METS Gary Sheffield Wants Out, NOW.........

.....so he can catch on with a contender, or, at least get a Met extention for 2010. Met G.M., Omar Minaya is lukewarm to the extention idea, telling Sheff that he may not be in the Met's future plans. The Mets are currently mired in 4th, around 15-games out.

While Sheff's season stats are far from 'mind boggling', they are decent for a 41-year old ballplayer..... .286 Batting Avg.; 43-RBI's,; 10-HR's,; and OBP, .335. Met manager, Jerry Manuel wants him back, and expressed those feelings to Minaya.....to no avail. Sheff may be without a team, next season.

The Mets are paying him $400,000 this season, while the Tigers are picking up the remaining $13.6M completing a contract signed with Detroit a three years ago.

this is odd...ole buddy has a championship under his belt...i think there is more to this story than what they are letting on...but as always, sheffield will let us know in due time.

He probably wants a crack at 3000 hits. But the only way he's going to do it would be as a DH. No way those knees survive another season of running around in the outfield at age 42 or 43.

- this would be silly....in baseball, 500 hrs or 3000 hits automatically gets you in the HOF...he has 500 already, and 3,000 ain't gonna happen...

To do that he'll have to hook-up with an AL club, and accept the FACT its the only role available. Initially, he embraced such a role when he was with Detroit, then balked. Maybe his experience will make him 'realistic' about his limited ability. Something many ballplayers find hard accepting.

Plus, he has to realize that 'big contracts' are a thing of the past. Yoiu don't get such contracts by producing low double digit HR's.

Along w/a weak knee is a weak hamstring, and 3000-hits will be a stretch. I don't know if Sheff has the needed discipline--or patience-- to reach that goal.

Jim Thome - 563 HR
Rafael Palmiero - 569 HR
Mark McGwire - 583 HR
Sammy Sosa - 609 HR
Manny Ramirez - 540 HR
Frank Thomas - 521 HR
Fred McGriff - 493 HR
Carlos Delgado - 473 HR (still active)

all these dudes ain't making the HOF. Especially not on home runs alone. But to get 500HRs and 3000 hits, it's practically guaranteed. Even if you were in the middle of a scandal (unless you're name is Palmiero and you get caught lying). Only guys to do it are Aaron and Robinson (and Palmiero). Sheffield's chances are slim and none, but there is still an outside chance to do it

-----IF-----

a) he gets that extension
b) it's on an AL team as the full time DH.

Keep in mind that if he gets close to 3000 hits, a bad team might bring him back just to see him try for it. But he's still got a ways to go for that.

He wanted out from playing with my Tigers. He cried he wanted to go back home to new york like his fam. He does not know what he really wants.

As much as I would love to see Sheff reach 3000-hits, he won't make it. Right now he has approximately 2686, including the 71-hits so far garnered this season. Assuming he gets a contract with for 2-yrs. with an AL team, he'll have to average 157 per season to reach 3000. A 'power-hitter' tends to approach batting with 'all-or-nothing' technique. Finesse is not in their batting repertory. In fact he'll probably slightly less than 100-hits for the current season. If he never gets another 'hit', he'll will get to the HOF. The man's career offensive stats are very impressive!

The "Crime Dog", Fred McGriff retired in 2005, and won't be eligible for the HOF until next year. He may be voted in by the Veterans' Committee eventually. He may be one of the few elected --in modern times--having less than 500-HRs. But he did have 2490 hits, and was a very good fielder.

Frank Thomas will get in without getting 3000-hits (approximately 532 short). He hit some big HRs, almost 500 doubles, 1000+RBIs, etc. Most importantly: NO PED or HGH
accusations................so far. Age 41/19 yrs service.

Jim Thome will probably get in ..eventually. He'll never be a member of the 3000-hit Club (needs around 900), and has 77-hits so far this season. By the time Thome retires, his HR total will exceed 600. Age 39/18yrs of service.

Garry's a scrub, I hated the signing when the Yankees got him and I loved it when the Mets got him, losers should stick together:D

Omar will keep him there, and next year no contender will want him..................I don't think there's a contender that would take him now anyway....:smh:

that's what he gets for being a cry baby!!

Damn, Lex, how do you really feel about the guy? In fairness, Sheff has put up some impressive numbers over his career.

- this is true...but the only ones that won't make it are the ones that were all roided up...thome and frank thomas are gonna be in there without question - maybe even fred mcgriff...

but u are right, 500 homeruns is no longer an automatic HOF inductee as it once was, and that is sad...
