LONDON (AP) — Lewis Hamilton is now a “Sir” as well as a seven-time Formula One champion.
Hamilton received a knighthood Wednesday as part of Queen Elizabeth II’s New Year’s honors list, which also recognized British performers, politicians, public servants and people outside the limelight who worked to defeat the coronavirus and its devastating impacts.

Hamilton, who secured his seventh F1 title last month to equal Michael Schumacher’s record, has said his recent success was partly inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement. The 35-year-old race car driver took the knee on the grid and wore anti-racism slogans during the season.

Hamilton told the BBC last week that “it was a different drive than what I’ve had in me in the past, to get to the end of those races first so that I could utilize that platform” against racism.

Sir Lewis has a ring to it.

You are also celebrating because a white queen has validated
a black man?
No, we are celebrating because the British people have honoured a black man who is at the absolute top of The Game. Knighthoods are not the monarch saying "I think so and so should get one" - they are the people, through the elected ruling party who make the recommendation, which is almost always approved.

Lewis Hamilton says Black Lives Matter gave him 'extra drive' in 2020
Lewis Hamilton says the Black Lives Matter movement helped drive him on to his seventh Formula 1 world title.

Hamilton, 35, took a knee on the grid and wore anti-racism slogans in support of the cause during the season.

The Briton's Mercedes team also adopted a black livery for the 2020 campaign in a stand against discrimination.

Hamilton, who guest edited BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Saturday, said: "I had this extra drive in me to get to the end of those races."

He was voted as the 2020 BBC Sports Personality of the Year earlier this month after equalling Michael Schumacher's record of winning seven World Championships and passing the German's total of 91 grands prix victories.

On Saturday, Hamilton told historian and presenter Professor David Olusoga: "It was a different drive than what I've had in me in the past - to get to the end of those races first so that I could utilise that platform [for Black Lives Matter] and shine the light as bright as possible."

Asked by Olusoga if he had been concerned about the response to his stance, Hamilton replied: "There is no way that I could stay silent. And once I said that to myself, I didn't hold any fear."

Hamilton was also asked by presenter Nick Robinson about racism in his sport and the fact that he is the only black F1 driver.

"There are many other young kids of colour that deserve the opportunity to progress, have a great education, [who could] be an engineer or whatever it is they want. But the fact is, the opportunity is not the same for them," said Hamilton.

The Mercedes driver also hinted that activism might represent a new avenue for him when he retires from racing.

"The happiness and success of winning these championships is a wonderful thing, but it's short lived," Hamilton added.

Last year, Hamilton launched his own commission to improve diversity in motorsport – The Hamilton Commission – and also launched the Mulberry STEM Academy with Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff, to encourage students from ethnic minority groups to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The Mulberry STEM Academy recently hosted their first session, with Mercedes technical director James Allison taking part in the virtual lesson to 40 students.
