Maxtor 300GB 320GB? Ultra DMA/100 Hard Drive $60 shipped at Frys.com

I would jump on this if it was a Seagate. I don't trust Maxtor.
Maybe if they carried the 3 year warranty like Seagate does

LOL....

Maxtor drives a work great. I have owned like 4 over the past 8 years. with no problems. They were used mostly audio recording which got very consistent reading and writing to/from the drives.......ALL DAY EVERY DAY. for the most part.

also... Seagate now owns(bought) Maxtor.

and word of advice. Dont buy those big ass drives. It makes you lazy at backing up your shit. So IF(when) it crashes....just means much more shit you will lose in the process. Try two smaller drives.

backups is just a matter of habit...regardless of drive sizes.

get what works for you, don't be afraid of large sizes

What's the difference between IDE and SATA?

transfer speeds. SATA is faster than IDE(a.k.a. ATA) but SATA-2 is faster than SATA. But your mother board must support SATA/SATA-2 or your can add a SATA adapter card.

depending on what you are doing with your computer.....you might not benefit from the extra speed. Most users dont need the latest greatest shit....but the saleperson will make you think you do.

True dat.

So if Seagate bought Maxtor, are Maxtor drives now under 3 year
warranty??

I am not rich.. I struggle from paycheck to paycheck. I can only
afford to buy ONE drive. That drive HAS to be on point. No mistakes

i have seagate internals, maxtor externals for backup...you'll be ok

if a drive is going to fail, it's going to fail either very early (like when you get it installed, which would still be under warranty)...or very late in life (a few years...by that time 500's will be history anyway)

a couple years ago we thought we were ballin if we had 80gb drives  technology moves fast

You'll have to double check on the warranty.
also check out www.newegg.com for computer parts.

and whenever I buy online, I find what I need from searching the website and than call the company to place the order. This lets me ask last minute questions if needed. if under warranty when it fails....they will only replace the drive, not the info you had on the drive.

I have seem good drives fail out of the blue. new drives, fairly used, and old drives......10% full to 80% full. I have seen folks cry(tears) because they lost half their album. So it kinda like flipping a coin. But in what I do, drives get much more abuse.

co-sign on newegg...i ordered a docking station for my apple laptop a week ago (from another online store) and then remembered newegg...checked their site...the same dock at newegg is $40 less but the other company had already shipped mine out....#^%^&$&!!!

good prices, right here in california...

best: they have a discussion section so you can see other users comments on whatever you are considering buying...that clears up a lot of questions

Thanks for the tips. I've been buying from Newegg for years.

Am trying to do a build. Have been putting pieces together since
2005 for this. I have one Seagate 320GB HD and I want another
320 to couple with it (so I don't have to buy any more space for
a LONG time (already have 2 160GB externals)

Question is: Can you couple two different brands together like that?
Or rather, SHOULD you couple two different brands together. Seems
to me that if you are going to have a master and slave drive, they
should be compatable

I already know that the drives shouldn't be too loipsided as far as
sizes go or it will slow down the processing speed

Seagates have a 5 year warranty.
That's why I ONLY fucks with Seagate. I'd rather pay a little more for the 5 year warranty. Their industry leading 5 year warranty also makes me believe that Seagate believes in their hard drives. So I just roll with that.
Cause data loss makes you wanna cry! For real!

This Maxtor has a 3 year warranty.
No bad for storing porn though! :D

Well... drives should all work together without problems. I myself, or many folks I've worked with have never had a problem with different brands in one computer. (mac or pc). But if I was buying two new drives, I would try to get the same brand.

Some do run a tiny bit better than other. Even different models of the same brand. But that's if you need that extra bit of speed. You can do some reading on www.barefeats.com
Rob's been doing tests for a long time.

Right. Bottom line is that they have longer warranties that the rest.
And that's what I want as well. If they have bought out Maxtor, then
any Maxtor product should be covered under THEIR warranty

and I wouldn't buy this product, until I knew for sure (meaning I have
it in writing from the manufacturer)

i like my seagate SATA'S, but....they (the 500's) run very hot...my rig was sounding like a 747 taking off whenever the hd's were being accessed

i ended up putting another fan in my computer case

the externals are also in enclosures with fans

no such issues with maxtor 500's so far...

RS...I blame you for all this brotha :D with all that heat you drop in the music threads we have to keep upgrading...maxtor and seagate should be shipping you free hard drives on the regular just on gp

I've had 3 different brand name hard drives in my computer at the same time without any problems.

I have also had hard drives in my computer that were way lopsided in size without any problems.

I was using a 4.7GB, a 45GB, and a 160GB in my computer at the same time without any noticeable slowdowns at all.

Haha. I wish. I could use it. Especially now that I've "discovered"
lossless. Also, if I ever get that build up and running, I plan on doing
the same shit with movies as well.

I might try this Maxtor, if I can get that 5 year warranty. The Seagate
costs about 40 dollars more. I'd like to get that one if I can

Pissy Drunk:
I don't wanna chance it. Got that piece of info from a technician
that has been doing builds for years. If I can get two with the same
amount of GB, would rather do it that way

man....I'm surprised that folks are stuck on the warranty length so much.

All they gonna do is send you another harddrive which still doesnt come close to being worth the time and information you put into the harddrive. especially if you only paid like $60 for it in the first place. Hell, the O.S. costs much more than that by itself.

Just stay with the top brands and you show be ok for the most part.

:D no disrespect meant.

and BTW....i still have an old ass 500mb hard drive. of coarse I;m not using it, but it does work.

LOL...I used $60 just to list a price. it wasnt aimed at you but $60 is a good deal if you ask me. I've never paid less than $89 for a drive. But this was before My boy linked me to newegg

Maxtor's are garbage. The only crash I ever had was when I bought one of thier shits. Go to Walmart and Grab a Western Digital 350GB drive for a bill and call it a day.
