Which is the best (or your favorite) R&B music from the 60's early 70's?

In the 1960s, Motown and its subsidiary labels (including Tamla Motown, the brand used outside the US) were the most successful proponents of what came to be known as the Motown Sound, a style of soul music with a distinct pop influence. During the 1960s, Motown achieved spectacular success for a small record company: 79 records in the Top Ten of the Billboard Hot 100 record chart between 1960 and 1969.

Stax Records is an American record label, originally based in Memphis, Tennessee.
Founded in 1957 as Satellite Records, the label changed its name to Stax Records in 1961. It was a major factor in the creation of the Southern soul and Memphis soul music styles, also releasing gospel, funk, jazz, and blues recordings. It featured several popular ethnically-integrated bands, including the label's house band, Booker T. & the M.G.'s, and a racially integrated team of staff and artists unheard of in that time of racial strife and tension in Memphis and the South.

Philadelphia (or Philly) soul, sometimes called the Philadelphia sound or Sweet Philly, is a genre of soul music characterized by funk influences and lush instrumental arrangements, often featuring sweeping strings and piercing horns. The subtle sound of a vibraphone can often be heard in the background of Philly soul songs. The genre laid the groundwork for disco and what are now considered quiet storm and smooth jazz by fusing the R&B rhythm sections of the 1960s with the pop vocal tradition, and featuring a slightly more pronounced jazz influence in its melodic structures and arrangements.

A most difficult question....

Early in my life, the answer would have quickly been Motown...then there was a time I was really into Harold Melvin,Billy Paul,Dexter Wansel and so on.

Memphis/Stax...Al Green,David Porter....one of my all time favorite albums,Victim of the Joke...but,not the sheer numbers of the other two.

Slight edge to Motown...over Philly....I guess.

Anyplace with William Smokey Robinson as de-facto writer in charge had to be special:cool:

i'm going to be partial to stax when it comes to pure soul

motown did numbers the sheer volume of songs that came out of there was staggering

infighting and corruption kept stax from becoming what it should have been.

that.... and the plane crash that killed otis redding (and the original bar-kays) right when Stax was on the verge on really blowing up

Otis was already dead when dock of the bay came out

I can't choose, I love the music from all three. I grew up listening to their music. Each company and its groups had their own unique style something lacking today. I keep music from all three in rotation even today.

Philly for me. Motown was geared for transistor radios so it didn't really take advantage of the full stereo sound stage. Stax just not enough song writers. But all three had some FIERCE house bands and (very overlooked) STUDIOS.

I would like to know how you arrived at this conclusion that Motown's music was geared for transistor radios. Your basing your conclusion on what exactly?

Back then everyone's 45s sucked but the sound quality was there on all their LPs. I know this because I still play my vinyl even today.

This is an easy question to answer.

Motown had the most talented artists and helped to effect the most social change.

Motown ruled the 1960's to early 1970's.

Philly Soul caught up to Motown in the 1970's and in effect became the "Motown of the 1970's".

Stax had some consistent hits and artists, but never reached the level of either Motown or Philly International.

You cant go wrong wit either 3, I like them all equally cuz they all different and all jam, but for the sake of this thread I'll vote Gamble & Huff, Philly International Soul.

Man, I don't even want to pick one for fear of offending other two...I guess you could say Stax was not as big as the other two...Motown obviously had the most impact...but that Philly soul defined a decade...man, I aint picking one, fuck it
