Mayo traded to Memphis for Kevin Love handles

Memphis also traded the rights to Syracuse forward Donte Greene, the No. 28 pick, in exchange for the rights to Darrell Arthur, who was picked 27th and traded three times. New Orleans dealt his rights to Portland, which then traded him to Houston. The Rockets then traded his rights to Memphis early Friday morning.

:dance::dance::dance::dance::dance::dance::dance::dance::dance::dance:

From the big city. Mayo is from West Virginia. There are any big cities in West Virginia. BTW, neither McCants or Foye are proven. Talented, but not proven. 2 years ago they traded away the rights to Brandon Roy and now they did it again. I like Miller and Love but where is Love gonna play. He's not a center and with Jefferson in Minnesota the PF slot isn't open.

I won't lie, Foye for Roy will be up there with the dumbest trades ever. Roy would be a beast with Al Jefferson and now we have Foye.

As for Love, he will play PF and Jefferson will be moved to center. He play a bit when they needed another big body but he will need to bulk up some and be able to not lose his speed and quickness.

Ya'll don't understand the trade. It was a smart move on Minnesota and I saw it before they even picked. It was a bluff move to get MIA to trade Beasley. Minnesota not only gets the guy they want but free up major cap room for the big free agent list next off-season. They are building for the future, and doing it smart.

Agreed.
This is the 'voice of reason', folks.

In addition...

I think Kevin Love is gonna surprise people.
He kinda reminds me of Larry Bird... minus the deadly shooting range.

- Not a spectacular athlete. Can't jump over a phone book. :smh:
- But plays hard. Grabs rebounds. And has a good Basketball IQ.
- Also has GREAT court vision & passes extremely well for a BIG MAN.

Now if McHale can teach him:

1. how to move without the ball & set SOLID screens...
2. how to 'pick apart' NBA defenses with his passing...
3. to improve his spot-up (mid-range / long-distance) shooting...

Who knows?

I think he might become a VERY SOLID role-player who does all the 'dirty work' & intangibles that most NBA teams need.. while sticking around MUCH longer than most people expect.

This trade is a good look for Memphis. I do not like Kevin Love's game and think that he will be a role player at best in the NBA. O.J. Mayo along with Rudy Gay and Mike Conley can make for a nice mix on the perimeter.

Another dumb ass trade by Kevin McHale!

Not really. It clears out the glut at guard and you get an upgrade at SF with Mike Miller. It benefits BOTH teams.

I wouldnt say Larry Bird, I'm old school so I would say more like a healthy Bill Walton. Larry was a lot more mobile than Love and could get up and down the floor a little better. Also his game not just shooting, was a bit more perimeter oriented.

I think Love will be solid and it didn't make sense to have two combo-guards in the back court. The key to the deal was Miller, not so much Love and Mayo. With that the Wolves came out ok and were able to get rid of some garbage. Actually going to Memphis was good for OJ, now he doesn't have to really change his game a whole lot because he has a try PG. His strength is scoring and to take that away from him makes him mediocore to a point. He should really excel with Conley.

Kevin McHale hasn't done shit to develop talent since he's been at Minnesota. All of their good players came with talent and he had no influence at all. I think what would help Love is to go to Pete Newells big man camp in the off season, and develop a little more stamina and mobility. I do see him as a 15-20 and 8 dude pretty much. Wouldn't have given up OJ for him though.

Kevin McHale see HIMSELF in Love. He is going to work with him personally and mold him in his own image.

This deal will be OK unless Mayo becomes a superstar

The Wolves got a man they liked in Kevin Love, shed some players they didn't want and got a player who'll help in Mike Miller.

By JIM SOUHAN, Star Tribune

The Timberwolves late Thursday found a team willing to take Marko Jaric, Antoine Walker and Greg Buckner. This means there are NBA franchises in even worse shape than the Wolves -- in this case, the Memphis Grizzlies.

It also means the Wolves couldn't find anybody willing to take Rashad McCants.

By shipping Jaric, Walker, Buckner and No. 3 pick O.J. Mayo to Memphis for Kevin Love, Brian Cardinal, Jason Collins and Mike Miller, the Wolves found a guy who might occasionally lose to Mark Madsen in one-on-one -- Cardinal.

This could be a good deal, as long as O.J. Mayo doesn't someday remind us that the Wolves, on June 26, 2008, once traded a true scorer for a guy, in Love, who is best known for his outlet pass.

This means the starting five next year could be Sebastian Telfair, Randy Foye, Miller, Jefferson and Love, with Ryan Gomes playing sixth man and Corey Brewer providing energy and defense.

That's more intriguing than last year's team, and dumping the regrettable Jaric and the irrelevant Walker and Buckner makes this deal interesting.

The only problem is this: The Wolves are notorious for taking the wrong guy in the draft. And trading Mayo, the consensus third-best player in the draft, for Love, who possesses some NBA skills but not necessarily NBA post size, has to scare anyone who has watched Kevin McHale & Company operate.

Getting rid of bad contracts is good. Acquiring Miller is good. Trusting McHale's judgment that Love will be a good NBA player is worrisome.

Give McHale this -- if he hasn't proven he knows how to acquire great players, at least he's getting better at dumping bad ones.

He got the Heat to take Mark Blount and Ricky Davis, two of the worst players in the NBA. Now he's gotten rid of Jaric, an incredibly overpaid player; and Buckner and Walker, who have nothing left.

There are three problems I have with this trade. One, Love does not even have the same body size as Kevin McHale and that is why he could never teach him the same things he knew. Two, the Wolves really have no out-break scorer and I feel Mayo could have filled that need. The third and final one is I think they are hoping a big star is not re-signed next year but who would really want to come to Minnesota rather than a championship-team?

I do know we have at least five picks in next years draft and they end up getting a great player....hopefully for their sake.

What do they want for him?

He had a solid year last year coming back from injury and is still young...come on Mavs *cough*

McHale may be the worst GM in the history of sports when you add up all of his mistakes.

Dumb trade.

You haven't been watching football lately.

Who do you think he was gonna have to guard? 5's?

:lol::lol::lol:

lol bingo. Curry from the Knicks would look like an all-star against Love. Truth be told, Jefferson has the body to be a center but he needs to grow into it and grow a sack of nuts and become at least half the leader KG was. They look pretty sorry with Starbury's wack ass cousin as the floor leader.

Damn, I am not even a fan of the Wolves and I wish they would have kept Mayo. Maybe would have went to a few games.

Every draft there MUST be a great white hope....we know who he is this year..

Kevin Mchale bought into that hype machine :lol::lol:

Let me ask some of you guys who believe that Kevin Love is legit
a question.........Did he ever play an NBA quality 4 or 5 in college and
put up decent numbers???

Kevin Love is going to give you 8 points a game and 5 fouls. Nothing more and nothing less. Add that with Miller and they ask is that combo better than what Mayo is going to give you. Mayo might be a allstar but Love and Miller will never be. It will be a good trade if the Wolves can get a big name free agent. Problem is that will never happen.

Truth be told, he did put up some decent numbers but he also had a solid team around him and was in the Pac-10 where his biggest threat was Brook and Robin.

Granted, Love won't be the spectacular IMPACT player in the NBA that Mayo will be...
but I think he will be ABOVE decent, fresh out the gate.

I expect him to contribute roughly 8-12 pts per game and about 5-8 rbs per game in his Rookie year... based on his college stats.... and depending on how many minutes he sees.

The thing is he could be great but there are things preventing him from that. He lost weight over the summer which I don't understand.
He was in a system that was not built around him or showed him how to be a post player. Another thing is for as light as he is, he is not a big runner and that is what the Wolves are aiming.

Damn..I guess some of you fools don't realize what just went down last night huh? Let's recap shall we.
Minnesota dumped a shit load of money in that trade freeing up more cap room.
With McCants and Foye does the Wolves really need another 6'4 swingman?
Love's game will compliment Jefferson's. Love doesn't have to play with his back to the basket and will get 8- 10ppg from his perimeter shooting and at least 6-8rpg his rookie season. Jefferson will still dominate inside and Minnie gets some front court help. Plus you get an outside shooter in Mike Miller.

Nothing against Mayo but he will probably disappear in Memphis. His potential is high but I have a gut feeling we looking at Sam Bowie II:lol:

Same thing I was thinking. Stats-wise
over 82 games.. he will have a few nights where he 'lights it up' and drops like 17 or 20pts....
and others where he may only drop like 5 pts.

McHale Will Teach Rookie Love Tricks Of The Trade
More Timberwolves News

Jun 30, 2008 3:30 AM EST

Kevin Love has been labeled a young Kevin McHale in the making while in high school and in college, and now he has arrived in Minnesota he will get his opportunity to learn under the master, the Associated Press is reporting.

"He doesn't play like me," McHale said. "Overall, he is much better than I was at 19 as far as shooting and passing are concerned. He has a whole different element to his game that I really like. I could score and defend in the low-post but was more of specialty player overall."

Love hopes McHale will help him in improving his footwork and post moves.

"I was telling my agent, 'Man, I wish I could end up in Minnesota,' because this is where I wanted to be," Love said during a news conference Friday. McHale "mentioned (me) dancing on the ceiling, but it was a little bit more than that. I was so happy to be here."

Love's deep understanding of the game will allow McHale to teach him more advanced tricks that would go lost on a less savvy player.

"It takes months to get good at these things, but we're going to go really slow and show him little things, like how to get the ball in better position," McHale says. "It will be interesting to see how quick of a learner he is."

All I got to say is if McHale teachs all and Love listens and learns before doing, he could be a bad ass player in a few years. I noticed in few games that he isn't afraid of contact and knows how to shoot. He just needs to learn to master his "skills" and McHale can bring the best out of him.
