JOHN WICK CHAPTER 2

The seemingly invincible assasin John Wick returns in JOHN WICK CHAPTER 2 after getting his Mustang back John wants to settle into a quiet life with his dog but an Italian crime lord Santino D'Antonio (Riccardo Scamarcio)comes calling ,and wants John to assassinate his sister Gianna (Claudia Gerini)

This is one of those mega hyped up one man against 100 movies that i love. It's stylish for the most part, and every action scene is done up to a T,including one in which Wick faces off against Gianna's bodyguard Cassian (Common)
I also liked how the film gives us more of look into the "league of Assasins he is a part of

Some of the action is quite cartoonish at times and im not sure if certain things were just done to get a few laughs and give the audience a breather

Still im looking forward to chapter 3

Scale of 1-10 an 8½

The Lego Batman Movie

This film is a tongue in cheek spoof and tribute to everything Batman
It's a lot of fun and there are so many quick jokes, sight gags and pop culture references right after the other
that i did start to feel the flick was a bit rushed and jumbled at times.
Great voice work from the entire cast including: Will Arnett as Bruce Wayne / Batman, Zach Galifianakis as Joker, and Michael Cera as Dick Grayson /Robin
In the end as a HUGE Batman fan this was pretty much brilliant and high praise to all of the technical workers who worked hard on this film, its much appreciated !!

Brandon's review

I loved it for the most part, huge smile on my face throughout most of the movie
Some of the jokes were a bit odd to me but i had a lot of fun with it.
Cant wait for Lego Ninjago i've watched the trailer about 12 times

Scale of 1-10 a 9

Fifty Shades Darker

This is really just more of the same as the first film, but this one includes a psycho ex,a leacherous boss, and the woman who is Christian Grey’s business partner and former lover.
Sure Dakota Johnson is fun to look at in lingerie and undressed but this is a good looking film that really goes nowhere,no real suspense nada !! Simulated sex scenes are dry and stiff,it's actually worst than the first film which i gave a 6 in 2015
Skip it unless you are a mega fan of this clunky stuff

John Wick, enjoyed it a lot

Passengers, ehhhhh, it was ok. It could have been a lot better.

Hacksaw Ridge, it was ok. War scenes were done well.

A CURE FOR WELLNESS

In A Cure for Wellness Dane DeHaan portrays Lockhart a corrupt executive at a financial firm which is equally corrupt
who is sent to retrieve a man named Pembroke from a sanotorium in the Swiss Alps so they can pin all of the bad deeds on him and sign off on a merger,a task hrder than it seems and soon Lockhart becomes a patient himself and the creepy mystery begins

I loved the ominous cold feel of this movie. It held my interest as Lockhart attempts to figure out what is happening at the sanotorium.
The music is haunting and this world of creepiness surrounded me.There are some interesting turns in the the film, some of it actually reminded me of the old Hammer Horror films.
But it just takes a LOOOOOONNNNNGGG TIME to get to the good stuff.
The film meanders, and it's verey repetitive and at least 20 minutes could have been cut.Does it go off the rails at times?,yes it does, but when it's terrifying and interesting it does so in a big and surprising way.I give it points for originality.
Definitely not for everyone but worth a look.

Scale of 1-10 a 7½

THE GREAT WALL

As the film states in it's opening this is one of the legends of The Great Wall of China, built to keep out creatures called Taotie who invade the China countryside to feed every 60 years.
Matt Damon is William Garin a Hawkeye like mercenary who with his partner Tovar (Pedro Pascal) team up with the Chinese warriors to stop the menacing creatures

This is a beautifully shot film with some sleek CGI and action sequences
I know some have complained about the "white savior" thing but Garin advises them once and that's about it,they appreciate and admire his skills but they basically dont rely on him.

There is a lack of depth to the story and characters.I could see moments that character developement could have occured but it just doesnt happen.Damon has a weird in and out accent.I did laugh at the futile Cirque du Soleil style fighting part of the warrior group did over and over again
There is a basic feel to all of it i do admire the ambitions of the film though
It's entertaining but dont go in looking for high drama

Scale of 1-10 a 7½

FIST FIGHT

I thought the first trailer for this movie was kind of bland but it was the red band trailer that made me see this in the theatre.
This is basically Three O'Clock High (one of my favorite movies) except this tiime around it's teachers that will duke it out when the bell rings at 3.
Far more raunchier and salty than the 1987 film
The main event occurs on the last day of school, teacher layoffs, and senior prank day
I felt the frustrations of History teacher Ron Strickland (Ice Cube) as he deals with a beyond obnoxious student in an over the edge way Charlie Day as Mr. Andy Campbell is a witness to this, and to save his job rats out Strickland and it's fight time

There is some fun to be had with the build up to the fight and the sight gags and some decent laugh out loud moments, but when this movie stalls and runs out of steam it does so in a big way.The actors give their best for the most part, but jokes that dont work are done over and over again as if to try to trick the audience into liking them

At least the fight lifts up the audience out of the dull and repetitive moments

This is a good rental for a slow Saturday night

Wanna check this out, I worked on a rig for a got minute.....

The disaster portion of the film is intense. Extreme chaos and panic. Watched the trailer after seeing the film. Like how they contrasted the build-up of the movie (first 1/3rd) with when things went wrong.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deepwater_Horizon

Deepwater Horizon was an ultra-deepwater, dynamically positioned, semi-submersible offshore drilling rig[8] owned by Transocean. Built in 2001 in South Korea by Hyundai Heavy Industries,[9] the rig was commissioned by R&B Falcon (a later asset of Transocean),[10] registered in Majuro, and leased to BP from 2001 until September 2013.[11] In September 2009, the rig drilled the deepest oil well in history at a vertical depth of 35,050 ft (10,683 m) and measured depth of 35,055 ft (10,685 m)[12] in the Tiber Oil Field at Keathley Canyon block 102, approximately 250 miles (400 km) southeast of Houston, in 4,132 feet (1,259 m) of water.[13]

On 20 April 2010, while drilling at the Macondo Prospect, an uncontrollable blowout caused an explosion on the rig that killed 11 crewmen and ignited a fireball visible from 40 miles (64 km) away.[14] The fire was inextinguishable and, two days later, on 22 April, the Horizon sank, leaving the well gushing at the seabed and causing the largest oil spill in U.S. waters.[15]

GET OUT

Part satire, part commentary on modern day race relations and part comedy Get Out is one of the most interesting and involving horror films i have ever seen.

Director and writer Jordan Peele slickly directs this film about a young black man named Chris who along with his white girlfriend travel to meet her parents for the first time. The parents come off as liberal but with some condescending edges.
It's not long before Chris notices the odd behavior of the black servants and realizes something sinister is going on.

Peele takes jabs at racism, interracial relationships and if we truly have become more accepting of each other as a whole no matter what our racial background is.

I never really found the film scary but its absolutely engaging, funny, and mysterious.
The cast which includes Daniel Kaluuya,Allison Williams,Catherine Keener, Erika Alexander,Bradley Whitford
,Caleb Landry Jones,Lil Rel Howery,LaKeith Stanfield,Betty Gabriel ,Marcus Henderson and Stephen Root are all incredible
The films only flaws are some predictable turns and the ending is a bit lackluster
Get Out is highly entertaining.Great first time at bat by Peele

Scale of 1-10 a 9

COLLIDE

Another bland action film.Collide actually feels like one big car chase coupled with a story about a guy returning to drug dealing to pay for his girlfriends medical procedures. Then in a heist goes bad and he has to go on the run.
Ben Kingsley turns in an odd but funny performance,Anthony Hopkins sleepwalks through most of the movie. Some of the action is fun though, but most of the film is uninvolving and stiff.
This movie was made for a long plane ride or if you are waiting for a plane to arrive
Play a little game while watching it and try to figure out how much they paid for bullets and cars for this
flick

Scale of 1-10 a 4½

Passengers, ehhhhh, it was ok. It could have been a lot better.

the dialogue/chemistry between the actors was cool...the action was irrelevant since it only served as a backdrop for another 'boy meets girl...' movie...I was disappointed that I was able to predict the bulk of the story once the camera panned to his pod opening up

LOGAN

If this is truly Hugh Jackman's last appearance as Logan/Wolverine/Weapon X/James Howlett,im glad he gets to do it in full berserker barrage mode.
In 2029 mostly all of mutant kind has been wiped out,and Logan is finally aging ,and not healing as fast as he used to.He's caring for Proffesor X who is suffering from dementia, along with the mutant tracker Caliban.
Amutant much like Wolverine named Laura, walks into their lives who's being tracked by Donald Pierce
and the Reavers and the fun begins.

Logan is ultra violent and laced with salty dialogue, but it also has heart and extremely strong performances.
Jackman does a lot of acting with his eyes in this one,and it's an incredible performance.
I will definitely miss seeing him in this role he was born to play.
Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier / Professor X is as grand as ever never missing a beat as he and Jackman play well together.
Dafne Keen as Laura / X-23 is the young acting find of 2017 so far, very natural as the feral character she portrays, but also adding nice touches of innocense
Director James Mangold has put together a rousing story of a world weary hero that is very strong and riveting

It's only flawas are a couple of predictable turns.A character is introduced who personifies what i have come to detest about Sci Fi and Comic Book based T.V shows as of late.Fortunately the character is used sparingly
Boyd Holbrook as Donald Pierce fortunately balances this aforementioned character out

Logan is Terminator 2,Firestarter,with a little bit of Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome coupled with an X-Men story and it's one of the best movies based on a comic book character, that i have ever watched

Scale of 1-10 a 9

Before I Fall

There is an uplifting ,life affirming message in Before I Fall, but unfortunately it takes a long ,grating and obnoxious time to get there.
I like all the actresses the movie focuses on but the portrayals and the dialogue made this Ground Hog Day like story hard to sit through. At least Zoey Deutch as Samantha Kingston who's life is in repeat mode until i do this and that becomes more likeable, but i should have waited for cable

KONG SKULL: ISLAND

King Kong and i go way back to Thanksgiving days of Kong Movie marathons,to my mini obssesion of collecting anything Kong.
So i was hyped up to see what they came up with for KONG SKULL: ISLAND
Technically and SFX wise the film was a joy to watch. So many original creatures with an unusual look.Kong himself, far larger than he has ever been in any other film. They come up with some great action sequences to display why he is called King.

The only really fleshed out characters are Samuel L. Jackson as Preston Packard, an United States Army Lieutenant Colonel and John C. Reilly as Hank Marlow, an eccentric lieutenant
They have the best one liners also ,the rest are bland and the dialogue is bad and grating ,so much so i felt bad for the actors that had to speak the words

KSI never takes itself seriously and i never took it seriously, its a fun romp though

Life looks pretty dope.

Kong was good to me. The best one easily and better than the Godzillas

The Belkor Experiment was good to me. Not nothing you need to run out to see and you can wait for Netflix or the download, but it is enjoyable.

Thanks for the recent updates, all. Side note for the tv heads - new seasons of Better Call Saul and Fargo are returning in April. Both series are delivering and have had good BGOL discussion threads for 'em respectively. Good underdogs and villains in Fargo. And the Breaking Bad heads will get a kick out of the Saul Goodman backstory and of course other peeps from the BB world. No spoilers from me.

Some lower key movies

Snowden was a lot better than I thought it would be

Miss Sloane was pretty good too. I think some of the bad reviews it's gotten are from the right.

Arrival was just ok to me. I wanted to like it more than I did.

Yeah just watched Miss sloane..really enjoyed it..loved the twists and turns. Chick was a chessmaster..good performance by jessica Chastain, also nice seeing Gugu Mbatha Raw and a few actors from "the newsroom"

LIFE

The latest horror in space film to hit the big screen is titled L I F E and its actually pretty good.
It's the story of a six-member crew aboard the International Space Station studying rocks from Mars and discover a life form exists within the rocks. This discovery is welcomed by all aboard and the world until the life form becomes hostile and the fun and chaos begins.

Even though i found some of the character development to be a bit slight,i was pulled into the fates of the characters as the suspense is pushed to high levels with enough visuals and thrilling moments to keep me engaged.

The movie does borrow from other films in it's genre bracket and falls into some some cliched black holes but its very entertaining and has one of those endings that made me smile and wonder could more branch off from this story.

POWER RANGERS

I was never a super fan of the Power Rangers.Through my brothers and son's love for the series and watching episodes here and there with them i could definitely see that this 2017 big screen version of the long running TV series, gets a lot of things right
Fortunately there is some good character development for the five leads Dacre Montgomery as Jason Scott / Red Ranger, the leader of the Power Rangers.
Naomi Scott as Kimberly Hart / Pink Ranger
RJ Cyler as Billy Cranston / Blue Ranger,
Becky G as Trini Kwan / Yellow Ranger
Ludi Lin as Zack Taylor / Black Ranger
Al with their different personal problems and motivations ,even though some are less involving than others.
The plot is set up nicely with a good turn by the great Bryan Cranston as the voice and motion capture of Zordon
Characters that i thought would be obnoxious and grating actually become the most watrchable.
The action sequences are good providing a mixed bag of visual styles
There is some cheesiness to the film and over acting from Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa, but as a whole the film is fun
There will likely be a few more PR films and it will be interesting to see where the Power Rangers GO from here.

Had a chance to see The Zookeeper's Wife a few days back. Rate it a 7 or 7.5/10 or so. Did a good job contrasting the good & bad in humanity/humankind. The real-life animals (and CGI additions) were at least more believable than the deer & tiger in the most recent season of The Walking Dead. Movie has a PG-13 rating though, so that doesn't allow for the chaos, intensity, sadness, coarse language and violence we're used to in many other R-rated war-time flicks over the years. Recognized Jessica Chastain as one of the leads, but not too familiar with the other talent in the film.

THE PROMISE

A love triangle develops between a medical student named Mikael (Oscar Isaac),an American reporter for the Associated Press, Chris Myers (Christian Bale) and Ana(Charlotte Le Bon), an Armenian woman raised in Paris before and during The Armenian genocide in 1915 which was the systematic extermination of 1.5 million Armenians

Strong performances by the entire cast helps the film get around the hurdles of some clunky dialogue in the film's screenplay.I did feel the film was a bit manipulative as the genocide plays out on the big screen and the characters are constantly in peril.
This film is not perfect by any means but most of it i found powerful and it was an eye opening history lesson for me,and i believe it deserves to be seen on the big screen

Scale of 1-10 an 8

FREE FIRE

A gun deals go bad between buyers and sellers in the shoot em up Free Fire.
The film plays out more as a comedy than a drama as the individual personalities ,insult each other in salty ways, and a world is to small moment leads to an epic gun battle in the warehouse in which they converged.

The action is jumbled at times, and at times i couldnt tell who was shooting who and how on earth some avoided not being instantly killed. The cast which includes: Brie Larson,Sharlto Copley,Armie Hammer,Cillian Murphy,Jack Reynor,Babou Ceesay,Enzo Cilenti,Sam Riley,Michael Smiley and Noah Taylor are all on point and look like they are having a good time for the most part

The film starts to become a bit repetitive and i honestly didnt really care about the fate of the characters but this was still a fun action romp.

Unforgettable

Im shocked boring, uneventful shlock like this still makes it into a movie theatre. This clunker should have went straight to DVD or Netflix.Katherine Heigl and Rosario Dawson look stunning in the film and do their best with the beyond weak script.
Sure flicks like this are supposed to be trashy with epic showdowns between still obssesed ex's and such but thats' not even fleshed out or provided.
Cheryl Ladd has a good small turn as Heigl's cold mother.
Avoid this drivel at all costs !!!!!!!!

Sleight

Sleight may borrow a bit from the films Iron Man and Fresh but other than that its 95 percent original

Bo has suffered some tragedies in his life but he does well as a street 'magician' and drug runner as he cares for his younger sister and starts a relationship with a young lady named Holly who comes with her own set of personal problems
But when his drug kingpin boss wants him to get into more sinister actions trouble starts to arise

I was completely pulled in by the plight of the main character, and really admired the originality of the film, and the screenplay is quite involving
There are a couple of plot holes and clunky moments but aside from that the main cast which includes Jacob Latimore,Seychelle Gabriel,Sasheer Zamata,Storm Reid,Cameron Esposito
and Dulé Hill

This is a film so worthy of a large audience and box office support,so if you cant catch it in the theatre please support it when it hits the DVD shelves.

The Circle

Imagine an ultimate version of Google or Facebook,in which every aspect of your life was filmed and logged
Such is the case in the film The Circle
Mae Holland (Emma Watson) can't wait to work for them and is overjoyed when she starts working for them
There are many fringe benefits and they even help her family particularly her father (Bill Paxton in his final film role) who is suffering from multiple sclerosis
Her boss and CEO of The Circle Eamon Bailey, seems to be the best boss ever and gracious as he offers up amazing tech advances for low prices but is something sinister laying beneath it all?

I loved the first half of the movie Hanks was charming as ever I actually got excited about some of the tech he offered up in the film and there are great scenes about how much Chloe has to give over of her life to her new job
Definitely a reflection of how so many people give up so much information about their lives in various social media networks

Then the film runs out of steam,i started losing interest fast as the film gets bogged down by Chloe trying to find out what's going on with the Circle and how far reaching the company really is

Laced with some bad acting, characters only showing up briefly, and no big pay off The Circle's latter half disappoints

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL.2

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL.2 is a big SFX extravaganza coupled with a surprisingly moving story, that goes to dark levels at times and its also laced with a lot of humor.
The Guardians on a mission for Ayesha, leader of the Sovereign race end up crashing on a nearby planet and right to Ego
who claims to be Star Lord's father.

This movie was a lot of fun. There are some dramatic turns particularly from Michael Rooker as Yondu Udonta.
There is a great familial theme that runs throughout the film, family members may not always get along ,people considered family may not be
actual blood relatives but they are always there for you when it counts the most.
The entire cast does a great job as their characters with their various quirks and mannerisms, and some having no filter at all.

The only times i felt the film stalled was when a dramatic moment was happening it was as if someone said,oh throw in a couple of jokes, instead of letting the scene flow and effect the audience.

Loved everything else about the movie, from the cameos and multiple end credit scenes.

A very good further path to the cosmic characters of the Marvel Universe

THE DINNER

When i heard bits and pieces about this movie a month ago i thought it would possibly be based on the stage play Carnage
It does have humor but this film is much darker than the aforementioned

2 couples get together at one of those high end restaurants in which it takes 3 months to get a table to discuss a horrible incident their children were involved in.
The screenplay by writer/Director Oren Moverman is sharp and all of the actors Richard Gere,Steve Coogan,Laura Linney Lohman, and
Rebecca Hall bring their A game to the table but providing stand out moments are Coogan who's character is irritated and disgusted by well...everything,and Linney who's character is a chameleon and then some.

The film loses some points when it chooses to have overlapping dialogue and sounds that were beyond annoying plus some back story moments that play out in a drawn out and grating manner.
It's still very watchable just not outstanding as a whole.

THE WALL

A soldier pinned down by a sniper after investigating the deaths of contractors building a pipeline in Iraq is the story in THE WALL.
Mainly a one man show by Aaron Taylor-Johnson but also has a good brief performance from John Cena TW offers all the right tension and edge of your seat entertainment
There are a couple of to convenient moments laced into the films 81 minutes but its a heavily entertaining film that leads to a gut punch of and ending.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword

I missed the mysticism that is part of the King Arthur legend.
2004's King Arthur was lukewarm at best and 1995's First Knight definitely captured the passion of King Arthur but where was the magic and the wonder?
One of the good things about King Arthur: Legend of the Sword it brings all of the aforementioned back.
This version features a snarky Arthur portrayed by Charlie Hunnam who is reluctant at first to claim his birthright as King and unthrone his sinister uncle Vortigern (Jude Law)
Director Guy Ritchie's style works well with the medieval story for the most part. Most of the cast does a fine job.

The film does feel rushed at times.
Ritchie doesnt give the audience the chance to take in all the creatures and characters in the film.Sequences are so rushed it actually annoyed me.
The CGI was a bit off at times and the climax mainly looked like a video game.
King Arthur: Legend of the Sword is far from the B.S disaster some are calling it.With some tweaking here and there in all of it's rousing grandness it could have been great.

SNATCHED

This everything goes wrong on a foreign vacation comedy stays on a funny course for the most of it's running time as Mother and daughter (Goldie Hawn and Amy Schumer) embark on their trip that turns disatorous after a short while.
Hawn and Schumer work fine together getting some good laughs here and there but its mainly the side characters
Ike Barinholtz as a man child and Christopher Meloni as a Indiana Jones wannabe that steal the show
The movie stalls at times and goes down some odd paths but definitely worth watching.
