Police officers shot and killed an armed man in Brooklyn on Tuesday night during a narcotics investigation, the police said.

The shooting occurred about 9 p.m. outside of 970 Belmont Avenue in East New York.

The victim, whose name the police were withholding until his family could be notified, was taken to Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The police did not reveal whether the victim had fired at the officers. A gun was recovered at the scene, the police said.

Hours later, detectives and other police officials milled about at the scene, examining marked-off evidence.

Witnesses said they heard gunshots, then screams, then more gunshots.

“I heard the shots,” said Moises DeJesus, 14, who was with friends at his house nearby when the shooting occurred. “They were screaming, ‘Get down! Get down!’ ”

“We didn’t want to go outside,” said Delmas Ortiz, 14, who was with Moises. “We were worried we were going to get shot.”
