Jay Harris, Downingtown East’s star wide receiver, said he phoned a Michigan State assistant two weeks ago and broke the news.

He would not be a Spartan.

“I wish we could’ve got you,” Harris said the coach told him.

It was not a rival program that drew Harris, but instead a different career path. The 5-foot-11, 162-pound senior said he wants to make it as a rapper.

John Lewandowski, Michigan State's associate athletic director/communications, said "it was a mutual decision."

He is ranked by ESPN as the state’s 17th ranked senior and second-best wideout. Harris scored 13 touchdowns last season on 54 catches for 792 yards.

“I’ve been thinking about doing this for a couple of years now,” said Harris, who perfoms under the name Jay DatBull.
His first single “DatBull 4 Life,” was uploaded to YouTube in late April and has surpassed 50,000 views.

Harris said he made his decision to forego football about a week before the video debuted. He knew people would watch it, Harris said, but not that many in such a short time.

A mixtape is slated for a June 1 release and Harris said he plans to work with a professional producer this summer.

“I try to take advantage of every opportunity I get and for him to like my music and reach it to me, I really appreciated that,” Harris said.

Harris said his commitment to Michigan State last year was “halfhearted.” He said he first flirted with a career in music during his freshman year at Downingtown East.

“I’ve always had this in the back of my head, but never had the courage to tell my parents that this is what I want to do,” Harris said.

He could rap his ass off at college, instead of college dropout he can name his album rapper with a backup plan(degree).

:hmm:.. I wish him the best of luck!! However, someone should've told young blood, he can rap, play football and go to school at the same time!! Anyway...

Somebody Might Wanna Tell Him He Can Do Both, There is an Off Season.....And If He Fuck Up and Get Drafted It Could Make Things Easier For Himself...Just Think of the Football as the Day Job Seed Money Type Thing

He obviously doesn't understand that very few rappers are going gold these days that aren't named Jigga, Eminem, Macklemore or Drake!

Really!!! I could see if he was coming with some Kendric Lamar shit but rappin about the same shit bitches and hos, how many trees he can smoke.
He's mom must be proud!!!!
Hope it works out but I doubt it.

I just watched that corny ass video he put together and if he would rather hang out with 8-10 dudes then live the d-1 college football life lol he's crazy. LOL rappers wish they had athlete money.

Not only that but he was smoking what looked like weed in the video which means he would have had problems with the NCAA anyway.

th

This is just a cover-up. He doesn't want to give up smoking weed and partying, so he'll do what fits in with that. Become a rapper. Now someone who has love for the sport can claim that spot.

Let me get this straight ... Bo Jackson played both baseball and football, this kid can't play football and rap at the same time. He must think he's gonna be the Beatles of rap.

Well, you know what, good for him. He could have said I wanna be a drug dealer. You can go back to college and get that degree at anytime in your life. No, he can't play football, get recruited, but if he wants to rap while young and sees where that leads him, do you. If rapping ain't working out for him then he'll hit the books and get that degree. What I learned is that college will accept you at any age, don't be rushed to going straight to college from high school, it will be there, you life dreams may not. Lots of college players don't make it big in the NFL so football isn't a lock to a good life neither. Football isn't life, some get bored with it, so maybe dude is saying I did football, want to do my own thing now.

Didn't one NFL player only play one year then retired to become a dentist? I believe he was from Sanford.

Except a free ride to play sports at a good DI institution apparently.

Only thing is, if he goes to school NOW his education is FREE.....it might not be if he decides to go back after trying rap, & he might not have enough $$$ from rap to pay for school out of pocket

Didnt anybody explain that to him. Plus the publicity of being a rapping D1 athlete is a great marketing ploy.

True, free education now compare to the uncertain future of rapping. He didn't think of that when it came to his decision.

Somebody forward this video to that kid.

start @9:45:

Granted he wasn't playing a sport but he graduated from michigan state's rival school, michigan, and was working with major label artists while going to school.

On second thought maybe its a Philadelphia thing? Will Smith turned down a scholarship to MIT to rap with Jazzy Jeff...

A free education for a so-called rap career  getting to travel for free, play in front of thousands of people on national TV.

I'm all for dude following his true love, but he could do both if he really wanted to

Jay Harris, one of the area’s top football recruits, was stripped of his scholarship by Michigan State earlier this month after he posted a series of profanity-laced rap videos on YouTube, a source said Tuesday.

Under the name “Jay DatBull,” the Downingtown East senior has uploaded nine videos to YouTube. Using explicit lyrics, Harris raps about drugs, women, and homosexuals.

His first single, “DatBull 4 Life,” surpassed 50,000 views over the weekend and appears to show Harris smoking marijuana while sitting behind the steering wheel of a car.

Harris, a senior wide receiver, said he freely chose a rap career over football. A Michigan State spokesman said it was “a mutual decision.”

“I’ve always had this in the back of my head, but never had the courage to tell my parents that this is what I want to do,” Harris said.

are we sure it was his decision

only way I could see this possibly making sense is if he already had a deal on the table, even then he could still do both

Dude has to learn that until your dream comes true Stick with the road you are on that pays. I got a government job in hate it And I want to be a writer, but right now that job pays the bills until the writing thing comes through. If the writing thing never comes true I still make 50 grand a year (midwest money) and live a decent life. However, When I finish the book It gets published And they give me a bonus I can tell my boss like Scarface told his boss And half baked...fuck you, fuck you, you're cool, and fuck you! Im out. Until then I work the government job... that I hate

Here are all of his videos. Only one of the nine has 50k views because SI linked it last week. The next most popular has around 1000 views and most of those clicks probably came from SI lurkers. :smh:

IMO, this guy just intentionally threw away a free ride to college, and to be honest he has ZERO legitimate talent as a potential rapper. It's just like all of these thirsty chicks posting IPhone duckface selfies on Instagram who now think they are going to be the next Tyra Banks. Who the f*ck is advising this child? This is so sad...
