Michelle Obama to Become Honorary AKA!

And no honorary degrees and honorary membership into a BLGO are not the same thing. The latter SHOULD be decided upon service to the community, not your popularity or status in the spotlight.

Sez who??

Prominant people are awarded "honorary" membership in all sorts of organizations, including everything from police forces to the Boy/Girl Scouts. It doesn't mean anything beyond its publicity value to the group and a note on the honoree's resume.

Same thing. Michelle isn't enrolling in college (and moving into a sorority) anytime soon, dumbass.

*sigh* I know this fool. But we are talking about honorary induction into a sorority. All members of that sorority had to undergo a process in which they learned the extensive history of that group. So she gets the letters, what the fuck does she know about the founders, or the Delta Split. I bet she can't even name what university it was formed at? Or 5 of the Elite 8 (and the UPS guys).

And most people are given honorary degrees because of their significant achievements in a field closely related to that degree. People who get honorary sorority inductions are only given so, due to their celebrity status.

i agree that honorary degrees are NOT like honorary memberships

if an org wanted to honor someone they could give out a scholarship in their name...or give them a special award

the even deeper way to honor someone is to let them in the family...sharing secrects and history which is the nearest and dearest things to the member's hearts

in my opinion if any member...honorary or not has no invovlment or association with the org they made a lifetime committment to there is no point aknowleging thier membership

honorary members take the same oath everyone else does...

You're kidding, right? Why do they hand out "honorary degrees" to famous and accomplished folks every spring? It's a symbolic show of appreciation and respect, and has no REAL value. It's just a gesture that says, "we admire you and/or your achievements." Period. Relax.

If that was the case why say "so and so, is an Your org here" at interest meetings or when it's time to recruit? answer: trying to sell like the org is what made them who they are and not the blood sweat n tears it took the individual to get there. Just my 2 cents.

WTF??? No one's gonna say Michelle Obama is actually an AKA. It's just a nice, ceremonial gesture from the most historically important black female organization in the country. Seems fitting given her own place in history.

Holy shit. Some people are really wacked-out on this subject. Do people understand the word "honorary?"

The AKA's will.

That's fine, but I doubt they're gonna expect Michelle to show up at reunions and social functions. They're a very accomplished and bright group of women. They get the idea of "honorary" (even if you don't).

You big dummy. You're missing the point. Black organizations like to have bragging points. They don't give a fuck if she shows up or if she can even tell the significance of the pearls. They just want to be able to say "We got the first Black First Lady in our group and THEY don't."
