Probably one of the most-celebrated black icons of all time, Marcus Garvey will be returning to us again – cinematically, at least. The former Jamaican political leader, publisher, journalist, entrepreneur, orator, staunch proponent of Black Nationalism and Pan Africanism movements, is to have his life depicted on the big screen in 2016.

Chosen to play arguably the most courageous and honourable heroes in black history is Delroy Lindo. With Jamaican parents, 63-year-old Lindo was born and raised in Lewisham, England, United Kingdom, until his teens when he and his mother, a nurse, moved to Toronto in Canada.

A little later, they moved to the United States, where Lindo would graduate from the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco. After graduation, Lindo landed his first film role, that of an Army sergeant in ‘More American Graffiti’ in 1979.

His portrayal of the bipolar numbers boss West Indian Archie in Spike Lee’s Malcolm X (1992) is what first attracted attention to Lindo’s considerable talents. Since then, he has appeared in various Hollywood films like Gone in 60 Seconds, Romeo Must Die and Get Shorty – just to mention a few.

Marcus Mosiah Garvey, who was born August 17, 1887 and died in 1940, is numbered among the greatest Africans of the 19th and 20th Centuries. The reasons are numerous. Some include his daring, visionary character, organizational ability, charismatic personality and outspokenness.

What many find astonishing beyond measure is his forward thinking as well as mobilization abilities that have shown the way to so many engaged in struggle to uplift African people worldwide.

Other cast members announced include Kevin Navayne and Loretta Davis, whilst the producer Peter Petrich has teamed up with director Steven Anderson and writer Jodi Sallinder for this eagerly-awaited biopic.

This came out of nowhere. Don't know if they got the right players for it but I'm game just cause it's Garvey and it's nice to finally see Delroy get the starring role.

Sometime I still feel a back to Africa movement needs to happen in one way or another.

white people?
What movie doesn't have some white folks behind it? We can only hope they don't fuck it up too much

They better not fuck it up or dilute it. It has to be a many series. Whose funding it ? Definitely white folks.
It's well over due I just hate cacs being associated with it. We should be able to fund this. White people telling our story it will always be whitewashed. Makes us look as though we lack the power to do it ourselves when in truth we lack the organization.

I enjoy Delroy Lindo but come the fuck on! He is completely wrong for this role! Delroy is 63 years old and looks it. Marcus Garvey was born in 1887 and founded the UNIA in 1914 when he was 27 years old. By 1922 the Black Star Line had already opened and closed. Garvey was convicted in 1923, spent years in jail then deported in 1927 and never set foot back in the U.S. - all while in his 30s.

Besides being 30+ years too old for the role, Delroy is 6 foot 4 and Marcus might have been 5 foot 6 at best. Also, Garvey was such a polarizing character that his biopic has the potential to make him look really really good... or really really bad. Of the five other names attached to the film, only one has ANY other credits besides this project on their IMDB pages. In other words... don't break out the champagne just yet. o_O
