XCLUSIVE: After years of trying, Warner Bros finally has found a way to extend its hit Will Smith last-man-on-Earth blockbuster I Am Legend into a potential new franchise. The studio is working on a reboot that isn’t meant to star Smith, who has been reluctant to do sequels and so far has avoided a reprise in Independence Day 2. Warner is retrofitting A Garden At The End Of The World, a spec script that the studio bought back in April from Gary Graham, who was working at the Apple store in midtown Manhattan when he posted his script on the Black List website and got the attention of CAA and manager Brooklyn Weaver. They signed him and sent his script out. Amid several bids, Warner Bros acquired what was described as a sci-fi version of John Wayne’s The Searchers. When Graham was brought in to rewrite his script, the studio by then had talked to the I Am Legend producers and noted enough similarities to the themes and mythology of that film that they asked the scribe to consider a redraft to fit that property.

Original I Am Legend producers Akiva Goldsman of Weed Road, Overbrook’s James Lassiter and Safehouse Pictures’ Joby Harold are on board to produce, along with Vertigo’s Roy Lee, and Weaver. The studio made a previous attempt to prequelize Legend, hiring Arash Amel to write a script that would have brought Smith’s Robert Neville scientist character back, right before the calamitous events that left him alone on the planet. They just couldn’t figure it out and scrapped the attempt. The 2007 original grossed $586 million worldwide, $256 million of it domestic.

This would not be the first time that a free-standing script was retrofitted to extend a franchise. The Jonathan Hensleigh script Simon Says was turned into Die Hard With A Vengeance; George Nolfi’s script Honor Among Thieves became the basis for Ocean’s Twelve and most recently, Adam Cozad’s Dubai into the Jack Ryan reboot. As for Graham, he is now a long way from selling iPhones and is making a solid living as a New York-based screenwriter. CAA and Weaver still rep Graham, along with lawyer Jeff Frankel. WB’s Andy Fischel is overseeing this. Jonathan Krauss and Ian Puente, who were very involved when this project was sold as an original, will be exec producers.

doesn't need to be done yet....Are these fucker out of original ideas already?

The film business is based on re-telling the same stories every few years. Plus studios are not going to turn down a chance to create a franchise.

Will Smith needs to sign up for more thought-provoking films i.e. Seven Pounds, Pursuit of Happyness. I'd like to see him really shoot for an Oscar

I'l say this...

the alternate ending so completely improved on and changed the entire tone of the original film that I could see someone wanting to do this over.

In Hollywood, original ideas die of loneliness.

I was also told after 911, before the war, no one was going to be producing ANYTHING they were not sure they can make their money back from.

Hence the era of Public Domain movies.

Fuck dis movie... it was the second time when Will did it.. guess 3rd times a charm huh...

good, this movie needed a part deux

Yup I want to see if the cure is a cure for all of the infected and if really heals them fully. The infected seemed to be in a state of social clans with a definite pecking order. They seemed to not want a cure or anything to do with uninfected humans in some ways even though they appeared to be limited intellectually at first. I know sunlight played a big part but the movie just had me wondering what would happen next........

the reboot probably won't beat those numbers. usually a reboot will have a lesser none star. But you know what, funny if the reboot star would be .....

.... you think Will won't be pushing for that.

thing is that if this isnt following up from the Will Smith film theyll have to rediscover the cure all over again..

in the original book they were vampires and they were the next step in evolution...the dude was last of human beings as we know them..

if they do reboot the story it would be nice to mix it up with a female as the lone human hero role. And make the "infected" more intelligent.

I am Legend was already the third remake of the movie. I don't mind. I thought the ending sucked in the theatrical release.

Hey Warner Bros, you do realize that you owe every one of these characters right ?!?!?!

You have plenty of shit you can/should be making a movie of, that would be better then trying to reboot I Am Legend.
