WIKI -

Stones Throw is home to Madlib and many of his projects: Madvillain, Jaylib, Yesterdays New Quintet, Quasimoto, Sound Directions and Lootpack. Other notable artists on the Stones Throw's past and present roster include Gary Wilson, The Turntablist (aka DJ Babu), Rob Swift, Rasco, Breakestra, Oh No, Dudley Perkins, J Dilla (aka Jay Dee), Koushik and James Pants. J Dilla's final album during his lifetime, Donuts, was released by Stones Throw in February 2006.

In 2006 the label announced new signings Aloe Blacc, J Rocc, Roc C, Cue, and Georgia Anne Muldrow, Mayer Hawthorne and an upcoming compilation of new material including Madvillain for the Adult Swim network. Jeff Jank is the designer of a great deal of the album covers on the Stones Throw label.

"Mayer Hawthorne (born Andrew Mayer Cohen[1][2] in 1978 or 1979[4]) is a singer, producer, songwriter, arranger, audio engineer, DJ, rapper and multi-instrumentalist[1][3][4] based in Los Angeles, California, USA[1]. The stage name "Mayer Hawthorne" is a combination of Cohen's real middle name (Mayer) and the name of the street he grew up on in Michigan (Hawthorne Rd).[2] "Mayer Hawthorne and The County" is a name Cohen often uses when performing or recording as Mayer Hawthorne with other artists. In Cohen's words, "The County" is basically anyone who plays an instrument or sings on his album. It’s also his band when he performs live.[3] Cohen also performs and records Hip Hop music under the stage name "Haircut", sometimes as part of the groups "Now On".

" & Athletic Mic League.[3]

Born and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA,[1][4] Hawthorne moved to Los Angeles after being signed to LA based Stones Throw Records by label head Peanut Butter Wolf.[1][4]

Mayer Hawthorne draws influence from the music of Curtis Mayfield , Isaac Hayes, Leroy Hutson, Mike Terry, Barry White, Smokey Robinson and the legendary songwriting and production trio of Lamont Dozier, Brian Holland, and Edward Holland, Jr. (known collectively as Holland–Dozier–Holland).[1][4]

His debut single, Just Ain't Gonna Work Out/When I Said Goodbye, was released on a red heart-shaped 7" record on Stones Throw Records on November 4, 2008.[5] His second single Maybe So, Maybe No/I Wish It Would Rain was released on a 12" record on Stones Throw Records on April 19, 2009.[6] His debut album, A Strange Arrangement was released on CD and LP on Stones Throw Records on September 8, 2009.[7]

In July 2009, Hawthorne was featured on the cover of the third anniversary issue of Beyond Race Magazine (BRM).[8]

The song Just Ain't Gonna Work Out was chosen as the Starbucks iTunes Pick of the Week for October 13, 2009.[9]

The song When I Said Goodbye features in the Kanye West-Spike Jonze short film We Were Once A Fairytale."

Thanks, C'.

Yeah ... I was looking around on Google ... and all the Rapidshare / Depositfiles / Megaupload / Zshare links were gone for the album.

I got it on Albumhunt last night for the Ipod pre-gym. Good shit.

The album is nice.

How's his buzz out there in Cali'? Is he getting good rotation or attention?

Sounds like he'll get some push to his career per the Starbucks tag.

This dude is actually good! Props to the OP.

Damn, that shit is hot, props.:yes:

 Been waiting on this joint!!!!

I really like that song

Ok...u got me....I'll check this album out

:eek::dance::dance::dance:

That whiteboy can sang!

yoooooooooooooo, that not gonna work out cut is the shit.... thats what you play to let her know its a wrap! the remix that i have from ep# 13 of te gordon gartrell show it the shit! didnt know dude was white & the killa part is ........ his sound is like someone from way back......... good shit!!!!!!!!!!!!

after a couple of listens, this shit is fukin fire. that pseudo-Motown throwback soul shit really works on this joint.

The EAR on this mofo:eek:

See if you can catch the rearranged bass lines, piano parts, etc from classic songs.

That joint is tight he reminds me of the manhattans tenor

Alotta links gettin deleted.....Alotta music blogs and forums starting to disappear too!!......:smh: Guess these lames trying to really crack down now!

Mayer Hawthorne is dope btw!

Yo, Stones Throw is notorious for this shit. Its like they have a team of niggas to go get shit taken down...Seriously. Every fuckin dilla, madlib, etc album is down within hours.

Sad thing is no one would know who this cat was if they didnt download his shit. I mean really, a young white dude putting out some soul (playing and arranging by himself)? I woulda thought it was a joke until I dl'd the shit.

Anyways, yea, heard the album a while back. He's solid. Never heard the album talked about much other than a few blogs and shit.

:lol: I live in Atlanta. Haven't heard this on any stations here, but then again I rarely listen to the radio.

A wack wigger trying to use 60's soul as a gimmick to get known. His voice sucks. Sounds like a high pitched fake falsetto cracka imitating Smokey Robinson.

Really, really good musician. I really enjoy his music. With so much of the crap music out today, you really appreciate hearing great music like this.

Anyways, yea, heard the album a while back. He's solid. Never heard the album talked about much other than a few blogs and shit.

It only just officially came out (though some of the tracks have been floating around for a year). Got reviewed (positively) in Rolling Stone this week.

He's still better than 99% of the garbage popular today:dunno:

He's not popular though, nobody knows who the fuck he is, and this was done 50 years ago. It's typical that Blacks are always mesmerized by a cracka mimicking black music that has been done before..

He's pretty dope.People are scared of something different and this dude is.His music is outside of the box compared to normal standards these days. He's probably more talented than 80% of black dudes in the industry right now who are trying to do the same thing. And his vids are ALWAYS dope.

Peace.

Man...I just finished giving this CD a listen and boy was I mad. The whole CD sounds like he just resung a bunch of old music. I can' but feel like all this is stolen...

The only "original" tune is the maybe so song, I'm diggin' that one.

Yeah "Maybe So Maybe No" is a dope song/video.

I think what he's got working for him right now is the recent buzz from STARBUCKS/ROLLING STONE and the fact that the videos that are uploaded on YOUTUBE are all of excellent HD quality. Really helps when people are trying to get a look at a new artist or group. Seems like alot of people have been checking the content too ... per the stats:

To a certain degree all music is stolen but your critique is fair. I kinda feel bad I dig this more that Rapheal Sadique's try on this, but you like what you like. I'm feeling this cause it has a gritty hip-hop feel instead of a neo soul feel.

I feel the same way about this album like the first time I heard Gnarls Barkley.

For me ... the fact that he's got a diverse base is what made me think - "alright, this cat ain't some random whiteboy" ... he's actually got a variety of skills overall. I think at first glance people are expecting him to be some older version of ASHER ROTH, then they hear him and they either:

A) Dig the sound
B) Still don't like what he's all about
C) Aren't sure what to make of homie's overall approach
