Steven Spielberg Thinks Netflix Films Are Nothing More Than TV Movies That Don’t Deserve Oscars
In recent years, Netflix has found a decent amount of success by diversifying and expanding its original film slate, with some outings, such as Dee Rees’ Mudbound and Ava DuVernay’s documentary 13th, going so far as to receive nominations at the Academy Awards. (Icarcus even picked up Best Documentary this year.)

It’s been well documented how Academy voters are incredibly divisive whether Netflix, a streaming giant primarily catering to television viewers, should be submitting films for Oscars consideration, and they may have found their new celebrity spokesperson: Steven Spielberg.

Because, surprise, he really dislikes Netflix gunnin’ for that awards season hardware.

“Once you commit to a television format, you’re a TV movie. You certainly, if it’s a good show, deserve an Emmy, but not an Oscar,” Spielberg said in an ITV News interview. “I don’t believe films that are just given token qualifications in a couple of theaters for less than a week should qualify for the Academy Award nomination.”

Interestingly, Spielberg isn’t the first prolific director to challenge Netflix for the way it approaches awards season. Christopher Nolan previously said Netflix’s streaming and theatrical film release strategy was “bizarre” and “mindless,” although he later apologized to Netflix’s chief content officer, Ted Sarandos, for his “undiplomatic” stance. Care to weigh in, Quentin Tarantino or Wes Anderson? Maybe?

He has a point with how it does but not a point about the caliber of film.
The problem is the rules of the Oscar Committee's they need to update the criteria.
I agree if you say well you put Mudbound in 3 theaters for 1 weekend strictly so it can qualify for the Oscar's is a load of crap
I don't agree with the notion of a Movie with an actual Motion Picture budget and production that is not a mini series or cable tv movie not being qualified to be an Oscar
it's a fine line because Neflix is just more than 1 thing. It's a "Network" but it's also a "Studio" ... no different than the other studios who produce "Network" and "Studio" motion pictures.

They gotta say that shit. Studios spend an excessive amount of money on shitty films in it's circle of inclusion. The last thing they need is too acknowledge something else with a better more consumer friendly business model producing better content especially when it comes to lower budget films.

Thing is, Netflix isn't even low budget
They bout to spend $5billion dollars on content..

sounds like he's talking more on the money side more than the actual art side, Netflix movie wins an oscar then its game over for theaters

It's already close but this again only affects the SHITTY MOVIES.
Black Panther just set records in 36 days because it was a SHITTY MOVIE
what happened is they stopped sending these movies straight to dvd like they should have and try to squeeze blood from a turnip
Like Death Wish would've been a GREAT netflix movie
but you try and put it out in the theaters and lol. I haven't seen Death Wish with bruce willis either. Might have been tempted to watch it on Netflix

Its a nig with a 5 star restaurant getting mad that the food truck on the corner getting way more bizzness and making more money than them and people liking the food truck food more than the 5 star joint... I told ya secretly Hollywood has animosity and hatred towards any options besides them.. Netflix is Jus's 1 of the many other platforms that provide content without following Hollywood rules.. Big bizz hate competition and hate mom and pop type bizzness.. Netflix is the mom and pop shop that became huge and an alternative to big bizz... The rise of the independent is growing and slowly Hollywood is revealing their true feelings about alternative sources...his rant reeks of animosity towards an outside option other than Hollywood

My bad. I should, have expanded on what I was thinking. The movies that tend to get Oscar nods are those films that have that have a certain look to them. Those movies where money is spent on them but it's not like summer blockbuster stuff. Just enough to create an atmosphere. Normally those period piece films where there are no minorities, or minorities are in bad conditions. The shit that's romanticized by Hollywood. If a studio can get in on that, they can easily be in consideration to be praised.

I know that Netflix is spending a grip on it's overall content. Hollywood's fucked up inner workings can't afford to have an alternative to their infrastructure. There's a difference in spending what's necessary to make a film and studios doing whatever it takes to run up the bill and not even breaking even.

which they wouldn't have to worry about if they actually made good content lol

how often has the Oscars made themselves look foolish by giving oscars to films that didn't deserve it. manchester by the sea/casey affleck (i fell asleep and never finished watching this. Fences/Denzel was better. So many more examples. what did Spielberg say about all that. he got a minor point. like spielberg but he tripping. this a new day. i wish BET would learn game from netflix (the movie production side not the streaming side).

Also Hollywood fucked themselves. There Greed is what killed them. They use to supply Netflix with content. Back in the days Netflix had a lot of movies. But studios wanted Netflix to raise there subscription prices so they can charge more license fees and Netflix refused so they started pullling most of there content. Netflix said fuck it and started producing there own content. The rest was history. Now Hollywood is mad

Isn't that how the short animation and documentary categories work? They release them to a couple of theaters (in a short time period) strictly for Oscar consideration. They rarely get wide releases. How many people saw Kobe's Dear Basketball in the theater?

... Give him some time and he'll fall in rank. Just like Samuel L Jackson didn't think that rappers should be actors and then he makes a movie with a rapper... times Change but people have the hardest time changing.

Exactly
But those don't threaten major animation films the way these threaten regular ones

The thing lost is quality
Stop putting out trash and you don't have to worry about that

You think Pixar is worried about Kobe short? No because they know they're not just putting out bullshit and the movie that they make will do great because of quality

Netflix is his comp so he's gonna be anti them.. He represents Hollywood elite and Netflix threatens their existence so of course he's gonna say negative things about them or try to keep them from progressing

That’s a very interesting analogy

bullshit...just old Hollywood losing their shit on how entertainment is disseminated.

as long as a flick gets a theatrical release it should be eligible.

a lot of these Oscar no one ever sees in theatres anyway. the academy votes based on screeners. at least real ppl see the Netflix joints

I saw death wish with MoviePass... And I paid for a ticket for Black Panther so death with got no credit. It wasn't a bad movie though, but I agree it would have been a really good Netflix movie

Toronto International Film Festival Screening Venue Refuses to Show Netflix or Amazon Films
By Halle Kiefer@hallekiefer

Attendees at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival might not have noticed an odd discrepancy as they sprinted from film to film, but in a festival lineup packed with Netflix and Amazon offerings, eventually moviegoers were bound to notice: One of TIFF’s official screening venues is refusing to show movies released by streaming platforms. Even movies that have or will have brief in-theater runs do not make the cut for Cineplex, which owns Toronto’s Scotiabank Theatre, currently playing movies for the festival.

“There are hundreds of fantastic films screening as part of this year’s festival, and with all those options, we asked that our screens feature titles from studios who understand and appreciate the importance of the theatrical release model,” Cineplex spokesperson Sarah Van Lange explained to The Hollywood Reporter. “We have a strong and longstanding partnership with TIFF and are proud of our role in creating memorable theatrical experiences for festivalgoers, now and for years to come.” Ellis Jacob, CEO of Cineplex, is on the board of the Toronto International Film Festival, and his company is one of the festival sponsors.

Festival organizers also confirmed the policy, which is new this year. “Cineplex has been a great partner of TIFF’s for many years,” they acknowledged in a statement. “This year, new restrictions were put in place on our use of their Scotiabank Theatres during the festival. As a result, TIFF scheduled films that do not comply with their traditional theatrical windows in other venues.” Among the Netflix films premiering at TIFF are Dolemite Is My Name, Marriage Story, The Two Popes, and The Laundromat, while Amazon is debuting Les Miserables, Honey Boy, The Report, and The Aeronauts, among others.

Fuck him. What I really want to know is where his daughter Mikaela is. She disappeared off the face of the earth. Her movies were more interesting than his more recent work.
