Corinthian Colleges Everest University, a Corinthian college.

Fifteen students are refusing to pay back federal student loans taken out to attend schools owned by Corinthian Colleges Inc., a network of for-profit colleges located across the US and in Canada.

The New Yorker reports that Corinthian Colleges — which at one time enrolled more than 100,000 students — has faced a host of problems over the past few years, weathering lawsuits from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the states of Massachusetts and California.

In July the Department of Education forced Corinthian to sell or close down its schools.

However, that action didn't forgive the loans owed by former Corinthian students. A group of these students — who refer to themselves as the Corinthian 15 — created a website on which they have published a letter they wrote to the Department of Education asking for loan forgiveness.

The students call for solidarity among the "tens of millions of students" who are "in more debt than they can ever repay."

They're referring to the estimated $1.1 trillion of loans held by Americans, including many who attended for-profit colleges that are arguably a bad investment.

Here's the full letter published on the students' website:

TO THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION:

19 February, 2015

Who are we? We are the first generation made poor by the business of education.

We are people living paycheck to paycheck, single mothers, and young people just starting out. We wanted an education because we were driven to learn and to achieve a better life for ourselves and for our families.

We trusted that education would lead to a better life. And we trusted you to ensure that the education system in this country would do so. But Corinthian took advantage of our dreams and targeted us to make a profit. You let it happen, and now you cash in.

Each month you force us to make payments into an immoral system that profits from our aspirations.

We paid dearly for degrees that have led to unemployment or to jobs that don't pay a living wage. We can't and won't pay any longer.

Repayment plans presented as a helping hand simply aren't good enough. The wrong done to us is deeper than that.

We are not alone in this fight. Corinthian's predatory empire pushed hundreds of thousands into a debt trap. But even beyond for-profit schools, tens of millions of students are in more debt than they can ever repay. And you are the debt collector, with powers beyond a payday lender’s wildest dreams.

To the Department of Education and to the lenders, servicers, and guarantee agencies who have stolen our futures, we say: enough! Erase these loans.

To current and former college students across the country, we say: we stand with you to demand the end of a higher education system that profits from all our dreams. Join our fight.

We won't pay. We are the Corinthian Fifteen,

So it's begun. The quest for a bailout.

Re: The letter 15 students refusing to pay their federal loans wrote to the Dept of E

For-profit schools is another monster man. They are run by a lot of hard core conservatives.

I will ask this though. Why did they continue to go to that school in the first place? College is an investment. Whether it be non-profit, state supported, for-profit or private, you are investing yourself to an institution. So it's wise to back out of the investment if you do not feel like it is worth it. Nobody is forced to stay in school and now of days you better have a plan and do research on where you invest.

I understand that many who attend these for-profit schools are usually from a specific demographic and/or class in society. Single mothers are drive the nursing programs in most for-profit schools.

But there is no doubt in my mind that the school prey on those student and got them in debt. Unfortunately, they chose to stay despite the school credibility.

In Germany, College Education is free.

I think it is free in France.

If one student comes out and does something with his education, we all benefit with jobs and improved living standards. Just think about how much society has benefited from my education and learning, it is incalculable.

Re: The letter 15 students refusing to pay their federal loans wrote to the Dept of E

Had a girl I know rack of $50k of debt for a job that pays around $10-12 an hour
:smh:

Re: The letter 15 students refusing to pay their federal loans wrote to the Dept of E

Not all for profit schools are bad. Mine got me an $18 an hour job within two months of graduating. My former teachers helped me do even better two years later. A band I did a school project with hired me to assist in a recording session with some of the most prestigious studio musicians in the state.

That being said my kinda luck is rare. I hope they turn this into a movement

Re: The letter 15 students refusing to pay their federal loans wrote to the Dept of E

I don't think they understand how this shit works. They will have their wages and income tax garnished until the debt is paid. There is no choosing to not pay student loans.

Most people still think getting a degree(any degree)=getting a good paying job.

No your whiteness got you that job. 18 an hour ain't shit. Don't you live here in the Bay? You must be living in your car on that or the projects.

Regarding this article I feel nothing for any idiot that goes to a Devry or Everett college. Those schools are for strippers and escorts trying to get out. You never see men in those schools unless they really down and out. 9 times out 10 the girls in them schools are single mom's who have backpage ads. Whores on some I'm in Nursing school. No bitch you're in vocational CNA school. That is not a nurse.

Re: The letter 15 students refusing to pay their federal loans wrote to the Dept of E

At least they got to practice their penmanship

Re: The letter 15 students refusing to pay their federal loans wrote to the Dept of E

I have debt from a for profit school. I wasn't misled. I walked in and signed those loan papers myself. I took out loans as needed. I'm going to pay back my loans. Granted, my job pays well above the minimum wage, so I'm not necessarily in the same position as this group of people. The fact that they are not paid well does not relieve them of the commitment they made. Hell, if they get a bail out, I want one too.

Re: The letter 15 students refusing to pay their federal loans wrote to the Dept of E

The main thing you have to remember about Corinthian and Everest is that they lied to all their students.

Including me.

There was even a lawsuit of about seven plaintiffs that got paid a settlement in the millions a while back because they could not find jobs as they were promised.

This isn't about being in debt and finding a way out. This is about being lied to and not paying to facilitate those lies. Especially now that the school is under, it's almost as if why bother?

Re: The letter 15 students refusing to pay their federal loans wrote to the Dept of E

This why I tell people, "you dont necessarily go to college to get a degree in what you love, but to get a degree in a job field thats in demand"

Re: The letter 15 students refusing to pay their federal loans wrote to the Dept of E

Stop going for degrees that are worthless or run of the mill. I know many people with degrees in "business" or teaching and they barely make 50k a year. I know if they didn't apply themselves enough or that the degree is just worthless. When you have a jock in your same profession, your degree many not be much. Social work pays nothing. Students need to push themselves to take chances or just do their jobs for the love of it and not the money.

The College Conspiracy is the most comprehensive documentary ever produced about higher education in the U.S. The film exposes the facts and truth about America's college education system. 'College Conspiracy' was produced over a six-month period by NIA's team of expert Austrian economists with the help of thousands of NIA members who contributed their ideas and personal stories for the film. NIA believes the U.S. college education system is a scam that turns vulnerable young Americans into debt slaves for life.

 Damn.... But it is true. This isn't the 1980s. We have search engines. Don't people search this shit? My grade-school age kids know how to search, but adults can't?

People want something for nothing, and there are always smarter people who will take advantage of that. They thought they could put in 2-years and get great paying jobs when there are people out here with 4-year degrees from 'regular' colleges who can't find shit.

I remember one chick told me one of those schools had people poking each other with needles like the first week. It was for nursing. :smh:

Re: The letter 15 students refusing to pay their federal loans wrote to the Dept of E

If you're not attending a university, you're probably getting fucked.

Re: The letter 15 students refusing to pay their federal loans wrote to the Dept of E

I'm glad I went to college in the early 90's. I never had a student loan. Went to NCCU and my tuition was 1k a semester. I had the GI bill and worked part time. I was a little older (24) and wiser than most 18-year-olds. The military really prepared me mentally and financially for college.

Re: The letter 15 students refusing to pay their federal loans wrote to the Dept of E

folks always wanna borrow money, buy a car, buy a house, or something.

after signing on the dotted line and agreeing, they want to figure out a way to BACK OUT OF THE DEAL.

thats no honor.

do your research before buying something, attending a bs school. etc.

only in america.
where its cool, to borrow money, then say "oh i wont pay it back".

you may not be TOLD the tuition prices upfront, but its on the damn website in black and white, (maybe not the book prices), but why cant the avg person do research before they sign on the line.

folks are just dumb to begin with.
i was at greenbriar mall the other day. (they have an EVREST in the mall for those who are from ATL, yes really in the fucking MALL)

atlanta_west.jpg

i was at chick flia in the food court.
this dude knew her, said hi, and he say oh girl, whats been up, where u been?
she said , oh im going to evrest, studying to be a "DENTIST".
if she is dumb enough to belive she gonna get a real DR degree at evrest then thats on her.

they only offer a dental assistat program. (at best a $11-$15hr job). but

http://www.everest.edu/campus/atlanta_west

but in less than 30seconds, i found this program, and how much it will COST me, if i want to do this.

http://www.everest.edu/disclosures/gedt/351/dental-assistant

Tuition and fees: $16,971
Books and supplies: $965

now with that info, someone shuld look up to see how much would ONE make as a dental assistant? (i just randomlly said $11 an hour above)

so another 30seoncds on google, and this is what i found

http://www.bls.gov/ooh/Healthcare/Dental-assistants.htm

Hold up, Truth. There is DeVry, ITT Tech, and then everybody else.

Not the same as this Corinthian, bullsh!t.

In my opinion, though, if you not going Ivy or prestigous state school, why bother.

You got a better chance going to a community college to learn a skill or a trade.:dunno:

Re: The letter 15 students refusing to pay their federal loans wrote to the Dept of E

It's not about the school as far as a university degree is better than another type of college. Majority of kids who go to college for business admin or something else to enter the workforce are set up to fail.

If you're not doing something that will stand the test of time which is a skill, trade or profession, you're going to be caught up in just getting by, because the govt racket is to tie you to a bill for the next 30 years. College edumacation is the new debt, whereas a mortgage for a home used to be the other way to tie people down for 30 years. Now college loans are.

There is nothing and no way you can remove them. You are stuck with paying it, no matter what. So you better go for something that's worth it and not take the advice of some admissions office.

That vid I posted is a real eye opener about the system set up for many to fail.

Five other people in my graduating class got hired along with me. Same wage same position. Two were black one was Asian. My whiteness had little to do with it.

$18/hr isn't a lot, but it's a good start when the ink on your diploma is barely dry. Four years later I have a better job that pays considerably more. I'm also getting my shit together for a business loan. Another skill set this school taught me.

I'm talking about this hoe and those like her. I would bet 5 racks she was a stripper or backpage ho. Her whole vibe screams 160 an hour.

Lol, I taught a student that was a stripper and on backpage. I found that out because of 4 of my male students was hollering at her and telling what she did.
