Most Americans say tax rich to balance budget: poll

– Mon Jan 3, 10:59 am ET
NEW YORK (Reuters) – Most Americans think the United States should raise taxes for the rich to balance the budget, according to a 60 Minutes/Vanity Fair poll released on Monday.

President Barack Obama last month signed into law a two-year extension of Bush-era tax cuts for millions of Americans, including the wealthiest, in a compromise with Republicans.

Republicans, who this week take control of the House of Representatives, want to extend all Bush-era tax cuts "permanently" for the middle class and wealthier Americans. They are also demanding spending cuts to curb the $1.3 trillion deficit.

Sixty-one percent of Americans polled would rather see taxes for the wealthy increased as a first step to tackling the deficit, the poll showed.

The next most popular way -- chosen by 20 percent -- was to cut defense spending.

Four percent would cut the Medicare government health insurance program for the elderly, and 3 percent would cut the Social Security retirement program, the poll showed.

Asked which part of the world they would fix first, the largest proportion of respondents -- 36 percent -- chose Washington, compared with 23 percent who picked the Middle East and 14 percent who chose Haiti.

The poll included a random sample of 1,067 adults across the United States from November 29 to December 2. The margin of error may be plus or minus 3 percentage points, 60 Minutes/Vanity Fair said.

As republican David Stockman, the Director of the Office of Management and Budget under republican ‘faux-saint’ president Ronald Reagan, recently pointed out on the CBS program “60 Minutes” - he said:
<blockquote>
"In 1985, the top five percent of the households, the wealthiest five percent, had net worth of $8 trillion, which is a lot. Today, after serial bubble after serial bubble, the top five percent have net worth of $40 trillion," he explained. "The top five percent have gained more wealth than the whole human race had created prior to 1980."

The United States ridiculous military spending also must be cut if anyone is serious about reducing the debt. Why does the US need 650+ military bases in the 21st century?? POWER in the 21st century is NOT projected solely or even primarily via military power. The Chinese are lauging at us.

Be careful with the word most. Most people (47%) do not pay any federal income tax.

Thank you for posting this video, because I actually debated this concept with some Republican friends of mine. The problem with this video is it does not illustrate what happened during the Bush administration, and why taxes NEED to be raised

For example:

Lets say we followed the same story, except we increased the richest mans savings from 16% to 20%. That would mean he would get back $16 rather than $10 (yay! good for him!).

But now they are $6 short on the tab. The rich guy doesnt want to give up the $6, so instead they negotiate with the bartender to simply put the bill on their tab and they will pay for it later. Now lets say they do this EVERY DAY... FOR 6 FRIGGIN YEARS... :smh:

That my friend, is why taxes on the rich need to get raised (to pre-Bush levels). I also think the Bartender (US) should cut some expenses as well, so beer wouldnt be so expensive.

How about don't raise taxes on anyone? Open your eyes and see who is grossly overspending the money. Uncle Sam overspends all the while running the rich vs poor bit. Its pointless to rais taxes on anyone when the Gov't is made of irresponsible bitches who don't really care about spending within it's means because they can always hit us up for more money. Also, what is rich? Say we tax the "rich" more now what? If I was rich I would just not work. Rich people can afford to do that right? Just curious what the next move would be

Raise the Sales Tax by 1%...States could better balance their budgets, or create a national Sales Tax and break the states off a piece of it.

Most importantly, slash the military...and my son is a Marine. I've said that before that the Military is the only institution where they consume SOOOOO much capital and produce less than nothing for the effort.

The Powers above need to learn how to manage money. If they don't, it won't matter how much they take, because they are gonna blow it

Note that the bottom 50% pay almost no taxes, while the top 5% pay about 60% of the federal tax bill. I agree with one thing - this isn't fair. But I think it is the rich that are paying too much, only to be sneered at by those that pay nothing at all and get OUR money back from the government. It's now gotten so bad, so unfair, that the top 1% pay more in federal taxes than the bottom 95% (60 Minutes/Vanity Fair Poll: 50% of Americans that don't pay taxes thinks "rich" people ought to pay more, even though top 1% pay more than bottom 95%):

I think it's very fair. The top 1% are benefitting the most from the American system at every level while the bottom 50 benefit significantly less.

The only problem is a lot of the bottom level are getting money back when they haven't put in the system. I can understand not having to pay taxes if you are below a certain income but not getting money back when you haven't put into the system.

I spend, I recommend other people spend, zero energy even thinking about that. Those people are not people you or I (and being someone who gets a refund and takes advantage of every tax credit I have ever qualified, I might be or have been one of those people)would want to change places with for a few hundred or even thousand dollars. Whatever they get is still a drop in the bucket to what's given to major corporations who offshore jobs and ruin the environment.
