Dakota Johnson and Adam Scott Are Ensnared in Sony’s Madame Web
By Zoe Guy

Another day, another Sony-Marvel property catches actors in its web. Today’s IP in question is Madame Web, a movie about the titular character who appears in the Spider-Man comics. Directed by S.J. Clarkson with a screenplay by Morbius’s Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, the latest entry to Sony’s universe of Marvel comic adaptations is the first with a female lead. The movie is still in early development with no set release date, but its intriguing casting decisions have us wondering if the “allegedly locking people in a Blue Bottle Coffee” thing was a Madame Web Method acting exercise. While the answer may be elusive, here’s all the casting, plot, and release information we do know so far. Get caught in the web.

Who is Madame Web, anyway?
Madame Web is a supporting character in the Spider-Man comics. In 2019, Marvel wrote a handy-dandy article titled “Caught in Spidey’s Web: 5 Things to Know About Madame Web,” where the company tells the un-indoctrinated about the superperson. According to the site, Madame Web’s government name is Cassandra Webb; she is a blind, clairvoyant elderly woman suffering from a chronic neuromuscular disease that makes moving and breathing tough. She also advises Peter Parker, a.k.a. Spider-Man, whenever the young hero needs guidance and even knows Parker’s true identity. Seated in a web-shaped chair that doubles as a life-support machine, she uses her psychic powers to fight crime.

Do we know the plot of the movie?
No, we don’t! What we do know is there will be no Marvel Cinematic Universe tie-ins for Madame Web for now, Collider reports. While we don’t have any other details at this moment, Hollywood doesn’t often go with elderly leads, so we’re guessing it’s made the ageist decision to depict the young Cassandra. Collider also speculates that Madame Web is sort of like the MCU’s Doctor Strange, holding the key to the multiverse through her psychic abilities. Hopefully, this looks more like Everything Everywhere All at Once and not Multiverse of Madness. With a script from the Morbius writers, though, all bets are off. What we do know is the setting. Boston.com reported that the film crew turned Boston’s Financial District into an early-aughts NYC for the film. If this movie is set then, we look forward to the prospect of Adam Scott in Juicy Couture.

Who’s all in it?
It’s a grab bag of young Hollywood stars, people who may be responsible for ending Ellen DeGeneres’s run on the Ellen show, and the character from Euphoria voted most likely to get her ass beat by Maddy. Dakota Johnson of The Lost Daughter and Fifty Shades of Grey leads the cast as Madame Web, while Sydney Sweeney and Scream QueensEmma Roberts co-star. Adam Scott, with a shiny new Emmy nomination in tow, is reportedly also joining the cast, according to Deadline, though Sony has yet to comment on his potential casting. Selah and the Spades standout Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, and Tahar Rahim round out the cast.

Exclusive: Sony Taps 'Morbius' Writers for 'Madame Web' Movie Set in Spider-Man Universe
BYJEFF SNEIDER
PUBLISHED SEP 26, 2019
Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless will write a script about the clairvoyant character, who made her Marvel debut in 1980.
Sony Pictures has tapped Morbius scribes Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless to write a Madame Web movie set in the Spider-Man universe, Collider has exclusively learned.
Created by writer Denny O'Neil and artist John Romita Jr., Madame Web first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #210, which was published by Marvel Comics in November 1980. Known as Cassandra Webb, she is usually depicted as an elderly blind woman suffering from a chronic neuromuscular disease that makes it difficult to move and breathe, and as such, she's connected to a life support system that looks like a spider web. The clairvoyant character has precognitive abilities and once helped Spider-Man find a kidnap victim.

It's unclear who will produce the Madame Web movie, but Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are likely candidates, seeing as they served as producers on Venom and Morbius. A representative for declined to comment on Thursday.

In addition to the Marvel comics, Madame Web has also appeared in the Spider-Man animated series, as well as multiple Spider-Man video games. I'm not familiar with the character in the comics, but one Marvel expert likened her to the Oracle in the Matrix movies and explained that she holds the key to a shared multiverse, so the development of a Madame Web movie may signal where Sony is looking to take the Spider-Man franchise next, since as of right now, the character will have no future ties to Disney's MCU.
Sazama and Sharpless wrote the upcoming Sony movie Morbius, which stars Jared Leto as the titular vampire and is based on the Marvel comic by Gil Kane and Roy Thomas. Matt Smith, Tyrese Gibson and Jared Harris co-star in the film, which Sony will release on July 31, 2020. The duo's earlier writing credits include Dracula Untold, The Last Witch Hunter and Gods of Egypt, and they also received story credit on the most recent Power Rangers movie. They're also the driving creative forces behind Netflix's reboot of Lost in Space.

Sharpless and Sazama are represented by ICM Partners, Artists House and attorney Mitch Smelkinson.

Dear Sony,

Please stop making Spiderman movies without a Spiderman. At least tap Tobi or Andrew and continue these characters in their universe.

Personally, I think the superhero market is already overcrowded and doing 3 separate Spiderman universes at once is a terrible idea.

But that would still be better than another Spiderman-less Spidey character spin-off movie.

P.S. You hired the same people who wrote Moribus to come back and write this. :smh:
Did y'all not consider hiring a hit man to take those people out for good.

They still havent entertained the notion of bringing Miles Morales into live-action for the Sony Spiderverse..:smh:
The best thing Miles has going for him is that his universe is still animated. You can do all kinds of things in the animated realm that still don't quite work out in live action.

Out of the 3 currently running Spidy-verses I like Miles animated one the most. The MCU verse seems determined to give Tom Holland a father figure so those movies keep doing stupid shit with Tony and Dr. Strange.

And the Sony-live action verse has Vemon, a Moribus, a Madam Web, about 3 or 4 teenaged looking Spider-women, and not one single damn Spiderman in sight.

soooo whack.... I'm the dorkiest nerd of em all NO WAY anyone will Ever GAF about M. Web....Folks looking desperate and dumb out here Wich such a rich tapestry of stories to draw from it is Insane!
