I'm looking to start my own gym and wanted to know what you all like & dislike about the gym you currently attend or work for. Also, what do you look for when searching for a new gym (besides how bad the bitches are lol).

Also, before I break down & pay, if anyone has a download to one of these books I'd appreciate it:

The flexibility of your space will be important. Workout trends change over time, so you will need to be able to change with it.

Really think about what type of atmosphere you want to surround your guests in. Its not about weights anymore, sure theirs a few meat heads left in the world, but theres also a bunch of 24/7 spots with low monthly fees and plenty of iron for your average meat head to use. So do you really want to spend money and floor space on tons of hardware?

America is trying to get healthy, you want a space where a fat slob (male or female) can come in, feel comfortable and want to keep coming back. To me that means classes..and lots of them.

Zumba, Aerobics, Tai Bo, spin, dance classes, their all huge in now. And their the type of thing that someone who knows nothing about "working out" can attend, break a sweat and feel like their doing something. You want to capture late starters to working out, as well as the lifers..

As mentioned above, offer a niche, may I suggest diet or nutrition counseling. Most gyms have trainers and equipment, but they all leave out counseling guests on changes they need to make to their diet to make their workouts successful.

Lastly, MMA is huge right now. Sticking with the theme of classes, consider kickboxing, boxing and children's Brazilian jiujitsu classes. Right now I can choose between an LA Fitness, with all its weights and workout machines, or a local combat sports gym, that has heavy bags hanging and a real low budget weight room - I choose the MMA spot. I get to keep the hands skills up, while burning 800 calories in a 50 minute kickboxing, boxing or Muy Tai class and I can spare in any discipline anytime I want. Fuck LA fitness..
