Marquez wants tune-up bout, then Peterson

After losing a controversial majority decision against his great rival Manny Pacquiao, Mexican champion Juan Manuel Marquez is now looking for a tune-up fight in his hometown of Mexico City in March.

Following the tune-up match, Marquez will then set his sights on a fourth title belt in as many weight classes by targeting American boxer Lamont Peterson.

"We want Lamont Peterson. We want to fight in Mexico first, and that would mean a lot in Mexico for him to fight in his home country, before his fans," Marquez's manager, Fernando Beltran, told RingTV.com.

"Right after that, we really want to go and fight Lamont Peterson," he added.

Beltran said they still want to pursue another fight against Pacquiao, but it will come after the tune-up and the Peterson bout.

Marquez and Peterson are both included in the short-list of potential Pacquiao opponents, along with Timothy Bradley Jr. and Miguel Cotto. But recent reports have indicated that Pacquiao may be leaning towards a rematch against the Puerto Rican Cotto after negotiations for a mega-fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. fell through once more.

Marquez told RingTV that he wants to fight Pacquiao for the fourth time, but if neither he nor Peterson is chosen as the Filipino boxer's next opponent, he will then take a tune-up bout before challenging Peterson at the junior welterweight division.

"I would like a fight with Lamont Peterson for my fourth title.. Lamont Peterson is a great fighter because he won over Amir Khan, who is another good fighter," Marquez said.

If Marquez ends up defeating Peterson for a junior welterweight belt, he becomes only the third Mexican boxer to win four championships in four different divisions.

Peterson, meanwhile, became the new IBF and WBA junior welterweight champion after defeating Khan last December in a controversial match.

Beltran said Peterson will present a great stylistic match-up for Marquez.

"I think that Peterson is a very good fighter who stays in front of you. He throws a lot of punches and he's a very experienced guy. Styles make fights, and I really think that it will be really tremendous match-up," he said.

Arum told RingTV that he will discuss the potential Marquez-Peterson clash with the fighters' managers once everything is settled for Pacquiao's next fight.

"I want to make it plain that I haven't talked to Marquez about it, and I haven't talked to (Peterson's manager) Barry Hunter about it. But I think that it would be a tremendous fight," he said.

"I would love to make that match if one of them is not selected to fight Manny," Arum added.

Yep. If I were him and I beat Peterson, I'd target Bradley or Khan next but I'd stay away from Maidana.

Shit Morales survived and won by a point imo, but by run through I meant beat the guys in the running for the best not fight every motherfucker at 140.

That's why I'd stay away from Maidana. Dude has too much power and is too tough a fight for the reward, not that I think Marquez would lose. I'd fight Peterson, Bradley or Khan. Oh and maybe Morales in Mexico, that fight could still make some cake.

Yeah... really Marquez has nothing to prove anymore. I actually thought he was done after the Pac fight even though they stole it from him it was a high note to go out on because people got to see what a master he is at the sport.

Yep.

I think he can take Maidana but at this point of his career and life, why fight such a dangerous opponent when there's equal or better money with other guys like Bradley or khan (if/after he beats Peterson).
And I think him and Morales could put 50k in a Mexican soccer stadium still.

If a motherfucker eats Pac's punches better than Shane, I don't think Maidana can hurt him and Maidana isn't good enough to land that much on Marquez unless Marquez wants to go to war which is always a possibility. In all honesty if Juan had slowed down like Morales I would think Maidana would be dangerous, but really Maidana doesn't derserve a shot unless he he gets a real impressive win. I'm mean shit he is fighting Alexander for a reason...

There is that. Who has he beaten to earn a fight with a bonafide legend like JMM?

No one. Almost beating Khan doesn't count.

'zactly. One thing I think UFC has going for it that boxing needs (though both sports have different infrastructures) is when one guy beats another guy in a high profile fight, the winner either gets a title shot or at least is in line. That's why I liked that Mayweather fought Ortiz since Ortiz had beaten the only other noteworthy welterweight champion not named Pacquiao. For Maidana to get some more big fights, he needs to beat Alexander before he even gets mentioned in fighting any real names.

Personally, I think once Marcos brings the pressure, Alexander is going to fold up like a beach chair.

Funny thing is I didn't think Ortiz deserved his shot at Berto not that he didn't have the skills and abilities, but he made his mark anyway.

What I hate is pointless mandatories with guys that have no heat at all, no name rec, no good wins nor just coming off plan good close fights no matter which way it swung.

I see that too, but you never know what will happen with Maidana's lack of skill. Some times on paper it looks like he'll run through a guy, but in the fight he can't land clean shots with his loopy punches.

That's his history. He needs to show something, even if he loses, in this fight or he becomes a permanent opponent that has to fight in up and coming guys hometowns.

Now that I think about it, he really didn't but welterweight is so thin, just by becoming one, he became a contender. Losing to Berto would have really been the end for him.

It's one thing if the guy is beating real opponents and earns that mandatory spot but when it's more about the politics then I'm against it.
