Khan-Peterson on April 16, Could Lead To Khan-Marquez

By Lem Satterfield

According to Richard Schaefer, CEO for Golden Boy Promotions, negotiations are still ongoing to finalize an opponent for Amir Khan's next defense of the WBA junior welterweight title. The return of Khan (24-1, 17KOs) has been set for April 16 in the United Kingdom. The name that continues to pop up is Lamont Peterson, who fought to a draw with Victor Ortiz in the December co-feature to Khan's victory over Marcos Maidana in Las Vegas.

"We are looking at that [Khan] and working on that as well, and the date is set on his return for April 16. We are going to be working on the financial situation and the opponent and so on," said Schaefer. "But the Khan fight will definitely be in the United Kingdom. There are different names that are being discussed, and one of the names which has been discussed is Lamont Peterson."

Khan's next fight could be a lead-in to a potential battle with WBA/WBO lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez (51-6, 35KOs). Golden Boy's head matchmaker Eric Gomez was informed by Marquez that he's interested in moving up to junior welterweight to challenge someone like Khan. Golden Boy had tried to make the fight in early 2010, but couldn't reach a deal between the two fighters.

Marquez is scheduled to return on April 9, a week before Khan enters the ring, and the two back to back HBO televised fights could set up a fall meeting between the two stars.

"Marquez has expressed some interest in going up to 140 and perhaps maybe fighting Amir Khan," said Gomez. "Amir Khan is of interest, and we have tried making that fight before. So there is some interest."

Erik Morales Wants Marquez Fight at The Lightweight Limit

By Jose Antonio Soriano, notifight.com

José “Olivaritos” Morales, father and coach of Erik "Terrible" Morales, considered that 2010 was very "positive" for his son's return to boxing. This year, Morales will aim to become the first Mexican to win four world titles in four weight divisions. Morales wants to win that fourth title at lightweight. Talks are ongoing with WBA/WBC champion Juan Manuel Marquez for an April 16 meeting.

"The last fight against the Dominican Francisco Lorenzo was complicated. But we got the better of him. Erik's experience helped him very much to get the win," he explained. "My son is 34 and hopefully his body will still continue to respond. Erik has fought the best, has experience and technique. The three fights he did in his return were good, we started from welterweight against Nicaraguan Jose Alfaro. Then we went lower to 140 pounds to face Willie Limond where he won the WBC silver belt, and finally against Lorenzo in Tijuana. "

Erik "Terrible" Morales wants to make history in boxing.

"This year, we want my son win his fourth world title and leave a deeper mark on the world and Mexican boxing. He is talking with two names to fights for their world titles, one of them is Juan Manuel Marquez and the other I can not remember his name. The world title bout will be at lightweight, so training will be much stronger, harder."

Marquez vs Morales is Still in Play, April 9 in Las Vegas

By Lem Satterfield

WBA and WBO lightweight titlist Juan Manuel Marquez may have lost out on a third bout with eight-division king, Manny Pacquiao, but the 37-year-old, three-division champion still has plenty of options, according to Golden Boy Promotions head matchmaker, Eric Gomez.

"We'll be getting together some time this month with Marquez. We'll go over numbers and go over the opponents," said Gomez.

Marquez will return in April 9 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. One of the main opponents being considered is former three division champion Erik "El Terrible" Morales. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer would like to get the fight done in the next couple of days.

"We are going to see if we can get that fight done," said Schaefer of Marquez-Morales. "That's one of the fights that we will be working on in the next couple of days and weeks."

Morales is not the only option for Marquez. Gomez is talking to other possible opponents, but says a Marquez-Morales fight is a very big deal among Mexican fight fans.

"We feel that Marquez-Morales would be a big seller in the Mexican community, and it's a fight that the Mexican community has always wanted but it was never done," said Gomez. "Marquez wants to fight in Las Vegas, so there is a good possibility that it will be in Las Vegas either in March or April around there."

I'd favor Marquez in any of those matches. Especially against Morales, I think he'd prolly ko dude. I'd hate to see El Terrible go out like that.
JMM would have a tougher fight with Khan but his experience and uppercut would start to show late in the fight. Where Maidana just didn't have the skill to close the show, I believe Marquez could. Khan isn't ready for the true elite yet.

Khan isn't ready for the true elite yet.

Khan still has problems with his footwork and IQ (and that is where Marquez could hurt him). He has some good handspeed that could give Marquez problems early in the fight though.

uh so did diaz :smh:

I didnt say Khan would win. I would actually easily pick Marquez. However, I am saying that Khan could definitely make Marquez work early in the fight when he is still fresh. However, Khan doesnt really have great boxing IQ as he gets hit repeatedly with the same punches (overhand rights and uppercuts) and Marquez would break him down. However, Khan could make the first 6-7 rounds competitive.

 to both posts. I have nothing to add. Marquez may not get Pacquiao but he's not going to go without in 2011.

It's funny some of these "experts" are saying Floyd wants Manny to take a "L" or get old before he will fight him, but have little to say about what Pac is doing with Marquez. Pac wants Marquez to be retired and never have to fight him. If Marquez loses to anyone... Manny can say he is finished and there is no need to fight. If Marquez keeps going and winning... Manny will say he has to beat this person or that person at this weight or that weight and it can keep going forever.

I just read this incredible (not in a good way) column on Yahoo! from some guy who strongly against a third fight because he fears for JMM's safety supposedly. I'll post it a little later.

If Marquez Vs. Pacquiao III is barbage , what’s a compelling fight for Pacquiao after Mosley?
By Granville Ampong, Yahoo! Contributor Network

This article was produced by a Yahoo! Sports user. Submit a story.

Casual talk from Hollywood, California - Manny Pacquiao versus Shane Mosley would just be more intriguing than just having the Chilango take another shot at the Filipino phenom. And I tell you Marquez vs. Pacquiao III is not just negligible, but, to some, it's garbage!

Yes, it's garbage!

Pacquiao, 32, the eight-division world champion and the first boxer in history to win ten world titles in eight different weight divisions, has nothing to prove against Juan Manuel Marquez who has not truly traveled the same treacherous path that he has had in his lifetime as a professional boxer. And why should Pacquiao stoop down to the level of Marquez when he has already gone up far above than any boxer at his current weight class?

And let me tell you this: Any mercenary writer who continues to blow blindly upon the unlighted wick of his candle would only find his lips dried up by the pressure of nothingness.

Marquez Vs. Pacquiao III is garbage!

Rather, it's certainly not indispensable! And pushing for a Marquez vs. Pacquiao trilogy somehow is just potentially giving more business to a funeral home in this time of economic meltdown.
For the sake of sanity, don't get Marquez, 37, killed in the ring this time. Monstrous punishments would just be too much for Marquez to bear if ever such third encounter will happen. Boxing is not about killing someone in the ring. It should not be an avenue to end one's life for the sake of money and others' overriding interests. The Pacquiao who fought Marquez in 2004 and in 2008, whereby the first encounter was adjudged as a draw and the second a split decision in favor of Filipino phenom, was just the wild one who only relied on his own power and was thought by many as just a one dimensional fighter.

Now, Pacquiao is a complete fighter and too powerful and even too slick a ringmaster, beating bigger guys who are not in the comfort zone of Marquez,. And Pacquiao insurmountably did his trek upstairs by increments of three titles (WBC lightweight title, WBO welterweight title and WBC light middleweight title) since his rise from the super featherweight, which Marquez never ever did. When Pacquiao ruled out a third clash with Marquez, saying, "I don't think so. This business is over.", Marquez has since suffered tremendous punishments even in the hands of Juan Diaz, most especially in their second fight, despite winning from their two bouts. Forget about his fight against the B minus fighter Michael Katsidis. Though his performance was impressive, it shone with less jewels. Another, his performance against the less powerful Floyd Mayweather, Jr. was even one of a lackluster. All these, Pacquiao should not stoop down to Marquez level.

And so disillusionment and disenchantment should be had on Marquez's marketing strategist in view of not getting a fair consideration for a trilogy with Pacquiao. It's like attempting to perfect a contract for another match between Pacquiao and Marquez is borne out of revulsion than just for pure sport and entertainment. And of course, the jealousy ride and exhorbitant demand for more money in favor of Marquez and his cohorts are both rather detestable.

I tell you: What is not garbage is a potential compelling fight for Pacquiao against Sergio Martinez at 154 before they both hang up their respective gloves?

I insist!

Wow.

Very much so...That user should be banned from posting on Yahoo Sports. The stuff on there was borderline crazy.

Marquez's Options: Morales, Khan, Guerrero, Maidana

By Rick Reeno

WBO/WBA lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez (52-5, 38KOs) has a lot of options on the table. The three division champion is scheduled to sit down with Golden Boy Promotions in the next few days to discuss his next fight, which is tentative for April 9 in Las Vegas.

Among the possibilities - fellow three division champion Erik Morales (51-6, 35KOs), WBA junior welterweight champion Amir Khan (24-1, 17KOs), former champion Robert Guerrero (28-1, 18KOs) and even Marcos Maidana (29-2, 27KOs).

BoxingScene.com spoke with Eric Gomez, head matchmaker for Golden Boy, who explained the current situation with Marquez and the numerous possibilities for the Mexican boxer's April ring return.

Among the possibilities is the Mexican grudge match with Morales. The potential fight has received a lot of coverage in the Mexican media. There is some animosity between the two fighters from when they were stablemates under the Top Rank promotional banner.

"I think that there is a good chance that the Morales fight can happen. Morales is just waiting for us to make him an offer. He really wants the fight. He says that he's always wanted to fight Marquez, and that he never ducked him. Marquez says that he was ducking him. So there are some storylines there and some animosity from the past," Gomez told BoxingScene.com.

Morales is a good possibility but far from the only option, says Gomez. Marquez wants to discuss all of the possible fights on the table, and which option presents the most money.

"Basically, Marquez wants to sit down and go over numbers to see what's the most profitable fight. At this point in his career, he wants to make the big money. It's a matter of getting together with him and sitting down with him and seeing what he wants," Gomez said.

"He made a comment the other day that a Maidana fight would be very exciting. I don't know if he was fooling around or what, but he said 'that would be a fun fight.'"

Marquez has made a clear indication that he wants to move up to junior welterweight to pursue a fourth title. The Mexican star is very interested in challenging Khan for his WBA belt. Khan, who is scheduled to fight in England on April 16 and doesn't have a set opponent, is interested in facing Marquez.

"We have most of the 140-pounders. We're going to present all of the guys. Guerrero would love to fight him. Morales would love to fight him. Khan is interested in fighting him. And I'm sure Maidana would love to fight him. We're going to get together with him and go over all of that stuff. He's supposed to come in within a week or something like that," Gomez said.

Juan Manuel Marquez Rips Pacquiao, Jabs at Erik Morales

By Jhonny Gonzalez

WBA/WBO lightweight champion "Dinamita" Juan Manuel Marquez says that he is not going to sit back and stay quiet while lies are being spread. Marquez is angry with some of the information passed along with the recent negotiations to make a third fight with Manny Pacquiao. Pacquiao's promoter Top Rank have said the Mexican star overpriced himself and because of his demands they were forced to look elsewhere. Pacquiao is going to defend his WBO welterweight title against Shane Mosley on May 7 in Las Vegas.

Marquez is claiming that Pacquiao and Top Rank wanted nothing to do with him and continued to place demand after demand on the table.

"We accepted everything they put on the table, including the weight, and then they were requesting that Golden Boy Promotions stays away from the negotiations. All of their conditions were accepted, but they refused. It was one thing after another....nothing but excuses," Marquez said.

Golden Boy is trying to make a fight between Marquez and former champion Erik Morales on April 9. Marquez remembers when Morales was on top of the world and claims "El Terrible" refused to give him an opportunity. Marquez smiles because the situation is now on the other foot.

"Morales, he had his chance when I wanted it and right now I'm going to see if he deserves a chance. This is the wheel of fortune and he will get a turn on the wheel of fortune. Erik, when he was on top, he would not fight me and right now the situation is the opposite. Let's see the offer," Marquez said.

Marquez states that he's scheduled a meeting with Golden Boy on January 20 to negotiate the offer to face Morales.

That sounds about right. What else is new with team Pacquiao. Like wanting to make Floyd pay 10mil for every pound over the limit.

Erik Morales Fires Back at Marquez: You're in The Past

By Jhonny Gonzalez

Former three division champion Erik Morales has replied to the recent comments that where made by WBA/WBO lightweight champion "Dinamita" Juan Manuel Marquez. Golden Boy is trying to make a fight between Marquez and Morales on April 9 in Las Vegas. Marquez remembers when Morales was on top of the world and claims "El Terrible" refused to give him an opportunity. Marquez smiles because the situation is now on the other foot.

Erik, when he was on top, he would not fight me and right now the situation is the opposite. Let's see the offer," Marquez said.

Morales says Marquez is "living in the past" by always bringing up what happened many years ago when both of them were under the same promoter. He also tells Marquez to let go of his continued obsession for a third fight with Pacquiao. Morales, the last man to beat Pacquiao, by decision in 2005, feels that he's got a bigger claim to a Pacquiao rematch than Marquez.

"To live the past is wrong. If I began to cry and get angry over everything that happened in the past, I am going to be stupid or crazy. The things Juan says is wrong, because I always fought whoever they put in front of me. And also many of the opponents were selected for me by Top Rank. At the end of the day this is more than just a sport, but a business, and [Bob] Arum always secured the opponent who brought the most money," Morales said.

"It's a shame that Marquez is living in the past, and for him to say that he deserves the opportunity against Pacquiao. Regarding that matter, I can tell you that I have more merit [for a rematch], because I had the opportunity, the pleasure, the happiness, and the ability to have my hards raised in a fight with Pacquiao and he did not."

:lol::lol::lol: Morales is saying some cold shit right here

Marquez: If Morales Offer Isn't Good, I'm Going To 140

By Jhonny Gonzalez

If the money presented falls short of his expectations, WBA/WBO lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez will move up to junior welterweight to chase a fourth title. Golden Boy Promotions is trying to make a fight between Marquez and Erik Morales for April 9 in Las Vegas. During a charity event with the WBO in Mexico, Marquez said he was willing to face Morales but only under the right financial conditions.

"Let's wait and see what happens with Golden Boy, I have a meeting with them on the 20th of this month. Regarding that fight, we have to first talk with [Golden Boy President] Oscar de la Hoya and then make a decision as to whether or not we will face [Morales]. We are fighters and we'll face anyone, as I've done throughout my career. If there is a good purse, I'll accept, otherwise I would go up to junior welterweight and look for a fourth world title," Marquez told Osiris Cruz.

Morales should have kept his mouth shut. The version of Manny that he beat was a one fisted fighter. Does he forgot that he was utterly destroyed in the next 2 fights. Had Manny been boxing's poster boy at the time, 6 years ago, Morales would have gotten robbed as badly as Marquez was in his 2 fights with Pacman. Fuck this fight anyway. Honestly I want to remember El Terrible the way he was, which is why I haven't watched any of his comeback fights. I won't pay to watch Marquez end his career a second time. If I'm Marquez I go up to 140 and challenge Victor Ortiz to get my feet wet at that weight.

I agree but only think Morales is apart of the symbolism that Marquez is using to convince causal fans that a third fight needs to be made.

I hear you, but Morales did have a point about Marquez living in the past somewhat. I mean Erik's claim that he deserves a rematch with Pac more than Marquez is ridiculous. I think Marquez wants the fight more with Morales for unfinished business and the fact that it would rake in some decent cash with the Mexican fans buying up ppv's. Marquez has way more to lose in that fight than Erik. If Marquez utterly destroys and embarrasses a Mexican legend like Morales, who though younger than Juan is CLEARLY past his prime, the shit could backfire and they(Mexican fans) might turn on him. Almost like they did with Oscar when he destroyed Chavez twice. It's a losing situation for Juan more than anything, and I think somebody might have gotten in his ear about that. Which is probably why he wants a lot of money to even consider the fight.

The best thing Marquez can do is move up, keep winning and keep looking great, that shit will speak for him more than anything. The downside is that he can get old overnight since he is already 37. And although he's one of the best technicians of his generation, he's not a defensive specialist like a Hopkins or Mayweather Jr, he's an offensive master. His fights tend to be battles and at 37, how many more battles does he have left in him?

I've been saying the same shit for years, but I'm curious if Marquez gets beat by a Khan or someone... would that spark Manny's interest or would he just fell like he dodge a bullet and keep it moving.

I think they'd just keep it moving. People are already starting to get wise to their games, look at all the criticism from the media for this Mosley fight. If Marquez losses badly to Khan and all of a sudden Pac wanted to fight him, the media people would turn on that dude and so would a lot of the fans. Not just that, styles make fights and Marquez style will still give that dude problems. And personally I don't think Khan is ready for a Marquez yet. I mean shit replace Maidana with Marquez in those late rounds and the fight ends around the 10th or 11th with a stoppage.

:lol::lol: at the idea of Golden Boy putting one of their prizes against JMM. He's going to have to beat someone else before he even sniffs Ortiz or Khan.
I agree, he's obviously still pissed that Morales wouldn't fight him before (reminds me of Mayweather-Mosley) and he should let it go and not even entertain the fight. Not much to win either way.

Idk man. After that Peterson fight, they gotta know they have another Francisco "Panchito" Bojado on their hands here. Another fight like that and you better believe they'll throw that kid to the wolves.:lol::lol:
