But do you understand where Q-tip is coming from??

I fully understand where Tip was coming from, but that was not called for. Even with the differences between Rappaport and Q-Tip, Q-Tip should appreciate the fact that Michael loved ATCQ's music so much, he decided to do a documentary on them.

This is hip hop. Color or race should not be brought into this at all. :smh: I hope they settle their differences, and promote this great movie showcasing the group we know as ATCQ.

Tip wasn't makin much sense, and Micheal's "response" made even less. He called them so he could say that?

I understand, however who the fuck else was stepping up to make a feature film about Tribe? Damn sure wasnt gonna be Spike Lee or any other black directors..

As far as the movie, I think they dwelled a little too much on the Q/Phife beef, but fuck, for the average person that knows nothing about them, they have to make some kinda of drama to make shit interesting to the viewer. I thought it was well done... Q Tip is a perfectionist, admitted by everyone, and nothing would have pleased him..

Very good point you bring up. Perfectionists are their worst enemies. At the end of the day, I just want to celebrate the music and career Tribe had.

All the bickering is bullshit. I respect Rappaport for doing the movie

this doc makes it appear that q-tip is going against the grain with everybody right about now,,, except ali shaheed, who stays quiet as a church mouse, almost as not to ruffle any feathers,,,

And it might take Ali to speak up to squash the bullshit :smh:

Kamaal is buggin......i understand the email thing had him upset but the
movie is dope.He should just spread the word, enjoy the effort and be happy
in the fact that Tribe is in the limelight again and heads that don't know
the story or the music will now know.

Peace

The SUBJECT of an independent documentary should NEVER be totally "happy" with the final product. If he is then that would mean it was just a suck-up job and not authentic. The angrier the subject is, the better.

the fact that he don't know what Tip means by "we need to tell our own stories" kinda hurts his whole case.... I am not a tribe fan... I saw the documentary... it was alright... as far as hip hop documentaries go it was really good... but for a lack of competition... the first half started great then it just turn into something else.. like they decided to make it dramatic and controversial.... which was silly... it didn't have to go there... they could have covered more about the quiet muslim dude ali sheesh or w/e... but they didn't have to make it Q-Tip the superstar vs Phife the Dialysis patient...

Just like Backstage and Fade to Black didn't focus on Rocafella beefs... even tho they was with Murder Inc and Ruff Ryders they made it respectable... as i said i am not a tribe fan but that wasn't a good look for Q-Tip... even tho you could see Phife was just frustrated with his health at some points they made it like it was all Q-Tip

my 2 c

fwiw I don't think he is blaming Rappaport for it and not saying that he regrets using a white director I think he is more saying he should not have handed the story over to Hollywood and that machine to make it into a movie

 @ the idea that Rapaport and this film are a part of "Hollywood and that machine." :smh:

The LAST thing Hollywood is interested in is an ATCQ documentary.

/thread just like mtv had both sides, the point of a doc is to explore all sides

Dave from De La said it best when asked about ATCQ's future.
"It's disappointing...I feel like, you know when we see Tribe on stage we want to believe that there's love. And if it's really not and behind the scenes it's some B.S. goin' on...I'd rather them not be up there."

Sad, but I have to agree with Blunt...People need to stop placing everything in Hollywood in the "machine vs. the black man" category...yes Hollywood has horrible problems with racism, but this documentary was about a fan making a movie to show his love for the group he loved

You gotta admit though....the email situation was pretty underhanded.
When culturally there already may be some apprehension about that type of situation happening....then you get an email with them talkin' about "we'll fuck them on everything else".

That's dirty pool right there.

Q-Tip didnt like the fact of the picture was painted of him how he treated Phife, but I'm lost, Phife ain't aint deny that. Didn't seem like a lie to me. Everyone felt the same way about it Jarobi and Ali. So seems like the only person that's even stepping up to the plate beefing is the one who showed his true colors.

Do you see any of the other 3 members bitching about the movie? I thought the movie was great to bring back that era of all the groups that helped form hip hop.

tell your own stories??

how about owning your own publishing, record labels, distribution, studios even radio stations.

this niggu's worried about who tells the story.

Tip feeling himself way too much....its honorable that someone wants to expose your legendary story to the world....plus the fact that the screenings have been getting standing ovations and rave reviews

Usually these beefs are about money, and Hollywood is no different than the music industry. People will try to fck you any chance they get.

True, but the piece claims the Rapaport responds to Q-Tip's grievances, but he didn't respond to the main one.

Michael Rapaport full of shit he knew what Q tip was talking about stop letting these white muthafuckas tell black people stories. I actually liked the Documentary but the beef shit was focused on to much. Michael Rapaport trying to be a film maker that cac always been a dick rider how can I be down cracker. It is some Culture Vulture shit ultimately. I would like to see the Little X's of the world start getting into this type of work. I wonder how much it cost to make the Doc.

Little X and others can do it...the question is do they want to? Its not Rapapors problem that he wanted to honor the Tribe....I do wish a black person wouldve done it, but Im not asking Rapaport to hold his project off for years untuil someone got interested in the project...hell, how many music docs have been made and released worldwide recently anyway?

Q-Tip's a bitch

Why did he agree to it in the first place

Unless you're Michael Moore, documentaries don't make money

If that was the case why go back on the producers credit that was supposedly agreed on before hand?

And yet despite that, Q-tip still advocates going to see the movie.

He's entitled to his beef, 'cos that's how he feels.
