I believe it's more of a conceptual thing than an gender thing.
When people think of stallion they think of a powerfully built wild horse that can only be tame by the worthy...if at all.
Besides, I don't think any chick is going to be cool with 'Megan the Nightmare.'

it should be a filly. a filly is a female horse used in racing. mare sounds kind of old.
