Mixed feelings on kids' health insurance

By Richard Wolf, USA TODAY
WASHINGTON — A majority of Americans trust Democrats to handle the issue of children's health insurance more than President Bush, but they agree with the president that government aid should be targeted to low-income families, a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll shows.

Two days before the Democratic-controlled House attempts to override Bush's veto of a five-year, $35 billion expansion of the State Children's Health Insurance Program, the poll shows that opinions on the issue are mixed.

Fifty-two percent of respondents say they have more confidence in Democrats to deal with the issue, compared with 32% for Bush.

Slim majorities back two positions at the core of the president's opposition to the expansion:

POLL RESULTS: Children's health insurance issue

52% agree with Bush that most benefits should go to children in families earning less than 200% of the federal poverty level — about $41,000 for a family of four. Only 40% say benefits should go to families earning up to $62,000, as the bill written by Democrats and some Republicans would allow.

55% are very or somewhat concerned that the program would create an incentive for families to drop private insurance. Bush and Republican opponents have called that a step toward government-run health care.

Taken together, the results show that while Bush may be losing the political battle with Democrats, he may be doing better on policy.

Mike Leavitt, Bush's secretary of Health and Human Services, said the policy is most important. "There's a lot of politics going on right now. But the politics will last a matter of weeks," Leavitt said Monday. "The policy here will go on for decades. We have to get this right."

I caught snippets before I put on my ipod so I didn't hear it. I got so much music from the Alberto post I'm killing my ipod batteries.

But if you are talking about this schip I can only go with what I said before. This isn't about schip but it's expansion. We already have systems in place we are already paying for that address this and it's called welfare.

The kid the democrats used to promote this expansion is from a family who pays to keep that same kid in private school to the tune of 20k plus a year.

The house they live in is in a neighborhood where houses are 400-500 thousand bucks.

The childs father owns the building he works in and bought it in 199x something for 190 thousand.

That kid claims he doesn't have health care without schip.

Now I ask you what's wrong with this picture?

BTW Makk, this Mac has me buzzin' man.

Yep... you're right.... I got some stuff off albertos thread too...

The bill that was vetoed gave states the option of expanding coverage well beyond the income limit of around 40,000. It can even go as high as $85,000. Keep in mind, this is federal money passed down to the state level .....and states will administer the program.

 ive seen them but I have so much music already I havent touched those yet

But if you are talking about this schip I can only go with what I said before. This isn't about schip but it's expansion.
Now its about expansion. A few months ago it was about all of schip until Bush couldnt pull that one. Now its about expansion but none of the people publicly bashin expansion are publicly criticizing war costs are they?
:hmm:

We already have systems in place we are already paying for that address this and it's called welfare.
Oh really? What welfare program pays for children's healthcare? That's not part of welfare. I think you're talking about medicaid which is not monetary aid welfare.

The kid the democrats used to promote this expansion is from a family who pays to keep that same kid in private school to the tune of 20k plus a year.

Not true- blame Rush Limbaugh or Fox for the lies

Their kids are smart and all receive FULL SCHOLARSHIPS TO THAT SCHOOL - their income is $45,000 per year and its a family of 6

The house they live in is in a neighborhood where houses are 400-500 thousand bucks.

They bought the house for $90,000 in the early 1990's. The value has increased with the housing market. They couldn't afford the house now if they had to buy it again. They make $45k a year.

Check your facts.

The childs father owns the building he works in and bought it in 199x something for 190 thousand.

That kid claims he doesn't have health care without schip.
Now I ask you what's wrong with this picture?

What's wrong with the picture is you have wrong information.

a family of 6 living on $45k is under the poverty line which is why their kids are eligible for healthcare they cant otherwise obtain

If healthcare costs were not kept high by the same politicians in the white house who do not want these kids to have insurance then the child in question parent's might not have to worry about obscene hospital bills.

The kid's claims are accurate - do you think he could have gotten insurance after the fact in the hospital? you think they could afford an independent medical policy on a family of 6???????

Go google the AP article with the real figures.

I know you are against big government in the first place but big government aka Bush and repub faggots created this problem.

BTW Makk, this Mac has me buzzin' man.

I think those facts were confirmed but let me double check those. The point about welfare was a blanket word to mean "public assistance." My fault there.

On the Mac thing man, I'm thinking about it. But it won't happen real soon unless I just get lucky. I want to run Leopard but from what I read around the net, I might not have the clock speed for it. But it runs Tiger really well.

All of a sudden the republicans care about polls. If you want to site polls, site Bush's popularity, the popularity of the Iraqi war and the polls that say the GOP will be run out of Washington in 2008!

The facts aren't wrong just out of context

Yes their house is worth 400k but they bought it in 1991 for 90k - they arent rich

yes their children's school costs 20k - but they all receive full scholarships

What I really dont get is why you guys fall into fighting the weakest members of society who are getting the smallest possible help from the government while many billions more are being spent to subsidize the wealthy and corporations.

Why are you going along with this shit to fight millions spent on the poorest children in America receiving healthcare when these same guys fighting this NEVER EVER EVER have put out the same effort to stop bailling out Airlines, or Farming, or any other corporate subsidy??????

If you really are just anti-big govt why cosign these frauds who pretend to want what you want?

Not a real big difference between tiger and leopard is there?

Thoughtone- man you could sit around all day and expose repub hypocrisy

Rich or not, it always comes down to choices we make.

What I really dont get is why you guys fall into fighting the weakest members of society who are getting the smallest possible help from the government while many billions more are being spent to subsidize the wealthy and corporations.

Two points here.

It's choices again man but this is apples and oranges. Two different types of support. For example if a company like Chrysler which employs millions were to go bankrupt, or an airline like Southwest did the same, would you, as a leader be in favor of allowing that much of the economy to die instantly causing who knows how many personal bankruptcies to occur all at once? Not to mention the effect that would have on those local economies. How that loss of tax revenue would reflect on the schools, the security of that community, local businesses in those towns that would be forced to close up shop.

Do you know how many working black people would be affected by your decision and how the creditors will view their situation you put them in as opposed to how creditors would view white people dealing with the exact same shit?

As a leader of the "free world" are you that short-sighted to make or support that kind of major decision? You do know who gets that bill when the states start crying out for help right? The federal government. Now how much do you pay?

And you're cool with that?

Second point. It's not an YOU GUYS thing Makk. If I don't like the way something goes down, how is it automatically a YOU GUYS thing? Do we all truly think alike? Like robots? Ignorant ones at that.

I know democrat bosses want to believe we as black voters do. Then when we don't, foot soldiers like the throughtone is sent in to insult those of us who they feel have got out of line. I've subsequently put on ignore, because his is the worse type of racial offender in my opinion. But that's neither here nor there.

Anyway Makk, the fact is we don't all think alike. Not because of party or wealth or status. But because we have a point of view. Some of us do ponder, reconcile, consider and make choices based on what we perceive to be reality like grown men supposed to do Makk. Yes, even black people think believe it or not.

Why are you going along with this shit to fight millions spent on the poorest children in America receiving healthcare when these same guys fighting this NEVER EVER EVER have put out the same effort to stop bailling out Airlines, or Farming, or any other corporate subsidy??????

Because man, like I said before, my reasons are I don't want the government to take more money from to me subsidize a condition we should do ourselves.

That's it. Nothing more.

They fuck up money when they get it. Not just this time everytime.

If they were serious about helping people, allow people to deduct the entire cost of that health care from their taxes. This way a man could be a man and pay to protect his own damn family from the sweat of his brow. The government won't even consider allowing me to do that, why? Why must they step into my fuckin' light and do my work??
If you really are just anti-big govt why cosign these frauds who pretend to want what you want?

I'm not against government, I'm against the government reaching into my manhood and doing what I can and should do for myself.
Not a real big difference between tiger and leopard is there?

Apple boasts 300 improvements, some won't be seen unless you got the intel processor but from the videos I've seen man it's damn impressive stuff. I'm in this Mac right now and if it wasn't for my job, I probably spend a majority of my time on it. I suppose in time I'll get used to it and come down off my Mac high but right now, this shit is nice.

Businesses falter everyday allday. People are laid off everyday allday.
One can subsidize industry in order to improve the economy and one can subsidize the healthcare of the workforce in that same economy to improve it or make it stronger.

I don't argue against subsidies or government aid. That's what you used to do on this very board which is why I brought it up. ;) That's what government is for.

Do you know how many working black people would be affected by your decision and how the creditors will view their situation you put them in as opposed to how creditors would view white people dealing with the exact same shit?

? That makes no sense. First of all people make money all over this world without government subsidizing their businesses. Secondly, like I said above, I only mentioned it because you mentioned how you don't like your tax dollars giving people a free ride in past conversations.
Spare me the concern for working people including working black people. The working poor are most effected by this legislation since they are the ones unable to provide healthcare to their children in an affordable manner. If you truly cared about working black people you wouldn't want them to be crushed by enormous debt when their children need medical care.

( I concede that is not fair to say but hey you mentioned that black people can think stuff ;) )

As a leader of the "free world" are you that short-sighted to make or support that kind of major decision? You do know who gets that bill when the states start crying out for help right? The federal government. Now how much do you pay?

See above.

?????wtf? You lost me. You presented data in a way that was inaccurate. I put it into its correct context. I also asked you some questions because I believed your position to be something else in regard to big government. At no point in time did I ask you to change your mind, change your beliefs or anything else.

Cmon man telling me "yes even black people think"?

Bruh I asked you legitimate questions regarding the issue and never brought up race or any stereotypes you had to buy into.
My remarks above about black workers are totally legit. You may have some alternate ideas about what will immediately help those black workers you mentioned and that's fine I'd love to hear about it. But to me the notion of holding the weakest members of society to be self-reliant while those at the top continue a never ending pursuit of a better situation through government manipulation and funded with the very same American tax dollars is total bullshit.

If hardwork and self reliance are good enough standards to hold an individual too let all individuals live by them and all corporations. To suggest otherwise IMO is hypocritical. That's my viewpoint. You obviously don't share it and that's cool.

Because man, like I said before, my reasons are I don't want the government to take more money from to me subsidize a condition we should do ourselves.

That's it. Nothing more.

They arent increasing your taxes to fund this. They already took your money- so its up to you whether you want to be mad they do this with it or be mad they killed 600,000 iraqis with it or built a fuckin bridge in Alaska with it or put it in some billionaires pocket.

They fuck up money when they get it. Not just this time everytime.

Why must they step into my fuckin' light and do my work??

Bruh that's my point. The same people who made it an issue not to fund this small program for insurance also make sure you pay exorbitant fees for medical care. They also make sure you pay crazy amounts for drugs. You can deduct a great deal in healthcare costs but to me fuck giving me a tax break - how about stopping the fuckin price rigging and monopolies?
I personally rather pay $100 than $10,000 and they can tax that $100.

I'm not against government, I'm against the government reaching into my manhood and doing what I can and should do for myself.

No argument there

Yeah Makk I had that colin coming. That was probably the longest, long winded post I've ever posted. Sorry man. You were the victim of a highly motivated, second cup of Maxwell House.

I won't go back into much of that long ass response because I think we are almost saying the same thing except that I never said I was against SCHIP. I'm against it's expansion. If I sounded like I was calling you stupid in my "black people think" comments, that was retorical. You are one of the few brothers here who have my greatest respect.

As far as Vista goes, no I have not given up on Vista. I can't because my work computer runs Vista and XP. I have to keep XP for some network tools I don't feel like installing on Vista since I don't use them that often.

But the Mac wasn't supposed to be this easy to use. I expected this huge learning curve and all kinds of trouble finding the stuff I use on Vista. Wasn't at all.

Yeah, I got to calm it down man. After a paragraphs on a messageboard, most peoples eyes just glaze over. Now I don't now about stupid people but I like the effects and shit.

Check out what I was able to do using this mac graphics package called Pixelmator. Works almost the same as Photoshop CS3

This is Ron Paul. His picture reminded me of a klan so I built this one.
Disclaimer: I only know he's white. Don't know he's klan so don't trip.
