Plenty of time remains in this season to settle such a discussion, but Smart's impact on the Cowboys is undeniable. A much-needed glue guy for a talented team previously lacking on-floor direction, Smart has elevated OSU's play and its profile, with the team currently 7-1 and ranked No. 24.
Smart has delivered talent and production, yes, but also grit and toughness and leadership that is transforming the face of the Cowboys.
“For me as a coach, what I’ve loved about him is every single day of practice he comes ready to play, to make everybody else better,” Ford said. “He never takes a day off. Every day—not just when he feels like that. There’s not many guys out there like that anymore, at all.”
Talk to Florida’s Billy Donovan, who coached Smart with the USA Basketball U-18 national team last summer. Talk to Gonzaga’s Mark Few, who was an assistant on that staff. It is hard to find anyone who is not overwhelmed by Smart’s capacity to lead his teammates, to galvanize them into a successful unit.
You know what Smart really is? He’s a tale of inspiration. He’s a kid who grew up dirt poor in Dallas and could have turned into an actual, real-life thug. He’s a kid who watched his older brother die of cancer and another brother overdose on cocaine and nearly die. He’s a kid who used his incredible athletic talents and his otherworldly work ethic in the sport of basketball to lift himself out of a hopeless situation and toward a lucrative career as a professional athlete.
I’ve interviewed him a handful of times, and he’s one of the most intelligent, self-aware college athletes I’ve ever spoken with, gracious for his opportunities yet confident in his greatness. When I asked him why he’d risk returning to college hoops when the upcoming draft class is so stacked, he said, “What, you think I’m going to get worse?”
He’s hands-down the most competitive player in college hoops. And even with the mistakes of the past month, I still think he’s the best leader in college hoops, too, which is something plenty of college coaches have echoed to me.
Having played his way onto the 12-man roster of the United States Under-18 national team, he was singled out for praise by head coach Billy Donovan of Florida and power forward Jarnell Stokes of Tennessee.
Both cited Smart’s leadership and commitment to winning, qualities that have Ford excited about the future at Oklahoma State.

The fan called him "a piece of crap". ESPN showed phone footage this morning. This Jeff Orr guy has serious problems. Why are you calling kids that? Marcus Smart is 19. Dude should have his tickets taken away from him for at least a year. This isn't the first time he did some dumb shit. They showed him gesturing "Fuck you" to another kid at a different game. Marcus shouldn't have gone into the stands, so I understand the suspension. But his tickets should have been taken away. How nice of him to volunteer to not come to games again for the rest of the year.....*sarcasm*
Marcus Smart needs to send a thank you letter to the Missouri guy cause he took all the headlines for the sports talking heads tomorrow.
"Congo", why do you associate the worst black American tendencies with Africa...If this is true, expect of congo line of uncle tom media personalities asking why smart got mad if black people use the word too.

Same exact thing I thought as I turned on ESPN
According to Stephen A,there is no justification for hitting a white middle-aged man, even if he said the n-word...![]()

He didn't say that.
I'm sure of it.
He couldn't have.
What exactly did he say?
According to Stephen A,there is no justification for hitting a white middle-aged man, even if he said the n-word...![]()
He said, there is no justification for Marcus Smart for hitting him, even if the guy said the n-word towards him....
Skip was trying to tell Stephen A was there a slight justification for him hitting the guy, even if the CAC said the n-word and Stephen A said no...right after that,Stephen A went on a rant how black people shouldn't be putting their hands on a middle-aged white man, even if he said the n-word toward them...
Stephen A didn't like how the guy was insulting the kid and said Texas Tech should punish the guy,but most of his rant was towards Smart..
Hell,Skip said,Smart should of been suspended for the rest of the regular season....![]()
Didn't know it was more than one article because I only read one and as far as spelling goes; this is bgol who sitting up here making sure Swype spells every word correctly. Lol Y'all old asses have too much time on y'all handsI think the word you wanted to use was stay instead of say. Of course I won't be defending your lack of spelling simply because you're black.
And there was an article about him being immature. A single article. Oh my God!!!

But he put his hands on a fan and showed some restraint in doing so and should be considered the ultimate bad guy. He's a good kid who showed some emotion at being disrespected which for some reason is always wrong when it's a white person is doing the disrespecting or when a black guy is the one being disrespected.
It shows he didn't say n@gger but if he did all professional athletes go thru that shit Foh He's a hard headed mfer bottom line fuckin up his status. And as far as us being felt I'm sure he changed alot with pushing a fan who actually didn't even say the word oppose to showing white ppl; see these nikkaz r very violentYou're entitled to your opinion.
Personally, I think he should've gave it to him worse.
This isn't big enough of a story for me.
The headline should've read:
Marcus Smart viciously attacked fan over racial slur
Black people need to be felt. We haven't been FELT in a long time. They're gettin' bolder and bolder, and it appears too many of us want to be liked by them, so we temper our reactions and stay in line. Well, they STILL don't like us, and the don't respect us.
See, someone can hate the ground you walk on, but respect you. When they know you won't tolerate their bs, they're very careful about what they say and do.
But, maybe we should go with your plan of turning the other cheek. It has worked marvelously for us. George Zimmerman has shown deep respect to us over the tremendous restraint we've shown post-verdict.
He didn't say that.
I'm sure of it.
He couldn't have.
