Where will Michael Vick play football in 2009?
By Chris Chase

The Atlanta Falcons announced this week that they were looking to trade the rights to Michael Vick, who is indefinitely suspended from the NFL and currently imprisoned for his role in a dogfighting operation. In essence, they want somebody to give them something in return for their massively overvalued, damaged product. Good luck with that.

It's not even a guarantee that Vick will be back in the NFL in 2009. Roger Goodell has said he won't consider reinstatement until Vick's legal obligations are settled, and that might not be until July. Plus, it's Goodell and he likes to drag things out, so don't expect a quick decision on Vick's future.

If Vick does get reinstated, it is still difficult to imagine that there will be too many teams lining up to give away draft picks in order to get a guy who's been in prison for the past 18 months and is due to get $15 million in 2009 from his current contract. More likely, teams will wait for Atlanta to release Vick, thus enabling them to sign him to a new, more logical deal.

Assuming that all these things happen, what's the most likely destination for Vick in 2009? Shutdown Corner lists the five most likely spots:

1) Oakland -- Other locales might make more football sense, but Vick landing in Oakland make the most overall sense. The Raiders are irrelevant, Al Davis won't care about the negative press and a good number of Oakland fans can relate to Vick's status as an ex-con. JaMarcus Russell is already there at QB, but that's just semantics.

2) Seattle -- Former Falcons coaches Jim Mora and Gregg Knapp are now running the show in Seattle. With Matt Hasselbeck possibly on his way out, this could be a good fit for Vick.

3) San Francisco -- Shaun Hill and J.T. O'Sullivan may not be the answers.

4) Minnesota -- The Vikings are a quarterback away from being a true contender in the NFC, so they seem like the most logical landing spot for Vick. But Vick isn't a Drew Brees-type who can be easily dropped into a pre-existing system, he's the kind of guy whom the system has to be built around. Also, the team is in a battle to get public funding for a new stadium and bringing in a social pariah like Vick may not be the best way to win support for a stadium plan that's already questionable in this economy.

5) New York Jets -- The Jets have said they aren't interested in acquiring Michael Vick. They weren't interested in trading for Brett Favre either.

Honorable Mention: Washington -- If you think Dan Snyder hasn't called up Jim Zorn in the middle of the night at least once this month to bounce off some ideas about how Michael Vick could help the Redskins, then you don't know Danny.

Not listed: Detroit (even Michael Vick has standards), Tampa Bay (unlikely that a new coach and GM would begin careers with Vick at QB) and Kansas City (ditto).

My beloved bears should snag him up, hell what else do they have. But they should just wait until atlanta cuts him but those cowards at Halas hall do not have the guts to do it.

You've got to be kidding!!!!! :smh:

(What is up with this ongoing, unrequited black male love affair with such a mediocre, underachieving player?)

Everything you claim Mike Vick did that year, McNabb and other (non-#1 overall) black QBs have done 10x better.

you know what funny?? If you take Vick's stats and compare them to Great NFL QB's. You would be surprised to find that his stats his first 5 seasons are very similar to

John Elways:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Running QB's can't work long term in the NFL because they will get killed. You forget Vick was starting to stay injured.

Running some? Ok. Running as your main threat? Get the stretcher ready.

Also, I hate to break it to you guys, Vick wasn't that great his last couple years in the league.

Teams just started containing him in the pocket and spying on him. I'm convinced ninjas had Vick on their Madden teams and thought that was real life.

YEA AN INCREASE IN PASSING YARDS, TD PASSES, AND 1000+ RUSHING YARDS IN A SEASON IS CONSIDERED "CONTAINMENT"

I co sign 100% but watch these crackers try to make Tim "Bitch Ass" Tebow the next fake ass vick real fast!!!!

nah, what it was is this in a nutshell: vick fucked himself up by not backing dan reeves. reeves was MAKING VICK be a quarterback. reeves is a discplinarian and lots of players dont like that, but reeves get results, which is WHY dallas brought reeves in a couple weeks ago (reeves left over contract differences). anyway, when atlanta hired mora and greg knapp, they let vick do what he wanted to do and didnt work on his fundamentals or his ability to read coverages. they ran a simple stretch option play with vick and defenses knew that shit was coming and started staying home and tackling vick instead of going for the fake and honing in on warrick dunn. i KNOW football. reeves himself was pointing out how vick lost his basic footwork. reeves FIRED his longtime quarterbacks coach himself for not working on vick's fundamentals after vick threw for 2,936 yards, so that lets you know right there that reeves KNEW vick could produce more yardage from the pocket. when people say atlanta's receivers improved under matt ryan, its true, but the reason wasnt because vick couldnt be a pocket quarterback, the reason is vick was being allowed to roam and freelance and run those options instead of making him sit in the pocket. when vick DID throw the ball, there was no timing between him and the receivers for that reason. vick's dropback was too fast because thats how he plays. reeves would slow vick's dropback and FORCE him to sit in the pocket. to maximize vick's running ability from a pocket perspective, reeves would ROLL THE POCKET, allowing vick to see running lanes from the context of still being in the pocket and looking downfield. this ALL comes back to coaching. coaches DEVELOP players.

THIS IS WHAT VICK FUCKED UP:

REEVES WAS ALWAYS HANDS ON WITH VICK:

GREGG KNAPP SCRATCHING HIS HEAD, LIKE HE DID WITH VICK:

REEVES KNEW MICHAEL NEEDED GROOMING, THATS WHY VICK WAS DOING 5 - 7 STEP DROPS IN REEVES OFFENSE. THAT EXTRA ROOM HELPED VICK WITH IS PERIPHIAL (sp) VISION AND ALSO HELPED HIM SEE HIS RECEIVERS OVER THOSE 6'7" LINEMEN. THIS ALSO NEGATED THE UP THE MIDDLE BULL RUSH, AND GAVE VICK A CHANCE TO USE HIS LEGS IF NEEDED BE. MOST PEOPLE FORGET THAT VICK DID NOT THROW AN INT UNTIL HIS 7TH GAME OF HIS FIRST YEAR STARTING.

Fuck ya'll for making me co-sign Blunt!!!! Isn't that the same season he quit on his team in the Green Bay came because it was too cold? Fuck Vick! You can't be a great QB when your best attribute is your legs!

ACTUALLY, HE BECAME THE FIRST QB TO WIN IN GREENBAY IN THE PLAYOFFS...

AND HE WON CONVINCINGLY

AND IT WAS COLD:hmm:

Mike Vick Stats

Passing Stats

Year Team G Comp ATT PCT YDS. AVG TD LNG INT RAT
2005 ATL 15 214 387 55.3 2412 6.2 15 58 13 73.1
2006 ATL 16 204 388 52.6 2474 6.4 20 55 13 75.7

So basically he was average to below average as a passer. Never completed mre than 56% of his passes, only averaged 6.4 yards per completion. Now he did run the ball well especially in 2005 but he also had lots of naggign injuries that affected his performance.

Face it. Vick is not that big of a dude. If he kept getting hit while running, it would be :itsawrap:

First of all, to paraphrase a great Negro poet: "Fuck yo stats, nigga!"

Funny how this thread centers largely around how much better his passing was under Reeves, which you have mysteriously left out of the stats you chose to make your point.

Beyond even that, anyone who knows anything about Vick knows stats for him have always been different than a traditional QB, and while that speaks to his weaknesses, it fails completely at highlighting his strengths.

My point was that you clearly are speaking about things you don't really follow closely. You're flat-out not talking about what actually happened, you're talking about what your assumptions, and your assumptions are way off base.

And once again, two words: Greg Knapp. If you don't know who he is, what he does, you probably don't know enough to intelligently speak on Vick's strengths and weaknesses.

That being said, fuck that dogfighting bozo for killing defenseless animals, fucking his team, fucking his fans, and making those racist fucks happy.

Thank you for making a thread and subsequent sensible posts, I love it when real sports fans (and not fanboys) speak their piece.

Again bruh, thanks and props.:yes::yes::yes:

From one football head to another, well said.

2002, the ONLY year vick had a complete tutoring by dan reeves:

passing yds 2,936
rushing yds 777
quarterback rating people always hollering about = 81.6
total touchdowns running and throwing = 24
interceptions 8

thats almost 4,000 yards PRODUCTION coming from your quarterback.
the stats speak for themselves. vick was gonna change the game at quarterback forever and the white folks didnt like that. wouldnt have been no more peyton mannings because vick was proving you could put a athlete at quarterback, like they have ALWAYS DONE IN HIGHSCHOOL AND COLLEGE, with a arm and take over the quarterback position. the little white boys wouldnt have that position SAVED for them no more and the big contract that goes with it. i examine the whole picture of whats going on and that NOTHING has changed since this:

s4q9m9.jpg

bump. told yall almost TWO years ago that vick was gonna change the position.
