London (CNN Business)Cineworld Group, the owner of Regal Cinemas, will begin reopening movie theaters next week following a three-month shutdown due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The company said in a statement Tuesday that it was planning to open all its theaters by July 10, with screenings of "Mulan," "Wonder Woman 1984" and director Christopher Nolan's new film "Tenet" on the upcoming slate.
AMC plans to reopen its theaters in July
Shares in the company gained as much as 8% in London.
Cineworld (CNK) became the second largest cinema business in the world by number of screens after it acquired Regal in 2017 for $3.6 billion. It closed all 787 of its cinemas in 10 countries in the middle of March, when governments around the world introduced social distancing rules that shut restaurants, bars and theaters.

"We are thrilled to be back and encouraged by recent surveys that show that many people have missed going to the movie theater," CEO Mooky Greidinger said in a statement. The company has deferred salaries for its directors, suspended quarterly dividend payments, and said last month that it was seeking $180 million from banks and government support programs to conserve cash and remain a viable business.

"Amidst the ongoing Covid-19 crisis, Cineworld's main priority remains the health and well-being of both our customers and colleagues," the company said. It said it has updated its booking system to ensure social distancing throughout auditoriums, adapted daily screening schedules to avoid crowds and enhanced cleaning procedures.

AMC Theaters (AMC), the world's largest movie theater owner, is planning to open around 1,000 cinemas around the world next month. The company reported a net loss of $2.2 billion in its first quarter and said there were "substantial doubts" about its ability to keep operating if pandemic-related closures continued.
Cineworld said its scheduled opening dates were "subject to final clarifications and confirmation in relation to various government Covid-19 restrictions in certain territories."
In the United Kingdom, the government is reviewing whether to reduce its social distancing rule from two meters. A reduction would help bars, restaurants and theaters to make money upon reopening.
Cineworld provided the following opening dates:
  • Unites States: July 10
  • United Kingdom: July 10
  • Poland: July 3
  • Czech Republic: June 26
  • Slovakia: June 26
  • Israel: July 9
  • Bulgaria: July 3
  • Hungary and Romania: to be confirmed (anticipated for week of July 3)

Regal Reopening Begins July 10
New Safety and Health Procedures at all Regal Theatres
Regal announces plans for the reopening of theatres starting Friday, July 10. Reopening plans include a wide range of new health and safety measures based on guidelines provided from the CDC and other public health organizations. The plan also includes safety measures based on feedback received from employees and moviegoers they have deemed most important for their return. Regal will also provide new contactless payment options and innovative sanitizing methods including:
  • Contactless payment. Along with the ability to purchase tickets in advance on the Regal mobile app, guests will now have the ability to purchase concession items from the app.
  • ULV Foggers. Employees will sanitize every auditorium and seat after each movie using new electrostatic ‘fogger’ equipment. This form of deep sanitization is highly effective in disinfecting all materials with a non-toxic formula that is fast drying.
Along with the above procedures, each theatre will sanitize high-contact points on an increased schedule and use floor markers throughout the building to assist with social distancing. Additionally, the following safety measures that cover the entire moviegoing experience will be implemented, providing a safe venue for employees and guests:
REGAL EMPLOYEES
  • Regal employees will undergo daily health screenings including temperature checks where mandated.
  • Employees will be required to wash hands at minimum every 30 to 60 minutes, dependent on job role.
  • Where required by local governance, all employees and guests will wear masks.
THE LOBBY
  • Greeters will be located in the lobby to assist guests with new procedural changes.
  • Guests will be encouraged to proceed to their auditorium as soon as possible, and exit the theatre in a timely manner at the conclusion of their movie
  • Wall mounted sanitizer dispensers will be available on either side of the main entrance.
  • Arcade games and vending machines will remain closed. Additionally, water fountains will not be available for use.
THE CONCESSION STAND
  • Every other register will be closed to maintain social distancing.
  • A reduced menu offering will be temporarily available
  • Self-service condiment stands will be closed.
  • Refills on large drinks and popcorn will be suspended.
  • Locations featuring diners, restaurants and in-theatre ordering will have these services temporarily suspended.
  • Locations with bars will remain open for walk-up service only.
THE AUDITORIUM
  • Where required by state or county mandate, auditorium capacities will be reduced to 50%.
  • Our reservation system will maintain two empty seats between groups (1 seat at recliner locations) to maintain proper social distancing throughout the movie.
  • At theatres where performances are non-reserved, you will be requested to leave two seats between groups.
  • Group sizes will only be limited where required by a state or county mandate.

Regal Cinemas Sets Reopening Date with New Coronavirus Safety Guidelines

Regal Cinemas is the latest theater chain to set a reopening date as this corner of the industry weathers hard financial hits amidst the coronavirus pandemic. Regal’s owner, Cineworld, is behind the reopening date decision and plans to reopen theaters in the UK, too. Potential return moviegoers will also be pleased to know that, unlike the Cinemark chain, there will be plenty of new health and safety guidelines in place to protect patrons from potential coronavirus exposure.
Per The Wrap, Cineworld will reopen Regal Cinemas‘ 546 U.S. locations on Friday, July 10. This wave of reopenings will happen alongside UK reopenings, and after Cineworld theaters in Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Poland open in late June. New guidelines on how to protect theatergoers from coronavirus exposure or spread have been shared on Regal’s official site. Highlights in the new set of guidelines include: Contactless payment will be utilized in addition to purchasing tickets on the Regal mobile app; employees will sanitize all auditorium after each movie using new electrostatic ‘fogger’ equipment, also known as “ULV Foggers”; all Regal employees will undergo daily health screenings; auditorium capacities will be reduced to just 50% with a minimum of 2 seats between groups; and, finally, employees and patrons will be required to wear masks in locations where this rule is in effect by local governance.

In a statement on theater reopenings during these otherwise grim times, Cineworld CEO Mooky Greidinger commented,

“We are thrilled to be back and encouraged by recent surveys that show that many people have missed going to the movie theatre. With a strong slate confirmed for the coming weeks, including among others Tenet, Mulan, A Quiet Place Part II, Wonder Woman 1984, Black Widow, [No Time to Die], Soul, Top Gun: Maverick, and many more, the entire Cineworld team remains committed to being ‘the best place to watch a movie.”
I admire Cineworld’s optimism ahead of this reopening plan, but it feel difficult to get excited about this. Just how much fun will a communal experience like going to a blockbuster movie during the peak summer months be during this time? Even with all of these measures in place? Sure, the new health and safety guidelines in place are comforting; how well they will be followed at every location is another matter entirely. Is it worth the risk amidst this pandemic to go out to a theater to see something like Tenet or Wonder Woman 1984? Is it worth spending the precious dollars which could be needed elsewhere for this kind of experience? The jury is still out, but frankly I don’t think it’s looking good.

To be honest, most of the movie summer, fall and winter releases all look like ass
I wouldnt mind seeing Quiet Place 2 and maybe Coming to America 2
but rest of the releases, MEH

Wait? Jordan Peele made a Candyman movie:confused:

So you get less of a good experience for the same or more money.

Picture going to movie date night and being required to wear masks.

No refills.

And they herd you in and out of the theater like the cattle you are to them.

Better experience at home

they should probably bring back drive-ins...and only show movies there for a while...

Are they going to enforce mask wearing and social distancing? I got $300 in iPic gift cards that's going to just sit.

Guess there will be no more adding your own butter or "popcorn shake"..

Mulan comes out in July and so does Tenent

A lot of late summer releases have kept their dates
Beside these two most releases will be in the movie theater and streaming the same day, sucks we only have 5 Regal theaters here. Any word on the AMC vs Universal war

Big movies aren't going to streaming

Most things were pushed back past September

That's one movie. A movie that probably wouldn't have been able to get $70 million dollars during the summer schedule.

Those are far from blockbuster movies.
