I think that was the hunter's son and he just stumbled on the scene like an idiot. The bear probably went into the tree because the dogs were tracking it.

A brown bear won't climb but he'll do everything to uproot that tree to knock a person out of it.

I'm not a fan of hunting for bragging rights unless you're getting down and dirty with a knife and setting natural booby traps. That's real hunting.
