Jeremy Renner Confirms Takeover of 'Mission: Impossible' Series

Because of the lukewarm box office reception of this year's action comedy Knight and Day starring Tom Cruise, Paramount thought it best to bring in another young agent to work with Cruise's character Ethan Hunt for Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and potentially take over the franchise. We already know that man is Jeremy Renner, but now, straight from the actor's mouth, we have some confirmation that the plan is for Renner to relieve Tom Cruise of his IMF duties. The actor recently spoke to MTV and confirmed the plans for the franchise to fall into his lap, but there are no solid plans for another new sequel just yet.

Renner revealed, "It's a franchise to potentially take over. I can't predict the future and what they want, but that's certainly the idea." However, whether or not a straight-up hand-off of the series will show up in the fourth installment of the franchise remains to be seen. Renner says, "I can't really go into the details of the script, because that's still evolving. It's Tom [Cruise's] baby. He's the engine behind the thing. What happens after that, we'll see." While Renner doesn't exactly have the same star power that Cruise had when he started the franchise back in 1996, his work on The Hurt Locker certainly didn't go unnoticed and once The Avengers and this Mission: Impossible sequel hit, I'm pretty sure he'll be a household name. What do you think?

Guess that rules him out as the villain.

Jeremy Renner is cool and all. But how is he going to swing Hawkeye, Mission Impossible, and the Bourne series? I don't see him taking over Mission Impossible if his Bourne movie is successful.

Supposedly Matt Damon is just sitting this one out. But if Bourne Legacy is more successful than Damon's Bourne movies:dunno: They start filming early next month in NY.

im guessing cruise will probably be team director in the next film(just appear at the beginning doing the"your mission should you choose to accept" thing and might show up at the end as well)

It looks like the same stuff from the last 2 movies. After the Bourne Identity and Casino Royale these spy movies REALLY need to step their game up.

you know I'm actually with you on this one. something about her puts me off

I wouldn't go so far as to say she puts me off, but I'm certainly indifferent to her. She's just a pretty face. There are a ton of those in Hollywood. There's absolutely no physical appeal to Paula Patton for me.

looks good. the MI series never disappoints, even MI2. wonder how they are going to write out Cruise's wife from the last film. He supposedly retired at the end of MI3. looks like he's back to work, she must have been killed somehow...

Base on on the trailer I didn't really liked the supporting cast nor the villian in this movie. What makes a good action movie is the villian has to be just as engaging as the the main or lead character. The villian has to almost steal and capture every scene he or she is in where he or she has a larger than life presence about them.

The supporting cast, simon pegg and also Paula Patton....she ain't a big enough of a star or a serious enough of an actor to really be convincng as a heroine or femme fatale. They should have added a well established female asian star like Michele Yeow to give the action film credability that would make ya say "yeah I gotta see that if she's in it".

But a villian is what makes an action film, not the lead character

Yours Truly....Professor
