Michael Bloomberg vetoes cop oversight bills

Mayor Michael Bloom-berg made good on his word Tuesday to veto a pair of bills that would increase police scrutiny.

The mayor said he rejected the bills, which would create an NYPD inspector general and increase the ability of civilians to sue the police for racial profiling, because they would undermine city safety.

The NYPD “is also subject to more internal and external oversight than any other police department in the United States,” he wrote in his veto letter.

The City Council is expected to have the support for an override of the veto, a council spokesperson said.

Both pieces of legislation were created in response to growing criticism of several NYPD tactics, including “stop and frisk.”

A proposed inspector general would oversee police policies, have a term independent of the mayor and make recommendations to improve efficiency and relations between the police and public.​

I mean that's not a good enough reason to say the city safety would be in jeopardy. Obviously internal affairs for NYPD would be working in the IG's office anyway.

The mayor vetoing with the commissioner support is because it takes the power out of the hands of the mayor and commissioner.. Basically the Mayor and the Commonsioner have somebody higher than them to answer too.. LoL

That shit has ALWAYS irked me, that a cop's "word" on the witness stand is gospel above any and everybody else, as if they're a better race of people, but lo and behold they are chosen from amongst us plain humans, and ALL of them have the same fallibilities as any other person, so if they were liars, thieves and/or cheaters before, they've been given carte blanche to proceed in their own ways!!!

Whoa there bruh, sorry, but you can't even begin to compare Detroit to NYC, you're underestimating the sheer size of NYC, despite "Stop & Frisk" being in the news, the fact remains that it is truly only carried out in select neighborhoods, and those are the crime-ridden pockets of the city, I live in a middle-class neighborhood (same as former Congressman Floyd Flake & former Deputy Mayor & current Chancellor of the Dept. of Education Dennis Walcott) and have NEVER been approached or ever witnessed a "S & F" stop in my neighborhood, but have seen several in pockets of ENY, Brownsville & Park Slope, and, as far as I know, NONE of my people has ever been put thru this either, it is an issue for us because I do realize that in targeting neighborhoods, they are targeting US, this shit wouldn't stand in a White neighborhood, and it shouldn't stand in ANY Black neighborhood either!
