PHOENIX - A still mother grieving would like to be at the Super Bowl on Sunday to represent her son, but Sherry Hill has yet to hear from the New England Patriots.
She is the mother of Marquis Hill, a Patriots defensive end who died in a jet-ski accident over Memorial Day weekend in his hometown of New Orleans. As the game approaches, her best therapy is to continue putting the finishing touches on a book she hopes to be published soon.
Speaking about her son Monday morning for a profile story, an emotional Sherry Hill expressed disappointment she has not been included.
"I don't see why I haven't been invited to the Super Bowl," she said. "I would like to be there to represent my son. I don't know what the circumstances are, but nobody has called me. I don't
think my son would be appreciative of that. It kind of hurts."
Marquis Hill, who played on the 2003 national championship team at LSU, was a second round pick by the Pats in 2004. He drowned on Lake Pontchartrain after his water scooter capsized. He help save a friend who was riding with him before disappearing.
The Pats have looked out for his family. Owner Robert Kraft chartered a flight for the entire organization to attend the funeral, which Kraft paid for. According to agent Albert Elias, Kraft also has contributed to a trust fund for Hill's young son, Ma'shy. The Pats have worn a sticker on their helmets all season with Hill's No. 91 on it.
"I'm just taking it one day at a time," Sherry Hill said. "I'm doing the best I can."
