some last minute CGI work that had to be inserted into the film.
There are some great kills and visuals and writer's Zack Snyder,Shay Hattenand and Joby Harold pile on perilous predicaments that are fun and involving.I was amused by the glimpses Snyder gave of how crazier the movie could have been.

PROBLEMS: It doesn't take long for the movie to go down predictable paths and create a huge plot hole by introducing a certain story thread. The film asked me to suspend disbelief several times especially for a couple of situations that happen near the end of the film.
The film runs out of steam here and there and it's as if the urgency in the plot is forgotten several times.

Just a heads-up about one that might be worth seeing in the future. My mom's a part of a book club & they really liked this one. Said the movie adaptation's on their radar. Looks like they're currently filming (looks like a 2022 release?) ...

Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI is the third non-fiction book by the American journalist David Grann.[1] The book was released on April 18, 2017 by Doubleday.[2][3][4] Time magazine listed Killers of the Flower Moon as one of its top ten non-fiction books of 2017.[5] A film adaptation directed by Martin Scorsese and set to star Jesse Plemons, Leonardo Dicaprio, Lily Gladstone, and Robert De Niro is currently in production.[6]

The book investigates a series of murders of wealthy Osage people that took place in Osage County, Oklahoma in the early 1920s—after big oil deposits were discovered beneath their land.[7][8] ...

Killers of the Flower Moon is an upcoming American Western crime drama film directed and produced by Martin Scorsese, and written by Eric Roth based on the nonfiction book of the same name by David Grann. Leonardo DiCaprio, who also served as producer, stars alongside Robert De Niro, Jesse Plemons, and Lily Gladstone.

Members of the Osage tribe in the United States are murdered under mysterious circumstances in the 1920s sparking a major F.B.I. investigation involving J. Edgar Hoover.

Killers of the Flower Moon was expected to begin production in February 2021 in Oklahoma.[1] Principal photography ultimately began on April 19, 2021, and is set to last for seven months.[21][22] Filming is taking place in Osage County and Bartlesville.[21][23]

On May 13, De Niro suffered a quadriceps muscle leg injury off-set and returned to New York City for medical attention; production was not delayed, as De Niro's scenes will be filmed in June 2021.
[24]

The film is set to be produced by Scorsese's Sikelia Productions and DiCaprio's Appian Way Productions and distributed by Paramount Pictures and Apple TV+.

A Quiet Place 2

Silence is Golden

PRAISE: Picking up to nearly where the great A Quiet Place left off this chapter revolves around the Abbott family now facing the terrors of the outside world as they continue their fight for survival in silence.
The cast including Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe ,Cillian Murphy and Djimon Hounsou does a great job with their expressions of fear, determination, raw emotion and bravery.
Director and writer John Krasinski knows surviving in Silence is the main ingredient that makes these movies work and actually doubles up on it.
There are great how can I hold my tongue in extremely painful or perilous moments
Krasinski manages to make the murderous creatures more agile, limber and intimidating.
There is a great Alien vibe for a portion of the movie
Krasinski can take a calm scene go to pure panic and anxiety in 0 to 4 seconds!!

PROBLEMS: Spotty predictable moments. I thought one character arc was going somewhere and thought well this will be...NOPE GRAND OPENING....GRAND CLOSING !!
Some of the movie has a been there done that feel that I've seen in a dozen end of the world as we know it movie's and TV shows.

Not as great as the first film but really how can you top something that was beyond involving and original
