Breast Self Examination

Its amazing to me that many women still do NOT know how to do self exams. Ladies feel free to touch yourselves.
If you find anything and I do mean anything consult your doctor ASAP.

The Five Steps of a Breast Self Exam

Step 1: Begin by looking at your breasts in the mirror with your shoulders straight and your arms on your hips.

Here's what you should look for:

* breasts that are their usual size, shape, and color.

* breasts that are evenly shaped without visible distortion or swelling.

If you see any of the following changes, bring them to your doctor's attention:

* nipple discharge

* dimpling, puckering, or bulging of the skin.

* a nipple that has changed position or an inverted nipple (pushed inward instead of sticking out).

* redness, soreness, rash, or swelling.

Step 2: Now, raise your arms and look for the same changes.

Step 3: While you're at the mirror, gently squeeze each nipple between your finger and thumb and check for nipple discharge (this could be a milky or yellow fluid or blood).

Step 4: Next, feel your breasts while lying down, using your right hand to feel your left breast and then your left hand to feel your right breast. Use a firm, smooth touch with the first few fingers of your hand, keeping the fingers flat and together.

Cover the entire breast from top to bottom, side to side—from your collarbone to the top of your abdomen, and from your armpit to your cleavage.

Follow a pattern to be sure that you cover the whole breast. You can begin at the nipple, moving in larger and larger circles until you reach the outer edge of the breast. You can also move your fingers up and down vertically, in rows, as if you were mowing a lawn. Be sure to feel all the breast tissue: just beneath your skin with a soft touch and down deeper with a firmer touch. Begin examining each area with a very soft touch, and then increase pressure so that you can feel the deeper tissue, down to your ribcage.

Step 5: Finally, feel your breasts while you are standing or sitting. Many women find that the easiest way to feel their breasts is when their skin is wet and slippery, so they like to do this step in the shower. Cover your entire breast, using the same hand movements described in Step 4.

Re: Breast Self Examination

I give myself breast exams on the regular and I have done so since a teen ever since I had a benign tumor removed.

Re: Ladies, are y'all checking your breasts?

I just realized that I haven't been. And I have a history of cancer.

Just a reminder ladies that you should check your breast, generally while in the shower, for any lumps.

Early detection saves lives!

If I am not mistaking you and I have had the same kind of cancer scare...Kudo's to you for reminding us to check our breasts. This is an area that I have neglected. We have a mamagram van coming to my job next week. I think I will have my 1st mammagram.

Re: Ladies, are y'all checking your breasts?

Unfortunately I never check my breast sadly! I need to start doing it. I was doing it frequently at one point but then I quit.

I've had to have a mammogram. I found a small abnormality and went and got it checked. I am clean but I felt better knowing that I had done something about it.

My mother sent this article to me lately, and repeatedly requested I share with my female friends. So. This is a brief paragraph and a youtube video of a newscast concerning it..

INFLAMMATORY BREAST CANCER Very aggressive breast cancer, not detected by a lump AND NOT detected by regular mammograms..Many doctors think it is just a bug bite or something and by the time you know its not, the chance of survival is very low. Please watch the quick video.....it is worth your time, your daughters, your sisters, your mothers. My friend had this.....she beat the odds ONLY because her mother diedfrom it and she knew what to look for and insisted that she be tested properly.

I certainly approve this post. In November of 2006, the day after Thanksgiving, I lost my aunt (d*mn near my mother) to breast cancer. Let me be clear, family reunion was on the 4th of July and she was in total remission and the picture of health. Four months later, gone. Cancer had spread into her entir rib cage, with regular checkups, just like that. I have no probem saying that I cried immediately when I heard the news and for two days straight.

Ladies, this is definitely not to scare you but just to put in perspective what you put inside your body and do to your body is very, very important. The human body is very strong yet simultaneously, very fragile. Know your history, get a physical yearly and always choose prevention over curing. Don't let it get to the cure stage. It's roulette. Oh yeah, ladyscorpio, excellent post. Health is wealth.
