Sydenham shooting: Gunman dies after ‘being hit by own bullet bouncing off car’ in south-east London
A gunman in his twenties is believed to have accidently shot himself dead when a bullet ricocheted off the windscreen of a parked car.
The man died at the scene after gunshots were heard outside a Lloyds Bank inSydenhamshortly before 4pm yesterday.
Scotland Yardsaid enquiries in to the circumstances continue but an accident is one line of inquiry.
A 56-year-old woman living on Venner Road said: “He came to shoot someone else, but he ended up shooting himself.
“You can see on the car window where the bullet bounced off it. After it happened, the boy he came to shoot stood there filming him.”
A shopkeeper on the high street said: “A group of guys were sitting in a car by the bank and a big guy came up to them with a shotgun. They all got out of the car and ran so the guy decided to damage the car with the back of the gun.
“As he was hitting the windows the gun went off and he shot himself — that’s what we’ve been told.” Witnesses claim a man dressed in black and wearing a balaclava leaned over the body and yelled: “He’s shot himself — he’s f***ing shot himself”.
Two men dressed in similar outfits appeared and the group ran off. One man has been arrested in connection with the investigation and remains in custody today.
Ellie Reeves, Labour MP for Lewisham West andPenge, tweeted: “Shocked and saddened to learn of the fatal shooting in Sydenham. My thoughts are with the victim and their family. This violence has no place in our community.”
Scotland Yard said officers were called to reports of “suspicious activity” at 3.45pm and the man was pronounced dead five minutes later.
A spokesman added: “One man has been arrested in connection with the investigation and remains in custody at a south London police station.”
In a separate incident, a 16-year-old boy was taken to hospital after being stabbed near Canons Park Tube station in north-west London.
Police said the victim is not believed to have suffered life-changing injuries.
