Southerners can reach the presidency on the left since their political base is minority like a Jimmy Carter or Clinton due to the Civil War. Pence brought shame to the North with that Southern hooligan behavior, now it will be much stricter for somebody from the right to become president even if they are from the North. A black president had to pass these filtering mechanism by being biracial and appearing black.
They will have to embrace immigration or be in an interracial marriage with a bed wench or Latina. It isn't about appealing to your base, but bypassing these filtering mechanism.

What's funny is that he could have hard turned on Trump and scripted himself as "the savior of the Republican party", but he just couldn't muster the courage for it. That, and the fanatic part of the base would have chewed him. But they hate him anyway, so he might as well have hedged his bets.
The truth is that none of the candidates are worth a crap this round. You really don't want to be queued up as the one who lost to Biden's second run, anyway. So maybe he thinks he can ride out this cycle on the sidelines and try to sneak back in four years from now. Not that he'll be any more popular then.
It is weird to me, though, how hard GOP politicians will pull every crazy and nonsensical move imaginable under the slightest possibility that they might get to be President. It can't be that serious.
Even though he was a 98% dick riding MAGAT, he did one actual good thing in refusing play ball with the trump election denial clown show, so even if trump were to somehow get knocked out for whatever reason, there's no way in hell enough of the party would ever coalesce around him. We need to setup preclearance like they do for voting for the Southern candidates. The North is a much more refined culture versus their jungle food/barbarism based on my experience.
