“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically... Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education.” - Martin Luther King, Jr.

Of course he was having extramarital affairs.

Hoover had the FBI follow him and record the activities. Pictures all that good stuff. It's all in the FBI files.

Yeah I know. Martin was trying another form of integration before civil rights were passed.

Whats crazy is the fact that they were trying to find some criminal activity and only found that. Then went to the papers and they wouldn't print it. If that was now, that shit would have been on BET first!:smh::smh:

Love how people try to bring up his affairs. So what? The man's ideas were light years ahead of their time. If you hate what Dr. MLK tried to do for ALL races, you should trade your car in for a short bus cause your retarded.......Just my 2 cents. Not directed at anyone. No disrespect, No need for E-Thuggin.

So his marital affairs outweighs his achievements?

Hell naw. To me marital affairs seem to be a staple of every great mans lifetime. Save a few. Doesn't mean he's any less of a great man in my eyes.

Real talk. :smh: Would've destroyed his credibility.

But why didn't the papers want to print it?

Liberal tilted newpapers had gotten a bit shafted during the McCarthy trials (sweeping Communist accusations and fears) and had basically distrusted or outright refused to print shit coming from certain parts of the government (CIA/FBI/etc. )

unfortunately this is true. you have to no look no further than this thread to see posters who who post his shortcomings with glee

How exactly did they get shafted; accuse people of bieng commies that turned out tobe mis-information from their sources?

Interesting. Seems like if it hadn't been for communism our whole perception of MLK could have been shaped differently had that newspaper printed that story.

No, the FBI was looking for stone-cold evidence of "dirt," which they already knew was there. They tried to blackmail him to quit his civil rights activities (and/or kill himself) by exposing the tapes to his wife. They failed in that regard, as Coretta didn't react the way they expected her to. (But he never should have given them that opening, nor betrayed his wife.)

The difference here is that MLK NEVER preached sexual morality or any of the other bullshit that today's hypocritical preachers preach. His infidelities, while distasteful and careless, didn't betray the CAUSE. He never pretended to be "holier than thou." Too smart for that (unlike the typical bumpkin preacher, white or black).

I wouldn't say our perception of him would be any different because he wasn't fighting for sexual rights or conservatism, he was fighting for equal rights and an end to discrimination.

I guess that would also include the right to get some pussy on the side and not discriminate against some free pussy just because he was married. :D

Hold one troop.
No one FORCED him to have sex with other women.
And it's not inappropriate to talk about it. I accept him for both his good and bad.
I think its inappropriate and irrelevant to discuss it in this context. You just hijacked a MLK thread talking about useles bullshit. I just think some shit should be sacred and respected. And on this day, and a thread of this nature, i think its in poor taste to bring that shit up. I also dont think your acceptance is needed bro. And in terms of good vs bad, thats a subjective issue. But if you consider that his "bad" then it doesnt even register in terms of comparitive purposes for what is understand and acknowledged as his "good". The shit just serves no purpose bro.

For the record, Ralph Abernanthy has shot down the rumors that he was infatuated with white women writing that he didn't even find them attractive...

I though Ralp subsantiated that Martin was having affairs.

But let's get back on topic from being sidetracked.

Lemme say this. I've always been one for critical thinking and have said to myself and plenty people this is what the educational system is lacking. They don't stress critical thinking enough. That's why I made this thread after searching for MLK quotes this one struck a chord.

Education today, to me is just a take in and regurgitate out the what the teacher says without actually learning or understanding the course work fully. It's all on a one track mind. Students don't challenge the school system anymore at all they just accept what's taught to them as fact. Imagine if students had the same passion about college as that loud mouth negro Sara-Seti challenging and raising hell with professors  That's what educational systems needs imo. That rebliousness, is gone in school and school is one of the last basins of free-speech.

I've learned a lot of black history on this board they don't teach in college courses students should be trying to re-writing the text books. Teachers feel free to chime in.

Rumor: King had an obsession with white prostitutes and used church funds for drunken parties-Denied!

One of King's closest associates addressed rumors about King's sexual activities in his 1989 book, "And the Walls Came Tumbling Down."
He said that King did have a weakness for women and engaged in extramarital affairs.
He denied reports that he was attracted to white women and said he never knew of King to be involved with a white woman.
As a part of its surveillance activities, the FBI did document some sexual encounters involving Martin Luther King.
We've not found any substantiation about prostitues, sex parties or church funds being used for such.

I agree with what is written here but we can see what appeals to most people... So I felt it was worth clearing up what is fact and what is unsubstantiated.

Definitely agree (and wish) education is/should be more about critical thinking than regurgitation though... This could serve as a testament to that, actually. How many people have bothered to search for valid sources (since they care so much) and how many just regurgitate what is commonly said???

(For the record, before somebody tries to be a wise ass with me, I've seen this other places than the website I posted and it comes directly from a book by Abernathy...)
