Probably one of the most-celebrated black icons of all time, Marcus Garvey will be returning to us again – cinematically, at least. The former Jamaican political leader, publisher, journalist, entrepreneur, orator, staunch proponent of Black Nationalism and Pan Africanism movements, is to have his life depicted on the big screen in 2016.
Chosen to play arguably the most courageous and honourable heroes in black history is Delroy Lindo. With Jamaican parents, 63-year-old Lindo was born and raised in Lewisham, England, United Kingdom, until his teens when he and his mother, a nurse, moved to Toronto in Canada.
A little later, they moved to the United States, where Lindo would graduate from the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco. After graduation, Lindo landed his first film role, that of an Army sergeant in ‘More American Graffiti’ in 1979.
His portrayal of the bipolar numbers boss West Indian Archie in Spike Lee’s Malcolm X (1992) is what first attracted attention to Lindo’s considerable talents. Since then, he has appeared in various Hollywood films like Gone in 60 Seconds, Romeo Must Die and Get Shorty – just to mention a few.
Marcus Mosiah Garvey, who was born August 17, 1887 and died in 1940, is numbered among the greatest Africans of the 19th and 20th Centuries. The reasons are numerous. Some include his daring, visionary character, organizational ability, charismatic personality and outspokenness.
What many find astonishing beyond measure is his forward thinking as well as mobilization abilities that have shown the way to so many engaged in struggle to uplift African people worldwide.
Other cast members announced include Kevin Navayne and Loretta Davis, whilst the producer Peter Petrich has teamed up with director Steven Anderson and writer Jodi Sallinder for this eagerly-awaited biopic.
