Mac OS X Lion[1] (version 10.7) is set to be the eighth major release of Mac OS X, Apple's desktop and server operating system for Macintosh computers. Lion is set to be released in July 2011.[2] The Apple site homepage and Mac OS X webpages refer to it as OS X Lion, without the "Mac",[3] although Apple's press release for Lion's July release uses both "Mac OS X Lion" and "OS X Lion".[2]

A preview of Lion was publicly unveiled at Apple's "Back to the Mac" event on October 20, 2010. It will bring many developments made in Apple's iOS, such as an easily-navigable display of installed applications, to the Mac, and will include support for the Mac App Store, as introduced in Mac OS X Snow Leopard version 10.6.6.[4][5] On February 24, 2011, the first developer's preview of Lion (11A390) was released to subscribers of Apple's developers program.[6] Other developer previews were subsequently released, with Lion Preview 4 (11A480b) being released at WWDC 2011.[7]. Lion achieved Golden Master status on July 1, 2011

i need to know will all of my previously installed programs still be good, or will some of them need to be reinstalled

Cool. You don't need to install from USB. Once the files are downloaded, unrar them and unzip the zip file and it creates an installable .dmg file. It installs just like any Mac app.. then reboots into an install wizard.

So far looks good. I haven;t had time to really dig in to all the new features. But on the surface.. looks the same, with a couple of new items on the dock (Mission Control and Launch Pad). The top status bar as a couple of new items (i.e. You can switch logins easier). I played with a few gestures and that's about it.

I installed it on my Mac Book Pro (13inch). I had photoshop CS4 suite, Aperture, Chrome some app store apps and they all work just fine after the install.
