Microsoft Abandons the Zune

It’s probably been quite a few years coming, but Microsoft has announced that their solution to Apple’s iPod, the Zune, is being discontinued. The news came by press release from MSFT with this statement:
We recently announced that, going forward, Windows Phone will be the focus of our mobile music and video strategy, and that we will no longer be producing Zune players. So what does this mean for our current Zune users? Absolutely nothing. Your device will continue to work with Zune services just as it does today. And we will continue to honor the warranties of all devices for both current owners and those who buy our very last devices.
Microsoft is currently encouraging users to transition to Windows Phone (at least they were in an October 3rd press release that was quickly removed from the Zune Support Team website as a report in error) which is possibly the route that was first anticipated once the Windows Phone was unveiled. Being the platform to lay the foundation for Microsoft’s Metro UI which is the very same that is seen on Windows Phone 7 devices, Windows 8 and the soon to be released Xbox 360 dashboard update, the Zune had one of the biggest (and worst) uphill battles to overcome. Over the 5 year lifespan of Microsoft’s portable media device, low sales and questionable adaptability from the consumers saw year after year of decreasing sales.
If you’re still wanting to get your hands on the Zune, move fast, because once they’re out of stock, that’s it.

Took them long enough... they try to overtake everyone and everything but don't put any work in making the product the very best! The iPod Ect. has improved and all of the others are just riding on their wake in the water! :hmm:

The last Zune was actually a dope ass device. Zune HD was sick too. I hope this means the price drops crazily cuz i'm in the market for an MP3 player.

I can't bring myself to buy an ipod which only plays music & video and doesn't record voice notes, and has no radio or bluetooth support. Thats just stupid.

The lane is still open for a company to become the #2 in this market but no one has captured it. Creative was looking good when the released the Zen Micro but they have too many different styles now and they abandoned the form factor that made the most sense.

:hmm: iPods support bluetooth! + half the shit you said there's an app for that!

You katz kill me in 2011 still bringing up tech gripes from 2007:smh::smh::smh:

There is a difference in the radio though.. A meaningful difference. The zune has a built in tuner and does not require wifi or mobile data to use their radio. So although their the same thing they are completely different.

 Digital FM tuner yeah that's true indeed i Devices do not support...I haven't regularly
listened to broadcast radio in sooo long I almost forgot the shits free.

ipod touch has bluetooth, a regular ipod does not. none besides the touch, and I would never buy an iphone without a phone which is what the ipod touch is.

and there is no native fm tuner any ipod except the nano. and what the hell imma do with 8gbs, listen to 3 songs all day?

the point which i think youre missing is that ALL mp3 players should have an fm tuner, they cost less the 5 cents to put in a device and steve jobs doesnt put it in because he cant make money off of the radio.

Love my ZuneHD, will have to cop the 64hd, with another price drop! It was MS's own fault for Zune products not moving, due to lack of pushing it, advertisment. They actually had a really good product on their hands, but refuse to really push it.

I might have to look for a closeout price on this. Do they have a 128gb or bigger model? I have had bad experiences with ipods. My ipod classic pauses on its own with out being touched. This is the second one that does the same thing. It crashes when hooked up to itunes and somehow has rated a rack of songs on its own. Now the screen us fucked up from me throwing it.

This is a smart move by microsoft. i dont understand the need to have a smart phone and an mp3 player, when ur smart phone can act as an mp3 player

ZuneHD was perfect size and weight, don't care to have my phone on me, when I'm working out or just relaxing, nor do I care to flood it with a bunch of MP3 files, maybe a few, but not my entire catalog on my phone. Oh well, will just hold on to mine and get an extra one.

I actually liked my Zune. I got a 30GB Brown one for $90, bought the wife a pink one for around the same price. It is bulky, but who gives a fuck. 30GB of music, man, when I get on my tractor to cut my grass I just put it on random and go.

Three years ago, a coworker sold me two of hers for $25! One of them the battery doesn't last, on the other one the lock slides back and forth and you can't stop it, but it is 80GB!!! For that one I just put a little piece of broomstick in there and taped over it - problem solved.

Aside from that, I fucking hated iTunes. With the Zune, you didn't have to switch your music over to another format. Drag n Drop. Done. I liked that. Add to it, with most ipods, as soon as you connect them to another computer it starts syncing and dumping your music. Fuck that. I'm gonna miss the Zune. I might get a cheap one if I can find one.

Zune, we hardly knew ye.
